Suggested beer, wine & cocktail pairings for Armada!

By cynanbloodbane, in Star Wars: Armada

As one who enjoys an adult beverage or two during an Armada game, and inspired by @DiabloAzul, and I's conversation earlier.

I am prompting the community to suggest beer, wine & cocktail pairings for specific Armada commanders or fleet builds.

To remain all inclusive, feel free to let us know if you drink the same thing no matter what you play, or if you are one who prefers not to mix alcohol and games.

Also in the spirit of the conversation above, I ask that you be as specific as possible with an suggested beverages. If we are going to do this, it only makes sense to introduce the community to possible options they may not have encountered before.

Specific or especially local, for you, micro brews, vintages or cocktail concoctions are appreciated.

To begin I will repeat,

For Raddus, I'm thinking Midas Touch from Dogfish head. Light, refreshing, goes well with fish & packs a very surprising ABV punch of 10%.

For Thrawn, I am leaning towards a bit of an outlier small batch, a ginger IPA made by my local Thirsty Dog. Potent, complicated, & with very little in the way of bitterness.

I will add more later.

Garm Bel Iblis just screams single malt scotch to me. I'm thinking Highland Park.

Here are Madaghmire's Whiskey Pairings, Optimizing your Armada Experience Through the Magic of Inebriation;

Rebellions are Built on Liquid Courage

1. Dodonna- Tyrconnell Irish Whiskey- Both come in at a nice price point, and get the job done.

2. Garm Bel Iblis- Highland Park- I'll take the nod from Roc here, it works. Garm strikes me as a smoking lounge kinda guy, and Highland is a nice, smoky whiskey.

3. Cracken- I'm going to cheat, this isn't a whiskey, but I would pair him with Kracken Spiced Rum and Dr. Pepper. You'll be too hopped up on rum, caffeine and sugar to care anyway.

4. Rieekan- Ardbeg- Ardbeg is one of the smokiest Scotches you will find, perfect for keeping warm on those cold Hoth nights. It's like drinking the smoke off the wrecks of your ships that are still somehow alive.

5. Mon Mothma- The Macallan 12 Sherry Oak Whiskey- In my mind, the Macallan is the OG Scotch, because its what convinced me that Whiskey was my drink of choice.

6. Sato- Hibiki 12 Unlike many of the Whiskies you are going to see, the Hibiki is a blended whiskey, just like Sato blends gunships with squadron tactics.

7. Ackbar- Yamazaki 12 Full disclosure, I haven't had a chance to try this one yet. But I'm told it pairs extremely well with fish.

8. Leia- Dalwhinnie 16- This might be my favorite at the moment. Simple, crisp. Which is good because you'll have little time to think about the whiskey while you try to shoehorn her into a list.

9. Raddus-Johnny Walker (pick a label)- Churchill's whiskey of choice, according to that article Dras links a little bit down the page.

Imperial Stouts (would be a great header if this were about beer)

1. Ozzel- Glenfiddich- Nothing fancy, but can get you where you want to go pretty quickly, and is better then people realize.

2. Konstantine- Water. Clearly you are already drunk.

3. Motti- Cail Ila- Smokey and full bodied. Just like Motti's Star Destroyers, and his voice after Vader chokes him out.

4. Sloane- Glenmorangie 10- I just like Glenmorangie. Its very drinkable to me, and Sloane is very takeable.

5. Jerry- Bruchladdich- I can't believe I can get something this good for this price. Makes me want to dance.

6. Screed- Jameson- Never fails to leave me critical. Probably should stop drinking it "by the handle", but you know what, don't judge me.

7. Thrawn-Lagavulin 16- The number one drink of Ron Swanson, who built most of Thrawn's patio furniture, and also his patio. In turn it gave Thrawn the insight needed to destroy him, but the Grand Admiral could not bring himself to harm such an artisan.

8. Vader- Peat Monster- This is a blended whiskey that is just, as one might imply, super peaty. Its all smoke, my friends. Which is fitting for a man who is a blend of evil space wizard and machine, and is covered by burns.

9. Tarkin- Laphroig- Another smoky whiskey, it strikes me as exactly what a stark aristocrat such as Tarkin would drink if he deigned to drink at all. Except probably he'd drink Pappy Van Winkle Reserve but good luck finding that. Also good luck finding Tarkin in a list after Thrawn drops.

Mon Mothma: A bloody mary and a nice game of badminton on an early Sunday afternoon in the Hamptons, thank you very much, that would be lovely.

Leia: Gray Goose martini straight up.

Ackbar: I have a good imagination, but tough to imagine what fish people drink. Calamari is an italian word, so let's go with a nice Chianti.

Sato: Kamikaze mixed drink

Madine: Hendricks Gin &Tonic.

Rieekan: Wild Turkey

Cracken: Cracken does not drink, it dulls his wits!

