In Armada (and X-wing) I collect both factions, but in full hobby tabletops like Legion will be I like to focus on one army (although I'll have the full core box painted up to trick err...recruit new people into playing). I love both sides so much for different fluff and aesthetic reasons. This is going to be tough.
Scared to choose faction!
I still tell myself I'm going to play both sides. Yet to see if that's practical.
Depends on what is in the Wave 0-1 release, or more importantly what are the cards in the expansions packs. With core troops if you were to want more than 2 because the expansion have cards not available in the core set they you may find yourself wanting more than may be reasonable. Sadly at this point we don't have that information.
I want to collect both, but I don't think that's practical for me me. Not only financially, but for storage space too! As with Armada, I'll probably end up picking the Rebels, as I dislike mirror matches, and everyone will probably gravitate towards Empire mostly. I'll definitely be keeping my core set Imperials though, for fun painting, and for lending to new recruits!
Probably pick a main faction and have a few key pieces that are off faction ease I will want to play both. Maybe collect each off the bat... it's a wait and see one.
Given the cards in model boxes approach, I don't think choosing a faction will work any different than it does in x-wing/armada. Sooner or later there will be must-have cards available only to the other one.
I don't see a problem in collecting more than one army. Other skirmishers like LotR required you to play both sides for years. To avoid mirror matches you always had to bring a "good" and an "evil" army to the tournament.

Runewars on the other hand never has cards usable by all factions, so maybe there is hope.
Chosing a faction is pretty difficult for me, too. The empire has more iconic options all around, but will be severely overplayed. For me personaly they have another problem: customizability. I want my force to be plausible within universe, but also have some room for uniqueness. That is difficult to do for the empire, as any pre-Endor force has to follow imperial doctrines closely. Environment (which is big, I am looking forward to some Sullust-style basing) and some miniscule markings are all you are getting, forget unique colourschemes. Post-Endor can be done and for example a Kashyyyk occupier force with blood markings and ill-kept equpiment could look amazing (and of course the fragmented empire is massive enough that you can create almost anything), but I'd also prefer Darth Vader not to be disconnected from the rest of the force. Rebels on the other hand can reasonably be customized to almost any extent, as rebel cells can vary radicaly throughout the galaxy. Add to that the salvaged clone wars vehicles that scream for rebel alliance custom paintjobs and the high likelyhood of snowspeeders...pretty interesting.

I'm fairly confident they'll use a Runewars model of upgrades too, especially since we've already seen troop upgrades that require specific models.
I just hope it doesn't get too messy with sub/extra factions. If ffg is smart it wont end up like some of their other games with generic upgrades locked in cross faction purchases for months/years.

This isn't true. There are a lot of upgrade cards in Runewars that are faction neutral. However, if you only buy the expansions of a single faction, you will have every faction neutral upgrade that exists in the game. You will never need to buy an expansion from a different faction.

Oh yeah, that's how I read his initial post anyway and what I'm pretty sure Legion will be like.
I'm torn between the two many for aesthetics. Rebels will have lots of variety built in with different species and more piece meal gear and armor.
Empire will have that cohesive theme throughout that will really highlight a unique paint scheme.
If pushed, I see a lot of people choosing the Imperials because
I heard in one of the interview videos that you would only need to buy one faction if you wanted to.
Both sides will have some nice models to choose from. Picking a side probably won't even need to be considered until about 2 expansion sets in. You will want some of both to start just so you can play at the game store and get other's excited.
- I'm gonna buy 1 or 2 core sets and maybe 1-2 expansions for each faction. I pretty much plan on hosting games at my place so I need a good range of models to use. I may or may not get it all painted...luckily stormtroopers look easy as **** to paint..hardest part is going to be priming the models or finding a white primer that won't go on too thick or ruin them. I'm kind of concerned about the model quality overall for these figures. All we have seen is the resin masters, the plastic ones aren't going to look as good or detailed...which is concerning cause the resin models didn't even look comparable to what GW does in plastic. If the models end up being horrid then I might scrap plans to even get into this game.
I've been playing 40k sense it began, back when it was Rogue Trader. Cost keep going up and rules keep getting **** on. I hear and see 8th is a bit better and still plan on selling it all to get into Legion. As a long time Tyranid player I don't see any hope for them.

I was pretty happy with the quality in Rune Wars. Not GW level, but I don't think they have to be with Star Wars.
For painting white, I prime black, basecoat with a very light grey (celestra from citadel), wash with black, then layer white on top. Sounds counter intuitive, but priming white always looks worse imo.

That's a decent method but it requires some layering with the grey to get it solid. Unsure about the black wash, the ones from FFG look shaded with a medium gray, black shading on white might be too stark and harsh. Probably gonna do mine like this:
black parts will just be abaddon black + mechanicus standard grey or leadbelcher highlighting.
And then a slightly watered down gloss varnish on the white, because stormtrooper armor has a certain shine to it.
I'll buy a starter, and play whatever, but if they don't have more factions in the pipeline upon release, it'll be a hard sell in my gaming group of 5+. We've gotten used to games where people pick different factions, just not sure people will want to play with 3 Imperials and 2 Rebels, etc. I mean everyone loved RW's mechanics, but they've all decided to wait for all four factions to be fully supported before diving in.

I wonder if they actually can pull off that business model with an full size tabletop kind of game. In X-Wing it is becoming a problematic entry barrier.
If I collect any it will be rebels because I already have an imperial army thank you very much!
Scared to choose a faction? I was like that too with X-wing, but I decided I had to start somewhere and I went with Rebels at the time.
As I learned the game, I learned to appreciate what each side had to offer. The same thing happened with Imperial Assault.
Now I just bounce around between factions (Scum/Mercenary too) depending on the mood. It's good to try them all, especially when you are at some kind of road-block with tactics, lists or the like, it can help give you a fresh perspective or a different way to enjoy the same game.
You have to start with one, might as well flip for it and let the Force decide.
don't be scared “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” hey WAIT go with the Empire!!!
