X-Wing fix idea #837 (Casual games only)

By No Pickles, in X-Wing

In books and video games I always loved the unique ability of the X-wing to manage power to its shields or guns. What do you all think about this:

Modification: Divert Power (0 points)

  • T-65 X-Wing only
  • Clean shaven pilots only
  • You may equip an additional modification
  • After executing a green maneuver & performing an action, you may either assign yourself an evade token or roll one additional attack die during the combat phase

This is not intended as a tournament level fix. It's intended to make a squad of 3-4 thematic X-wings competitive in a casual game against "meta" / combo wing lists.

Thematically, having to fly a green move on such a limited dial represents diverting excess power from the engines towards the shields or lasers.

The performing an action requirement is to ensure it only triggers if you don't bump or fly on an obstacle.

If your T-65 X-wing pilot has a mustache, he doesn't need any help.

Ok, questions:

  1. If it's a casual game, are the power ships really causing that much havoc in your basement that the X-Wing requires more of a fix?
  2. If you upgrade the X-Wing so much... what are you doing for TIE Fighters, B-Wings, A-Wings... etc...? Aren't you just edging them out further?
  3. How much have you playtested your idea?

Ultimately, it's your basement, but I wouldn't play against this on a casual store night. I'm already required to track enough official card interactions that I don't want to play with custom modifications and titles. Custom pilots is one thing... custom upgrades... meh. Don't take this wrong way, no ill will. I just see additional balance issues being introduced.

I regret posting already... these threads always pick up a life of their own...

What body parts have to be clean shaven, exactly?

Biggs is just going to get a razor.

On topic, the fix could work.

Poor Porkins :(

Oh man. I can't believe I forgot about Porkins.

I'll have to change it to:

No mustachioed pilots

Strolling over from Legion after a looong time and what do I find? A fix-the-X-Wing-thread. So X-Wing is still called X-Wing because that's the craft you better avoid? Any lists out there a Star Wars fan might recognize from the movies? Makes me wonder how many waves it will take for Legion to reach that sorry state.

If you search odanans(?)custom cards, I think you will find the 'divert'cards already made.

Well, since Vader and Luke are in the starter set, it won't be long until all the really 'good' characters are odd fringe characters no one knows save a tiny minority, it will devolve like this game currently has ☹️

Porkins still has a moustache. He just has a beard as well.

Not to get all "rules lawyery" but technically Porkins has a goatee.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that in the soon to be released FAQ, FFG confirms that the modification only applies to lone mustaches.

Why does no one like Tarn?

Now after Yavin, the t-65 was modified to shoot with the S-foils closed. So the Dual card every one keeps posting doesn't fit the fluff.

This does IMO.

The X-wing's laser cannons had various settings:

Single fire, where each cannon fired individually (Normal Usage good at all ranges, most accurate);
Dual fire, where two cannons in opposite positions paired up and the pairs fired alternately (Middle ground for attacking, not as accurate as single fire, but more accurate than quad fire);
Quad fire, where all four cannons (one at each foil-tip) fired together, converging on the target; (Used for Close Range since not very accurate)
Stutter fire, where many underpowered beams were fired in rapid succession (added during Yuuzhan Vong War).

You could simulate this with a dual card title:

Dual card title: Variable Laser Settings 0 pts

T-65 X-wing Only:

Primary Weapon Only:

Side 1:

Quad Fire:

Range 1 Only. If target outside of range one use primary attack value instead of Quad Fire. (AKA. Dual Fire)

Add an Attack Die to your attack. You may change 1 blank to a focus

You may flip this card after you move as a free action.

Side 2:

Single Fire:

When attacking Change 1 focus to a hit result

you may flip this card after you move as a free action

That's how I would fix the X-wing.

Nah.

Quad laser cannons - linked

When attacking with your primary weapon, you may add one [crit] result. If you do, you must flip this card over.

Quad laser cannons - stutter

When attacking with your primary weapon, you may turn one blank result to a [eye] result.

When you hit with a primary weapon attack, the defender suffers one damage. Then cancel all dice.

During the end phase if you made no primary weapon attacks this round, you may flip this card over.

Reflecting how the weapons in the Rogue Squadron games worked.

]Why link it to manoeuvres? It's about how the guns work, not the engines. Link it to attacking.
