Nightmares Made Real (Wraiths announced)

By werdnaegni, in Runewars Miniatures Game

I'm digging that there doesn't seem to be power creep here, just another really cool unit that changes the meta for Waiqar significantly.

Ok this is comical....
They come with Equipments even though they cant take one. We can assume they get access to it through another card otherwise why would they come with equipment at all.

Wind runes. They have a white Skill mod. If you get atleast a 2 speed out of that you can actually bolt across the terrain pretty fast, and if done right you can dive right into the face of the Cavalry (not touching them) and then Wind Rune right over them. Their ability makes no mention where the March or Shift comes from so it works there too.

Whats even more funny, is their ability to Reform after moving right into your face enables them to do it even easier. Say they approach you at a wonky angle, the 2fwd shift wouldnt clear you because of it. Reform for free to line up, now it does clear. Cya cavalry!

Mind blown.

So, Metered March + Wind Rune? Seems really legit. You get a second reform after the Wind Rune shift, I suppose? That's amaaaazing!

EDIT: Oh, right. Free Wind Rune reform :P
I think Maxam is right that one of the Unique's give them access to equipment. Can't wait!

Well wind rune gives you a reform anyway but yes you do
I actually didnt think of metered march. Which is funny since i usually glue that to most of my units lol

Haha, ok: Ironbounds for Daqan: very strong elite melee units, but can get out of control (compulsory move, or choice of dial action modified by opponent, something like that), to reflect the unpredictable nature of their "magically possessed" status (hinted at in the Lore Guide). :)

I'm with you! Ironbound! I really liked them in Battlelore!

Corruption rune: Choose an infantry at range 1- [unstable] ~~~~~ card of your ~ deck. That infantry[unsure] suffers ~ equal to the... I can't make out much more till the bottom... that card's type: Confusion: ~ Doubt: ~ Fear: ~

Each ~ is a word I can't quite make out.

its hard to read but it looks like it might be damaged based on the Morale card you just drew.

That's my guess each type has a word behind it so I think depending on the type you pull it has different effects.

Got it!!! I got it from the context and not because I can magically see blurred lines. Thanks @Curlycross

it says

Corruption Rune

Choose an enemy at range 1-unstable and draw a card from the morale deck. That enemy suffers damage equal to the number of panic tokens on that card, then suffers 1 bane based on the card's type:

Confusion - Blight

Doubt - Panic

Fear - Immobilization

Makes sense to me.

Thats actually pretty powerful. The variable range makes it be toned down a bit.

Choose an enemy at range 1-[unstable] and discard the top card of your morale deck. That enemy suffers damage equal to the number of morale icons on that card, then receives 1 bane based on that cards type. Confusion: Stun. Doubt: Panic. Fear: Immobilize.

I feel like we've had this discussion before, but I'm not sure. Anyway, here's my take on it:

"Choose one enemy at range 1- [unstable rune] and draw the top card of the (your?) morale deck. That enemy suffers damage equal to the number of morale icons on that card, then receives 1 bane of that car's type:

  • Confusion: Blight Stun (thanks, TallGiraffe)
  • Doubt: Panic
  • Fear: Immobilize"

...aaand totally ninja'd. Nice work @Wraithist and @Curlycross ...and rowdyoctopus

yeah im curious about the "Your" in there about the deck.

i thought the morale deck was shared?

Per the tournament rules morale decks are not shared. In fact, I would argue the only time you should share a morale deck is when you are doing the core set skirmish set up.

Thats actually annoying since theres a TON of repeats in the deck.
Seems like no matter how much we shuffle it we get like 5 of the same card in a row, then 4-5 of a different card lol.

I think confusion is stun but what ever.

You shouldn't ever technically be able to 2 shift through a unit, as you'd have to be in b2b contact to clear a tray. Any time you use the wraiths to move through a unit it's going to be a clip at a wonky angle. That's why I don't think running 4 trays is bad at all.

This is the type of unit you run wide of everything anyway. Having a free reform is stupid good for mobility. A unit with a 4-march, trumpets and a free reform that moves through terrain shouldn't be engaged by anything that it doesn't want to

I wonder if the decision to make every neutral upgrade available within each faction's expansions means they will end up throwing neutral upgrades in with units that cannot utilize them. It just seems like a weird design choice to me to give them another upgrade to just grant them a different slot. We have precedent with the Deepwood Archers of having two identical formations with different upgrade slots.

They have a speed-2 shift, so they can shift through heroes and 1-rank units.

That's probably why Kari's unique upgrade is called Wraith Step.

I thought so too at first! Then I saw that lil dangly "g" tail from "Blight" and could not unsee.

Plus it's a corruption rune so not having a blight bane would seem off to me.

Nah, the pegs get in the way. Since you only ever contact an enemy and never interlock with them, you'll always need slightly more than n+1 movement to clear them, where n is the number of ranks in the enemy unit. You could use Metered March to end just in front of them and then advance 3 to the other side, but I think chances are you'd be charged before you got a chance.

I'm pretty sure speed 2 is exactly the length of 2 trays. You cannot move speed 2 and clear a single tray.

 Oh, I'm still in X-wing mode. Do forgive me, kind residents of Terrinoth.

These look completely awesome, love the mechanic.

Gonna need death knights and wraiths for sure.

Well played, FFG, well played.

I especially like the flavor and design behind Kari's renown as a wraith stalker now. Her surge ability is not affected by the wraith's reroll ability and every surge she rolls equals a dead wraith.

If I could double - like this I would!
