I'm really proud of how this Lava Rune Golem is shaping up, so here's a WIP shot with dramatic lighting included. What do you think?

Looks like lava to me.
Very intimidating on the battlefield
This looks really, really good! I assume you'll put him in a formation that so he'll always have Fire Rune?
Hot stuff coming through?
Looks good, nice work on the rock highlights.
Thanks! I guess I am obligated to run Fire Rune on him, huh?
Before Runewars, my only previous painting experience was Armada squadrons, which gave me tons of practice painting teeny tiny edge highlights.
WOAH! Red vs. Blue! I want to see that match!

Dude, you NAILED it!!! I love it!! I'm helping a friend with the exact same concept (his is more grey than black/onyx) but yours is gorgeous. I'm working on getting mine to that level of completion here soon.
Sweet im working on the same thing. Im going to make the swords look like obsidian shards though.

Nice, I hope you share a picture. I was thinking the same thing about obsidian swords, too!
You should hit the cloth bits with some blacks and grays on the outsides to give them a singed/charred look.
Really great looking lava though.
i want to do this but i think its beyond my level of patience. I got too many models to paint to put that level of detail in the cracks.
Plus, i really like the "central gemstone" idea anyway and that clashes with this idea.
Still, has to be the best lava effect ive seen in a long time.

Thank you very much! It was easier than you might think. I was deliberately sloppy with the blending to make it look more organic and random, so it was quick work. The only part that really required precision was highlighting the rock areas, which was more or less the same process as for a standard golem.
