Yunako and Dashes

By Sometimes Y, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Someone brought this up on the L5R subreddit and it got me thinking. Can Bayushi Yunako swap the skill value of a character with a dash (ex. Moto Horde)? Per the RR:

"If a character has a dash for a skill value, that skill value cannot be modified or otherwise changed by card abilities and effects."

Does Yunako trading skill values constitute a modification or change in that sense? The consensus on reddit was that this is an illegal play, but I feel like I've seen it done/discussed on here before, and yet I can't find any proof of that now.

Yes it does constitute a modification or change. A dash stat is both a weakness, and a strength. Shoju can't talk an Seppun Guardsman to death. Challenger can't invite him over for tea and (backstabbing)cake. Yunako can't turn his steal into honor that is stronger than steal. While they are able to contribute nothing in that stat, they are also immune to the aggression of that stat.

Something in the Rules Reference that can help support this: pg 15

Perfect, thanks for the clarification. The Switch entry in the RR was something I was searching for, but somehow didn't think to look up in concrete terms.

I believe the dev team said we'd be getting subforums around the official release date.

There is a rules subforum on CardGameDB.

Interesting that the first four posts, discussing the subtle nuances of a rule, are a discussion between three Scorpions ! Hm...

I'm just kidding, of course. Paying careful attention to wordings has always been an important and fascinating part of card games. My personal favorite example is fromDecipher's Star Wars CCG. In one of their sets, they included a Glossary with many erratas and rules clarifications. Most of them were short, single-paragraph entries, but there was a 2-3 page entry just for Prepositions ! XD

I honestly think that's one of the things that helped spark my love for more complex card games!
