TO'ing vs Playing

By Englishpete, in Star Wars: Armada

I TO a fair bit and therefore do not tend to play in tournaments. I played in my first one in 2 years yesterday and discovered that TO'ing, whilst keeping me very up on the rules and their nuances did not keep me up on the nuances of playing. Theory lists vs reality was a rude awakening.

I went 6-5, 1-10 and 4-7 and it was down to my lack of playing time, special awareness etc. not being sharpened. (Oh and not being able to chip 1 hull of a tokenless, shieldless ISD despite shooting it with three separate 1 dice shots)

I don't regret playing one bit, had three great games against 3 great people, but it was an eye opener.

Any other TO's experience this?

In a casual level event (which most store tournaments are and which store champs MUST BE), you can function as a TO while also being a player. I find that so long as you appoint a second-in-command for instances in which your opponent may want a second opinion (for understandable reasons), it works out just fine. I TO and play at our FLGS events and it's good times.

My record speaks for itself, basically.

I try to play and TO. But I also refuse to let people sit out for a Bye, since the majority of our paid events are Fleet Patrols. So that means a disturbing amount of times I have to sit out due to the uneven number. I won't ask anyone else to make that sacrifice.

I've got one person that I directly nominate to judge my games when I'm playing. I'm also careful to appoint a 3rd because most of the time, I end up playing my Judge when I do play... Funny that.

But Regionals and above - I've already accepted that I am not allowed to play. Full stop. Rules Say.

I'm also looking at a fundraiser event or two, too... I've already ended up cycling most of my personally earned alt-arts back into prize kits for tournaments as well...

...

Speaking of which, anyone got a spare set of Engineering Tokens I can trade some Alt Art or Evades for? Special request and all...

I TO and play if there is an odd number without me.e

My lists as TO are designed to be super easy to play. My last was a Home Ome and two liberties with no squads. It makes it easy to play fast and to jump in and out of my game
