Help me make a Rogue One Vader squad

By PaulTiberius, in X-Wing Squad Lists

We are doing a little store tournament where you can only bring ships seen on screen in the OT and Rogue One.

I really want to fly a Lambda carrying Vader, flanked by two TIE Bombers to bring the thematic Rogue One goodness.

I was not in the game when Doom Shuttle was a thing, so I have no practice with it and don't plan on making something necessarily competitive--just thematic and fun.

So I want a Lambda (should I pick one of the named pilots?) with Vader, Gunner and FCS. Classic buzzsaw right?

I think I need the bombers to be good alpha strikers to make the most of Vader's force chokes before the Lambda goes boom. But I'm also debating devoting one bomber to AWACS capability (ops spec, systems officer). There's always the option of bringing Tomax (I prefer him skinny, as a shuttle rather than an ordnance carrier). Or unguided rockets on a couple generics, which might leave enough room for a cheap TIE.

Any ideas?

Keeping it "udderly" simple, rolling 4x3 dice against an agi -1 target (or... drop two scimitars, and add some tomax spices):

Lambda-Class Shuttle: Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Tractor Beam (1)
ยท Darth Vader (3)
Operations Specialist (3)
TIE Bomber: Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)
Unguided Rockets (2)
TIE Bomber: Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)
Unguided Rockets (2)
TIE Bomber: Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)
Unguided Rockets (2)
TIE Bomber: Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)
Unguided Rockets (2)
-- TOTAL ------- 100p. --

If I were in this tournament, I would run a Palp Shuttle w/ collision detector and the 3 named Tie Striker pilots w/ ailerons and LWF. This list is rather scary to face and can be really unpredictable with the strikers, especially when you start choosing to stress some of them to shut off ailerons. I took it against a crack swarm and timed everything perfectly to drop Howlrunner on the first round of fire while only taking damage on the shuttle. My strikers came in on a flank and crashed into the left rear tie setting up range 1 shots on Howlrunner. Duchess did a hard turn that flanked perfectly without slamming into the chaos and then barrelrolled out of arcs. Then came the K turns and sloops to start dropping more Ties while the shuttle kept taking shots. I only lost because the tournament rounds were 60 minutes. When the round ended, I had a full health Countdown versus 2 damaged black squadrons with crackshot spent, and I was working on hunting them down.

Vader had a lambda, 2 Bombers (which may well have been TIE shuttles), and 2 TIE fighters in the film.

In the film it's a Lambda, two TIE Boarding Shuttles (TIE/br) and two TIE Fighters. The closest in game to the Boarding Shuttle is the TIE Shuttle but I don't see how you'd have any fun running three shuttles! So we'll use traditional Bombers. As you only have two Bombers they should be devoted to the alpha strike you want. The Lambda "Doomshuttle" is usually run lightly as ultimately you want it to kill itself and hangs back. Remember it's attack doesn't have to hit to trigger Vader so Gunner isn't needed. For the TIE Fighters I'd try for Black Squadron which is Vader's squadron.

Perhaps use this 100 point list as a basis:

Omicron Group Pilot (24) - Lambda-Class Shuttle
Collision Detector (0), Darth Vader (3)

Gamma Squadron Veteran (26) - TIE Bomber
Veteran Instincts (1), Proton Torpedoes (4), Extra Munitions (2), Guidance Chips (0)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (23) - TIE Bomber
Homing Missiles (5), Extra Munitions (2), Long-Range Scanners (0)

Black Squadron Pilot (15) - TIE Fighter
Crack Shot (1)

Academy Pilot (12) - TIE Fighter

To make the list simpler you could swap the Academy for a second Black Squadron and the Gamma Vet for a second Scimitar or vice versa.

Have fun! :)

According to the scene, as mentioned before, there are 2 bombers and 2 tie fighters escorting the shuttle, perhaps something like this?:

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Fire-Control System (2)
Darth Vader (3)
Gunner (5)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)
Unguided Rockets (2)
Seismic Charges (2)
Lightweight Frame (2)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)
Unguided Rockets (2)
Seismic Charges (2)
Lightweight Frame (2)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Total: 99

Gunner, FCS and Seismic Charges could be dropped for another Academy.

If you like having them all the same PS.... here's a different, perhaps stupider one:

Captain Yorr (24)
Darth Vader (3)

Gamma Squadron Pilot (18)
Unguided Rockets (2)
Lightweight Frame (2)

Gamma Squadron Pilot (18)
Unguided Rockets (2)
Lightweight Frame (2)

Black Squadron Pilot (14)
Crack Shot (1)

"Wampa" (14)

Total: 100

Hope this helps, let us know what you choose to escort the mean dude and how it goes. :)

Hmm neither Vader, nor bombers.

Whoa! Sure enough! Completely blanked those out in my memory. I think I like flying it like this better.

There's some great ideas here. I especially like an iteration that gives everyone equal PS. That really fits my clumsy play style.

Thanks! Keep 'em coming.

Altering the deal. This deal gets worse all the time!

How about all PS4...

Rogue One (100)

Captain Yorr (28) - Lambda-Class Shuttle
Collision Detector (0), Darth Vader (3), Inspiring Recruit (1)

Gamma Squadron Pilot (22) - TIE Bomber
Unguided Rockets (2), Lightweight Frame (2)

Gamma Squadron Pilot (22) - TIE Bomber
Unguided Rockets (2), Lightweight Frame (2)

Black Squadron Pilot (14) - TIE Fighter

Black Squadron Pilot (14) - TIE Fighter

This I would call thematic and I think be fun to fly - you might even win a game or two

Omicron Group Pilot (21), Collision Detector (0), Tractor Beam (1), Rebel Captive (3), Darth Vader (3), Ion Projector (2) - 30
Scimitar Squadron Pilot (19), Tie Shuttle (0),Tactician (2), Operations Specialist (3) - 21
Scimitar Squadron Pilot (19), Tie Shuttle (0),Tactician (2), Intelligence Agent (1) - 19
Black Squadron Pilot (14), Crack Shot (1) - 15
Black Squadron Pilot (14), Crack Shot (1) - 15
Total: 100

and its true imperium style with all the dirty tricks in the book - ion, stress and tractor beams
