What to do with U-Wings?

By Captainflakk, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi all. At my venue no-one seems to have any luck with U-Wings. They seem really lackluster, and was wondering if anyone could give some build suggestions and some strategy suggestions? I'd like to go from the "joke" ship to the "better than I expected" if possible. I've played one paired up with a Wookie Ship (Low) and Biggs and had no luck. It was Cassian with push the limits, Baze, Jan Ors, Fire Control system and Engine Upgrade. Think there are 4 U-Wings at our venue and they never seem to do much.

Think I'm really not planning ahead with the pivot wing wing enough either. The brake and turn around seems good but I always have it on the +1AG and flipping it really seems to telegraph your next move to everyone.

Many thanks in advance and may the Force be with you.

This is great fun. Turns Cassan into a monster PTL tie striker / xwing combo.

Entirely to many pts but you have to spend pts to make pts!

Can fly over rocks at will.

Do very long wide strafin runs.

Pre movement boost or post movement boost to get the most from your 4 straight and 3 bank.

Pre movement boost to 1 speed sloop or k turn. But generally you never want to flip to landing.

stay in attack and loop around for favorable shots and stay unpredictable.

kanan makes your entire dial green so bumping matters alot less with advances sensors.

can take rage B-wing with jan ors as a dancing partner to turn one of the rec spec focuses to an evade.

that way u get basically 3 actions per turn.

this is my go to for casual games. This has much more bite than people expect and no one really anticpates how insanely fast it is.

i like to fly him with a torpedo and a fully kitted corran horn who gets alot of mileage from cassians pilot ability. Corrans better than poe here since the 5 straigh helps him keep up with cassian on those wide runs.

with poe you can fit intensity sabine tie fighter or cap rex.

probably wont win worlds unless nathan eide picks it up. But it definitely has won me a handful of games.

Cassian Andor — U-Wing 27
Push the Limit 3
Advanced Sensors 3
Plasma Torpedoes 3
Kanan Jarrus 3
Recon Specialist 3
Engine Upgrade 4
Pivot Wing 0
Ship Total: 46
Corran Horn — E-Wing 35
Push the Limit 3
Advanced Sensors 3
Flechette Torpedoes 2
R2-D2 4
Engine Upgrade 4
Ship Total: 51

The other list i love: 3x u wings set up as follows. Lots of health, tanky and dangerous with good rolls. Can bump 100% of the ships in your opponents list. Again basically never use the red zero flip. Its a death sentence.

Have come very close to beating a few meta lists with 3 of these because of all the health and speed but you gotta borrow Us for it since itd be silly to buy 3!

Blue Squadron Pathfinder — U-Wing 23
Advanced Sensors 3
Recon Specialist 3
Engine Upgrade 4
Pivot Wing 0
Ship Total: 33

I keep the wings forward even in attack since it looks so **** cool. Cant put a value on that!

Great suggestions @Boom Owl ! The only thing I don't have is the Ghost for the Kanan but I could easily borrow one. The E-Wing is another ship I have not flown a lot so makes me want to try it even more.

I go the other way and run a cheap Pathfinder with Reinforced Deflectors and Wookiee Commandos. 27 points, lots of health, and can freely use the focus token to control for reinforce deflectors, with commandos as your offensive dice mods.

Heff is a monstrous blocker with advanced sensors, Boshek and engine upgrade. Maybe Zeb crew as well for funzies...

I like to run him with Jyn, FCS, Zeb and a tax jammer with Biggs right behind, and two TLT Hawks (maybe ion y-wings these days...).

Will link my regionals report with Uwing/Biggs/Two TLT hwks .

Dont think its bad these days and it beat triple x7 defenders and Dengar Bossk etc, so it can definately put out damage in todays 1 and 2 agility meta, but with ordnance and bombs so prevalent, the hwks can get taken out before Biggs and as soon as the happens the list goes downhill quickly as your firepower just drops significantly. Havent touched a Uwing in awhile though, with Auzituck out, there really is no real place for them unless you really just want a large ship for real estate.

@gennataos runs them alot, and has had some good builds as well. Maybe he can chime in or link to his previous posts.

My favorite cassian build is FCS/Op Spec/Gunner/Engine Upgrade. EPT is wide open. I initially went with VI, but that was Defender meta with PS5 and 6's so PS8 with Engines was important. But many lists go 9+ these days, so maybe an EPT like Expert handling, DTF, or selflessness for support.

Thanks Wurms, I was trying to remember who I stole Heff/Biggs/RORO from!

I might have the rules wrong. But doesnt advanced sensors on the U allow you to boost with any of the 1 speed templates and then reveal the red zero to flip?

I actually own three U-Wings. I love them so much but also have a hard time making them work. I have recently run a Dash, Azituck, U-Wing list that has done pretty well. The most fun I have had with a U-Wing was running 4 of them with FCS. I lost the match but it was so much fun!

I see what you're saying now.

It's actually been quite a while since a ran a U-Wing. I won a small kit tourney with the list below and haven't gone back to that well since.

