Imperial Style Scenery

By Kojib, in Star Wars: Legion

Oh wow. I spent my evenings making terrain for a game that isn't released for 8 months... This is my first attempt at making terrain so its shoddy but I'll share! Hoping things become better over the next few months aha

I wanna create an imperial style set of terrain. I'm taking a lot of inspiration from the Jedi Outcast games. I know its probably more to do with the old game engine, but they show imperial outposts to very block like and angular, as opposed to the more curvaceous 'sci-fi' style building you sometimes see. I loved those games as a kid and when I think 'Imperials' that's the kinda aesthetic that comes to mind, and I would love to create a map where the forces are clashing in a place that isn't Endor, Hoth or Tatooine. I love them, but I think the star wars universe has so many other amazing planets that have map potential. I'm considering looking back through the KOTOR games to find building inspiration there as well.

Anyway. I started simple and made some ginormous cargo blocks. Did them 8cmx8cm, so tallish, but I recall a mention of the jump mechanic meaning Luke can cross terrain that is 1 movement high? (That's a vague guess), but I don't know the movement 1 measurement, so they'll either help or hinder him when we eventually find out. They're just a thick cardboard, cut into a cube and glued, with a thinner cardboard glued on top. Sadly they're very rough and ready, even though I used the same template pieces for the design they all came out different sizes (can we get some appreciation for how hard it is to cut a perfect circle with a craft knife). So the sides don't match up perfectly, but I'm hoping I can correct/cover that up with a dank *** paint job. Not entirely sure what to go with colour wise yet though.

Probably grey.

Imperials like grey.

Gonna try my hand at an ion cannon by the end of the year! Any ideas or pictures of imperial stuff that would look great please post. The more source material to draw ideas from the better!

Whilst technically it's Sith architecture, not Imperial....Dromund Kaas might help give you ideas for is style of angular design. Examples:

I'm planning some modular terrain pieces based on Tarkintown from Rebels. Simple, yet fluffy.

Jedi Outcast had a lot of verticality in its levels if I'm remembering correctly, which could make an interesting map for armies with lots of ability to traverse terrain (Luke, AT-RT, Speeders).

The height 1 (== range 1) of Luke's jump is six inches, which corresponds to somewhere around 25 feet, at scale.

It did! Lots of platforms and walkways from building to building above endless falls into the the depths below ahah. I'm not sure how much scope there will be in the rules for maps like that with soldiers on 3/4 different levels, but who knows at this point! I'm just thinking of the range ruler working horizontally, not laterally? I'll draw up some designs for buildnigs and maps with them though, I'd love to create a three dimensional map like that.

Well that makes my boxes a breeze for Luke then ahah, but at least they'll offer some cover and obstacles for everyone else to maneuver around.

I certainly can't fault your source material.

Top of my list for "Greatest SW Games of all time".

...in fact it's still perched in my Favorites on Steam, played it through with my son last year.

I'm sure it says on a thread here somewhere, but do we know:

average unit heights

atrt unit height

from that any way of working out how tall the atst will be?

Made some cargo tubes, based on the designs you find in the Battlefront game, they're in the hangers and around the map on Sullust as well as other maps.

Ive only just found the wonder that is plasticard, which I've ordered, and I'll cut into strips to cover the gaps above the side areas that stick out. I'll be aiming for plasticard for most metal based terrain from now on, as I'm finding cardboard to be a nightmare in terms of cutting to a more intricate level of detail. Still, these didn't cost me a thing to make, and fingers crossed with a good paint job they won't look out of place on the gaming table.

i don't suppose anyone knows of a vinyl/plastic spray which I may apply to layer them in a smooth, gloss like substance, to make them all seem slightly smoother/less like paper when it comes to painting - also to try and fill some smaller gaps between the cardboard where I have pitifully failed at cutting straight lines.

These are lookign really great so far. (also I thought that pencil was a miniature toy lightsaber for a minute)

These make me want to run to my computer and see if I can figure out how to model them for 3D printing. Awesome work and thanks for the inspiration!

My prototype didn't turn out as well as the work you did, but I should be able to get it closer. Would you be willing to share the dimensions for yours so that I can get a little closer?

Don't forget the essential feature of Imperial architecture: no safety standards.

Walkways should not have railings; ramps should lead to nigh-infinite pits; explosive barrels should be placed near heavily trafficked areas, and so on.

I disagree I think that looks fantastic! The lines and angles are far more angular than mine, the the insets on the side panels look fantastic. Mine were very minimal, and I was relying on a paint job to add an element of depth that you've managed to do wonderfully there.

what material did you make that out of?

The final mode stood at 7.5cm in height and around 18cm in length. However to be truer to the game, I would make it longer in order to achieve the wider trapezium shapes in all 8 the side panels. That may be too restricting for the game board though.

The trapezium in the middle had 3 levels.

base 6.5cm X 13.5cm

Central 8cm X 16cm

top 6.5cm X 13.5cm

I used PLA for this print. Unless I need something more durable it's what I do almost all of my printing with as it's very easy to work with.

Thanks for the dimensions. It may take me a couple days due to my schedule, but I'll get the model updated and share it when I'm done.

Not quite the exact dimensions you gave me, but it's pretty close.

Any experience using a printrbot metal plus? My library uses those and they've been having issues with walls collapsing.

My advice would be to burnish the card board a bit and excentuate the coragations. Coragated metal is often used in making crates. It will look great when drybrushed, washed, or air brushed at an angle.

if you want sharper sides and edges cover them with a thinner board and score the folds so they come out nice and sharp.

Here are some containers I made with WotC minis for comparison.

Hmm... Good idea!

I'm a little rusty but....

I'll post the "consumer version" once I've got it all PDFed and nice.
