Star Wars wargame tables

By AldousSnow, in Star Wars: Legion

So, who's already theory crafting their Wargame table? Who's going to do a movie theme like Echo Base, Endor, Hoth trenches, or Mos Eisley? Who's going to the EU to build something out of the ordinary? My first inclination is to do a city or a similar location on Ord Mantell. The planet has awesome terrain. A rocky, volcanic landscape with sparse trees and shrubbery. Plenty of opportunity to do buildings, water, and other major set pieces. I'm having a hard time thinking of a terrain I'd like to do more at the moment.

What's everyone doing?

I prefer something more modular. Make a dedicated table, and it's the same battle for eternity, make a table of terrain tiles and placeable feature and items, and every battle can be a new one.

That said, yes, I'm spinning up for some Star Wars themed terrain items for my table.

Nice. Im strongly considering modular too. I have a table that is just a hair short of 6x3. I'm thinking about doing eight modular 1.5 sq ft sections. My brain keeps telling me to do Endor, but my heart is still wanting to do something a bit more outside the box like Ord Mantel or even Naboo.

Already jave plans/drawings done up for 2 boards, have a fair few in the earliest of planning stages. Will be posting a full log here once construction begins, early as tomorrow. Heres the current list o stuff to get worked on before release.

Echo Base

Sullust

Kamino

I don't have the space for proper gaming tables. I just finished a Jedha style mat and now started working on some modular terrain pieces that will go for some Jedhaish look but won't be too specific and could easily be used for other desert planets as well. I like my terrain to be as flexible as possible.

Who knows how I will react to a possible Hoth expansion...^^

I think I'm going down the scatter terrain tied to a generic battlezone or planet route; theming games makes them much more enjoyable than just some random encounter.

I started a thread for collecting ideas for playing games on Scarif, terrain, mission rules, etc.

I'm usually more attracted to doing something new than revisiting established settings, so I will work toward making some more generic scenic pieces. I have more temperate pieces of scenery already, so it makes sense to continue with that theme (time is limited). However, I have always wanted to base an army on swamps, so I am quite tempted to explore that route instead.

I'm looking at doing 1.5' modular tiles so I can change things up but if I were to make a dedicated theme table I'd want to build Anchorhead based on the map from The Old Republic. I really like the layout and I think t would play really nice with how the different levels could be made.

I am going to use game matts like this -->

They are double sided but even single sided is fine. You place terrain set pieces on top. In the case of the Battle Mats, because they are cloth, you can use foam or boxes underneath to make hills and other terrain level changes. On top you can put trees or buildings or whatever. This is easy to put up and then take down.

I suspect that FFG will have similar "official" mats for tournament play.

Endor is really just a nice generic "temperate" table with some oversized tree terrain dropped on it. So swapping out the big trees for normal ones and adding any number of other features can change the planet easily. A couple rolling grassy hills, a pond, and some Italian buildings and your Endor just became Naboo.

Likewise a "Junkworld" is really just an arid table with junk terrain. Removed the old starship hulks junkpiles and salvage cranes, and replace them with pourcrete building, vaporators, dunes and rock formations and Bam, you're now on tatooine... because for some reason it all comes back to tatooine....

Honestly, I really, really want a replica of the Kashyyk Docks map from the original Battlefront. So much nostalgia...

More likely, though, I'd probably make a plain desert mat, so that you can add some terrain and make it Geonosis, Jedha, Tatooine, Scarif, or Jakku with ease. Although a dedicated Scarif board would look REALLY nice...

How to build Kashyyyk table

Step 1: go to your local nursery

Step 2: buy a small tree

I think, when i'll decide to make my own table, I would go for old EU. It's difficult to decide what planet or location, but first that comes to my mind is - Mount Tantiss on Wayland.

My Terrain at the moment is desert, but I want mud time brown with green gifts on my bases this time; it should work well with the blacks and whites of imperials and make the camo on the rebels work.

So my plan is muddy with grass and then add separately based trees and shrubs and rocks to move around to be endor, kashyyk, yavin, starkiller or wherever that's a bit green. Then I'll start building specific things; a crashed ship, the complex entrance on endor, some sort of tree to tree walkways....

I'm working on a forrest moon of Endor map. Was working on my trees this weekend.

I'm going to use a mat, but go with thematic terrain.

I'm going to do desert first, Luke's childhood digs.

I also want to base battles using the star wars miniatures mats.

Ok, I have given this a LOT of thought. Too much, really. I am going to go with a modular board with permanent terrain on each section. The sections will be 1.5' wide and 3' tall - four of them to make the table 3' x 6' total. Each section will be flat on the sides so they are totally interchangeable, both directions. Doing it this way gives me the permanence of a nice wargame table with the flexibility of modular terrain. The only drawback is you will see straight lines on the battlefield where the boards line up. However, I think it will be worth it. I am going to go with a grass and stone landscape to simulate Naboo, Takodana, or Endor. I'll be able to also swap out sections that may each include (for example) a bunker on one, or perhaps a landing pad on another, or ruins, etc. These pics give a good impression of what I'm going to do...

I'll probably use the gameboard I made for Runewars a month or so ago. With some terrain I think it'll look pretty nice for this game.

Those are some awesome mats! I am tempted.

For those of us that may not have $80-100 to buy such nice blankets mats, you could make something similar using this technique, but I'd avoid the whole shearing step and just go with the shortest length hair you can find, or fleece or possibly even plush felt.

A question for more experienced wargamers:

When you go to a game store, how do you transport all your terrain & such? do you truck in a half dozen plastic tubs filled with all your things?

The only miniature gaming experience I have is Imperial Assault and X-wing--both have a fairly simple set up. I just bring a shoe box with my figs and dice/tokens plus a tube with my mat. Is it unrealistic to expect to bring my backpack & poster tube and essentially have everything I need?

Felucia is a good choice. Also, if you want to be creative with LED's and fibre optics, Umbara

I have used special carry-on 'luggage' type bags for my Imperial Assault stuff. They are made for transporting craft type stuff - stamp collectors, scrapbooking, etc. They roll and have expanding handles like normal luggage, but they're larger and more square. Something like this...

https://www.amazon.com/Darice-Rolling-Scrap-Book-Black/dp/B004WO6HUW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1504295611&sr=8-1&keywords=craft+luggage

I dunno about larger terrain pieces. I would think large plastic tubs would work best. I'm gonna make my gaming table out of 2' x 3' MDF board sections with permanent terrain built on each piece. I plan on just a simple shelf of some kind that I can put in the back of my suburban.

The biggest question for me is either building a board that is highly flexible, be it either suitable for multiple planets or at least modular for unique setups. Or... a one of a kind, specific planet focused on a specific location. The latter would need to be a show stopper to make up for all the flexibility of the former. And I've made my decision.

Ord Mantel. Mannett point, near the island of Avilatan. The location gives what is important to me to make a Star Wars setting. It has an equal balance of wild terrain, including a rocky shoreline, and grass swept plateaus, and sci-fi buildings, with a cliffside fortress built by space pirates.

Started the board today. It will be made of three 2x3 boards for purposes of mobility. Will update as progress is made.

I'm excited to see this. My board / terrain is alot less ambitious than what you're doing.

I don't know yet. Maybe I'll use my current wargames tables, or maybe I'll work on a new project. A lot of possibilities!