Dodonna: Dewar's

Actually, it's a Greek word. Means squid. I always found it ironic that on the planet Mon Cal, with two native sentient species, one with and one without face tentacles, the one without was named after squid.

As for drinks, I seldom drink or eat whilst playing, and when I do, it isn't very specifically commander based or anything, just what I am drinking at the time. . .

Most commonly, Lipton Yellow Label tea with enough sugar to be sweet and enough concentrated milk to be caramel colored, and less commonly, Baileys (dunno if there are specific brands, I just call it Baileys). I have also been known to drink a nice combo of OJ and Orange soda, mixed in proportions such that you get predominantly the taste of fresh squeezed OJ, but also experience the sensation of the carbonated bubbles in your sip.

I once drank a berry-flavored tea, but I lost that game rather horribly whilst on the cusp of victory by flying my ISD off the edge of the board. . . I have yet to taste the flavor of that traitorous tea since.

Need to shift over @DiabloAzul's suggested pairing.

For one, I think Vader's "subtle" approach is best represented by Sink The Bismarck.

It seems incredibly appropriate!

I will also add:

Motti, Edmond Fitzgerald Porter from Great Lakes brewing company. A true working man's beer, that is hardy enough to live on.

Meh. Whatever. It sounds Italian. And according to MY deep, extensive research, it means "ink pot" or "pen case". Maybe mon cal are nerds with pocket protectors?

Dodonna - Highland Park: an elegant scotch for a more civilised age.

Garm - 99 Bananas: it was great when I first started... then I learned better.

Mon Mothma - Virgin Margarita: lol, you thought you had a shot.

Ackbar - Bud Light: the Armada bro's choice that everyone else knows is just water with food coloring.

Rieekan - Jose Cuervo: hangs around way longer than he should.

Cracken - orange juice: good for you in the long term but not much fun right now.

Madine - Jello shot: slippery and usually fairly impotent.

Leia - Rogue Dead Guy Ale: overpriced crap.

Sato - Vodka Cranberry with gin instead of vodka and lemonade instead of cranberry: it's a Tom Collins, only you're paying more to replace the ingredients instead of just getting what you wanted in the first place.

Raddus, in thinkin guiness

Ozzel, Seagram's 7&7, not much to it, but they will sneak up on you if you let them.

Konstantin, Taquila shots after anything else. Sounds like fun at the time, but it almost never works out well for you.

Tarkin, Whiskey Sour. Sour, prissy, but can still get the job done, even if there is a better way.

Sloane, Zombie Killer. Because that's what she was made to do.

For Tarkin I was going to suggest Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial: it's good for beginners and works reasonably well with anything, but it's simply overpriced.

Motti: Arrogant B***tard IPA. Bitter, uncompromising, and eventually you'll wish you could branch out to other options easier, but very good for the price. Dropping the name is half the fun.

Jerjerrod: Straight gin. Traditionally used to imbibe a bitter medicine, but if you can put up with the taste you can have lots of fun with it and mix in more than you thought.

Tagge: Well tequila. This is a bad choice in most cases.

Thrawn: Smirnoff flavored vodkas. You don't know if it's actually as good as it sounds, but darn if you don't want to try it anyway.

I will let the picture speak for the Rebel Fleet!

Rebel Yell

Rebel Player only

Makes you think your Invincible!

As this is a topic I have been asking for for months, I feel I should chime in. Unfortunately, I have been caught both unprepared and with out time. I am doing some, research, I will call it research, and will contribute productively to the discussion. Eventually.

Love all the suggestions so far, I hope I can do as well.

I swear the best pairing for Rieekan has to be absinth. That will at least explain why his ships won't die right away.

I could see Thrawn being more of a wine guy. Of good Vintage and rarity. He does love art and the Classier things in life.

I don't think I could take any Raddus drink seriously without paying roots to the core concept of the character, through Winston Churchill.

And for those who want to try and match Churchill on an average day

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/food-and-drink/drinks/the-day-i-tried-to-match-churchill-drink-for-drink/

(That explains why Raddus disregarded orders and flew off anyway he was really really drunk)

Ackbar: Mon Campari....

Chewie get us out of here!

Oh man I thought I had some good pairings, but you guys took it to whole new level!

I love the Absinth=Rieekan and Sloane=Zombie Killer stuff. Very clever!

Funny, Ard, Dodonna struck me in a very different way.

This one HAS to be the best though:

"Mon Mothma - Virgin Margarita: lol, you thought you had a shot." If that doesn't scream Mon Mothma-we-dated-for-6-months-and-i-only-got-to-2nd-base then I don't know what does.

Now you know why Garm left the fledgeling Rebellion.

Guinness, the best beer made from for fishes.

I drink always the same, and that's Diet Coke. I'm not about to endanger my ability to think clearly while in battle.
