Yet Another Sabine K-Wing...

By Cade Bulkin, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I did this k-wing a few months back for store championship season. I posted it on reddit at the time, but now that I've joined this community, I thought some of you might like it.

Advice on how to improve would also be much appreciated. I've still got a lot to learn.

Mostly it could just do with a bit of definition on the panel lines, maybe a light wash.

It's very well done otherwise.

I remember seeing it on reddit first time around - for a guy still learning it was a really ambitious job and you've pulled it off really well!

What it's really missing is a sense of depth, because you've painted over the lines in the panels so it just all looks a bit flat. A light ink wash and then some quick drybrushing would be the standard way of adding some of that back.

Alternatively you can try to just detail in the panel lines, if you're happy with your steady hands. You'd probably do that by just getting some black paint and watering it down, then using a fine brush with just a little bit of paint on, let the watered-down paint flow into the cracks in the panels.

This is a good example of where I've used strong colours then gone back in and detailed the panel lines back in afterwards...

I've thought about that a lot. I'm terrified of ruining it, lol. But no risk, no reward. And it does look rather flat.

Thank you!

I remember seeing that one. It's beautiful. I'm not 100% confident yet of my steady hand, but I may try outlining like you suggested that instead of a wash. I feel like there is less potential for damage. Thank you for the advice.

Fantastic job by a "noob" painter!

Here's something you could try: Gloss coat your model, then apply the thin wash. The smooth gloss helps the wash slip right into the cracks & crevices. Plus it helps when you wipe off excess wash from select areas. Once that's dry, apply a matte coat which both seals the model and removes the gloss.

For the wash, I'd avoid Nuln Oil. That will dull and darken the paint in a hurry. Maybe try an orange, or similar.

If that's not up your alley, you could try the fine line washing on the underside of the model first and see how that grabs you.

If you're up for it, I'd consider adding some engine glow. Not necessary, but I trust you could pull it off. You don't even need an airbrush.

Aaaahhh! I want that k-wing! Back when I was playing Miranda I always thought of painting one in Sabine scheme, I imagined orange all around but that one looks really good, perhaps missing the sense of deph like commented but I think you did an amazing job paiting it, I absolutely love that phoenix on the cockpit... great work! :)

Thank you! I may try that with the gloss. That's a good idea. This is actually my second attempt. My first attempt was terrible and then I washed it with nuln oil and it looked worse, lol.

And I want to add engine glow. That's a good idea.

Thank you! Originally, I wanted a small phoniex in the wing, but I could not get it to look right so tried it on the front and it came out much better!
