With a reprint of the original starter coming out in the next month or so, which is more useful to a for fun player

By MandoBard, in X-Wing

Looking at trying to get into the game, and getting a for fun group up and going at my local shop which currently doesn't have an active group(although a few players and interested parties. May do a call out in the get together thread when I'm sure I have the time and funds to do it). So, looking at getting in, got a good idea of which additional ships I want(Scurgg, YT-2400, Starwing when it releases, HWK-290 and K-wing). Honestly a fan of the original X-wing and ties over the episode 7 ones, but I was wondering if in getting a group together there would be a disadvantage in one over the other.

Also would be more interested in getting a for fun scenario based group together rather than a straight up competitive group, any suggestions?

If you're not interested in competition and have a preference for OT ships, I think that answers your question right there, no? Beyond OT vs TFA content, the damage deck in the OT core has a lot of crits that whiff on generic ships, versus the TFA core that has more generally impactful ones, and a different set of asteroids. I don't know if they're packing the revised rulebook into the reprints, but it's available online anyway. And I think the rocks are different? Otherwise they're basically the same, so go with which one has the ships you like.

Play with the ships, not the cards. If you like the OT better, go for the original Core Set.

Original starter has Luke and R2. That right there makes it better if you are less interested in playing competitively.

I'll just echo mostly what the others have said: make it your prerogative to play the ships that you want to play, not just what is "competitive". Get good enough with those ships that they become competitive.

Very true! Yeah, I'm partially mainly paying for this with the bulk of my Heroclix collection I'm trading in(trying to reduce to my 50 favorite pieces or so) So definitely going with characters/ships I like. not that I won't have addition funds later on.

Ok then, I didn't dig too deeply, but any alternate game styles you'd guys recommend? I know that there are a few floating around(ran into a group playing a RPG/storyline variant one time) got any you guys can recommend? not that I won't be playing regular matches too from time to time

Do Heroes of the Aturi Cluster! Learning the system can be a bit difficult, but it is a blast once you get the hang of it! Otherwise, give the missions included with the packs a try, they're pretty interesting as well.

Eventually your group will need a 2nd starter set (dice, manoeuvre templates and damage decks) or more. One of each starter is better than 2 the same. There are also Facebook groups where you can buy 2nd hand fleets for about 50% new. The best bargains are for starter fleets with the 'basic' ships in, like the core sets and Falcon etc.

Agree 100%. You need more than 3 Reds and 3 Greens. 2 Damage Sets. 2 Sets of Rulers. 12 Asteroids...

Red Set or Blue Set? Luke + R2D2 vs Poe + BB8. Your choice?

I meant a starter for myself and my personal collection, I do expect all players to have their own starter

Ha! I just did the exact same thing. I've been slowly getting rid of clix over the past 18 months to fund X-wing. Last week I finally sold of the rest of my clix collection in one big sale and should be able to get the rest of the X-Wing stuff we want now.

I play mostly at home with my 11 year old, so we are very casual. We will often play 60 or 75 points instead of 100 since we can play much faster that we. We have started playing some of the missions that come with some of the ships. I've looked at Heroes of the Arturi Cluster that is a player made coop campaign but haven't tried it yet. It is the next thing we are going to try.

While I do stick with my original suggestion of the original starter first, it is a really good idea to get one of each eventually. It is nice to have the extra dice and templates for multiple players and also is a good value for the ships.

I find the game you can play with the TFA set is more fun as the T-70 is way more interesting to maneuver with than the T-65. BOOST ACTION!

Imperial player has all the fun in the original core set.

If playing casual with non habitual players or kids... Luke + R2D2 + proxy Vectored Ts or EU. Peeew peeeew

I've wound up getting two of each, plus one each of the expansion versions of the included ships, for 5 of each TIE fighter and 3 of each X-wing type. (Then it became 4 T-70s courtesy of Heroes of the Resistance...)

Cores are generally a cheaper way to get multiple ships than regular expansions.

That said, start with the core that inspires you more to want to play the game.

Think small, the core set and a few favourites...

And then lose control and get at least one of each! :)

is the reprint using the updated damage deck?

Yeah, after playing clix I know how to resist

I would like to know that two. The new DD is so much better balanced. Would be niche if the old would fade out someday.

A lot of folks really like Heroes of the Atauri Cluster (sp?) but personally I had trouble really diving into the system. Granted I never gave it a solid effort, it's hard for me to get a larger group together on a regular basis.

Think about playing the missions that come with large ships and ace packs. Also, when you get there, think about an epic ship. They come with mini campaigns to play through, and epic play is a whole different world than standard play.

Another cool idea (but it involves owning a lot of stuff from different FFF games) is to try and tie it into Armada, Imperial Assault, the upcoming Legion, or an RPG. There are some articles on the last option on the FFG site. I personally love the idea of having a triple game going on to recreate the battle of scaarif. Armada battle over the shield gate, X-Wing battle in the atmosphere, and eventually a Legion battle on the surface.

Use a station from Armada as the shield gate, if squadrons get to the gate they can reinforce the X-Wing game. If U-Wings can get to an objective marker and sit still for a turn, then they can reinforce the Legion battle.

The entire objective of the rebels is to keep imperial ground troops from getting into the tower, and after they get the plans out, a C-90 in Armada has to escape before Vader shows up and destroys it.