Biggs Darklighter (25)
R3-A2 (2)
Integrated Astromech (0)

Heff Tobber (24)
Fire-Control System (2)
Seismic Torpedo (2)
Jyn Erso (2)
"Zeb" Orrelios (1)
Tactical Jammer (1)
Pivot Wing (0)

Norra Wexley (29)
Push the Limit (3)
Tail Gunner (2)
R2-D2 (4)
Vectored Thrusters (2)
Alliance Overhaul (0)

Total: 99

I've thought about trying something like that again, replacing Norra with Bomblet/TLT Miranda, which is probably objectively better. The plan would be the same as it was with Norra, have my regen ship against whatever it could beat in the end game, Miranda being a better end game ship than Norra, there's not a lot which can beat her. Hmmm...

It came down to the wire with the U-Wing facing off against a Decimator. I got stuck in a corner and the decimator had a pilot that allowed it to run into me and apply 1 damage. It did this to me three times. I finally got away from it and performed a 0 move with a 180 degree turn. I fired first at range 1 and rolled all focus but was unable to turn them due to having no action. If I had rolled a better attack I would have won.

I have never used more than the one u wing I purchased, but I noticed a couple of things, with a stealth devise and a sensor jammer, they are extremely difficult to hit. but my favorite setup is with sabine, this ship is perfect for her. you take the extra munitions, and with sabine use proximity mines, cluster mines, or the connor nets, then in the sensor slot use the minefield mapper. in conjunction with the rebel scurrg, I had a beautiful play. I ran over my own mine and chose not to detonate it. the next turn I flipped the uwing and my opponent got to close to the mine, I chose to let it go off, and I sabine damage his ship that only had one hull left. his Nein Nub went poof and my opponent scooped. it was amazing.

Here's an alternative Uwing inclusive list:

U-Wing: · Cassian Andor (27)
Daredevil (3)
Fire Control System (2)
Engine Upgrade (4)
· Finn (5)
· Hera Syndulla (1)
Pivot wing (0)
YT-2400: · Dash Rendar (36)
Push The Limit (3)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Engine Upgrade (4)
· Kanan Jarrus (3)
· Outrider (5)
-- TOTAL ------- 100p. --

Using Daredevil you can stay in attack mode and use it for the equivalent of a T-roll off the 2 hard turn....as long as you can get arc on the last ship you engaged you can push a 4 die attack with Finn....Cassian should be pretty maneuverable this way.

The one I keep suggesting:

Cassian Andor (27)

-Adaptability (0)
-Accuracy Correctors (3)
-Flechette Torpedoes (2)
-Operations Specialist (3)
-Gunner (5)
-Pivot Wing (0)
-Munitions Failsafe (1)

Total: 41 pts

The idea is Aim to Miss . Fire off you Flechettes and stress your opponent , use you accuracy correct to cancel out your hits. (You do not need to add 2 hits, as of now it is optional.) Munition failsafe kicks in so you keep your torpedo. Your Operational Specialist kicks in, giving out a free focus token. Then you get to fire again with Gunner. (If he misses, again, you get another free focus token.)

I pair him with any number of Dash builds, but it is nice with any 58-59 point build with equal or less pilot skill. You get a small ship stressor, and a token creator. It is a neat little combo, but a bit over priced.

Try this one for egregious "hooning around like a fruitbat on nitrous oxide":

  • Cassian Andor
    • Pivot Wing
    • Daredevil
    • Advanced Sensors
    • Seismic Torpedoes
    • Kanan Jarrus
    • Kyle Katarn
    • Engine Upgrade

This way, you can set any white or green move (i.e. anything but 'stop'!) then before you reveal your dial you can either

  • Execute a 90' turn, receive stress, execute your manouvre, remove stress, receive focus (essentially making the daredevil action 'free'). Being able to do a 90' turn then a straight 4, or a speed 3 turn the other way to 'slalom' lets you do some seriously unexpected weaves. To make matters better, daredevil is a maneuver, so you can use it to flip pivot wing, cross obstacles or 'partially' execute it and collide with another ship if it's advantageous to do so.
  • Blow an obstacle out of the way and then straight-4 through where it was without recieving stress or damage

I've also seen a 'Blue Squadron' list suggested with 3 X-wings and a U-wing:

  • Rookie Pilot - R2 Astromech, Integrated Astromech x 3
  • Blue Squadron Pathfinder - Pivot Wing, Fire Control System, Gunner, Operations Specialist

Nice idea but sadly only useful against targets with a hull value of 4 or less

ok, I'm thinking of running this into a local tournament next month;

Dash Rendar (36), Outrider(5), Mangler Cannon(4), Veteran Instincts (1), Rey(2)

2x Blue Squadron Pathfinders (46) with; Pivot Wing (0), and Fire Control System (4)

total: 98

Heff is awesome with Sabine and chopper crew. Throw on cluster mines. After you bump, do the stop maneuver, do a 180 with the title, use chopper to drop mines in somebody's face. It's not the most competitive build, but it is one of the funniest things to do to someone who is not ready for it.

One of the drawbacks, but you can still fire your primary weapons for the focus ...
