Is there a Palpaces v2?

By BlackCadian, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey guys,

we have another club tournament coming up in a few months, and this time I wanted to get a bit of a head-start unlike last time.

I tried both Scum and Empire a few times since then but still had the most fun with Palpaces which I flew in the first tourney. So I was wondering if by now there might exist a kind of Palpaces 2.0 what with all the new cards and ships having come out in the meantime? Maybe with a Striker instead of the nerfed Defender or something?

By the way our meta isnt super competitive.

Thanks!

These are more like Palp Ace though I consider RAC an Ace to at this popint. Destroy them. For the Empire.

If its an ultra competitive environment than I can think of no better list to bring than a variation on one of these two lifted sorta directly from Worlds and Gencon.

If enough of us start flying Kylo we can push PS10 Nym out of the Meta.....but at what cost.....

This:

Rear Admiral Chiraneau — VT-49 Decimator 46
Adaptability 0
Emperor Palpatine 8
Kylo Ren 3

Dauntless 2
Ship Total: 63
"Quickdraw" — TIE/sf Fighter 29
Expertise 4
Fire-Control System 2
Lightweight Frame 2
Special Ops Training 0
Ship Total: 37

OR

This:

"Whisper" — TIE Phantom 32
Veteran Instincts 1
Fire-Control System 2
Advanced Cloaking Device 4
Ship Total: 39
Rear Admiral Chiraneau — VT-49 Decimator 46

I don't know of any mainstream Palp aces build out there. However, this is the latest Palp ace build I'm looking to fly:

[35PT] Darth Vader
TIE/x1
Veteran Instincts
Engine Upgrade
Advanced Targeting Computer

[36PT] Quickdraw
Veteran Instincts
Fire-Control System
Sensor Cluster
Special Ops Training
Lightweight Frame

[29PT] Omicron Group Pilot
Collision Detector
Emperor Palpatine

If you equip Intensity instead of Expertise you have enough room to put Primed Thrusters on and give RAC VI instead of Adaptability.

Also of note; Palp can be used before the extra die you roll for LWF.

That's an interesting spot. I shall have to bear that in mind!

Fairly niche situations where it'd be important, but worth knowing if you're not sure if it's worth throwing him in or not (say, 1 incoming critical and you blank out the first 2 dice)

I agree with the previous, I think RAC/Ace of choice is as close to Palp Aces as you can get anymore. Either shuttle just doesn't cut it anymore. 6 months ago I had the new upsilon with Palp and Electronic Baffle, Vader, and VI Duchess. You could have easily put in Omega Leader. Unfortunately you really need to push damage through and most of the time a pocket ace isn't going to cut it. Pure Sabacc is an interesting choice though if you try that route. During my last store champs I figured the best way to combat Nym was with Ions, so my list was this:

OGP/Palp/Baffle
Jax/PTL/RGP/AT/Targeting Computer
Ryad/A score to settle/TIE-D/Ion Cannon

I tried to give up the baffle on the shuttle to get vessery in there, but in the end just couldn't figure out how to best play that vs the current meta. Maarek was an interesting alternative though. I took RACLO-Palp/Fel to my final store champs and hit top 4 out of 28. My analysis figured that anything that could kill the TIE D Defender would probably die to autothruster ace, and viceversa. Palp just helps things along. But I expect a few shots out of my shuttle so I use it more in battle/blocking mode than running around providing a crit mode. Same with RAC. Most boring game I had all day with RACLO/Fel was vs FSR2 with double wookie ships. It took me 6 or 7 rounds to get rex away from Biggs, killed him, then biggs next. He gave up then.

This is only 1 ace but I think there might be some potential here for a solid list-

DOUBLE EDGE

98 points

PILOTS

“Quickdraw” (36)
Special Forces TIE (29), Intensity (2), Fire-Control System (2), Primed Thrusters (1), Special Ops Training (0), Lightweight Frame (2)

“Double Edge” (31)
TIE Aggressor (19), Ruthlessness (3), Unguided Rockets (2), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Lightweight Frame (2)

Omicron Group Pilot (31)
Lambda-Class Shuttle (21), Collision Detector (0), Emperor Palpatine (8), Anti-Pursuit Lasers (2)

================

There is some room to mess around with some different options. If you forego the 2 point bid and the APL you can upgrade QD to Expertise/Sensor Cluster. You could simply add FCS to the OGP to improve it's offense. You could swap APL for Engine Upgrade to improve the mobility. Unguided Rockets are by no means required on Double Edge either, so you can gain a couple points there as well. Dropping those and APL would allow QD to upgrade to Expertise/Cluster and OGP to upgrade to Yorr. I just haven't been able to mess around with it as much as I would like to find the optimal set up but I think these 3 ships have some potential.

I think in your list above I would just swap out Double Edge for a 30 point Kestal:
Kestal, VI, Ion Cannon Turret, Lightweight Frame

Then you're at 97 points with a bid at PS9 on both aces. Kestal just about wrecked my Fel's face in last weekend and I imagine he'd do the same to Fenn Rau, Nym, etc. Pretty easy control as long as you can get a focus token!

I think you may be onto something here.

Very interesting!

One of the reasons I had Double Edge was to have a better chance of triggering Ruthlessness to help break Biggs squads. Kestal probably has about the same odds of triggering Ruthlessness w/ a focus token as Double Edge though, so- do you think PS 9 is that important on the turret carrier if you're locked into using Focus anyways? My initial thought is nah, so maybe keep Ruthlessness (which can trigger your own QD sometimes btw) and drop APL to keep the 3 point bid?

VI kestal gets you at 97 points which is much stronger of a bid these days. Around here I see a fair bit of Fenn Rau and Miranda. So a bid with PS9 gets Kestal to walk both those ships off the board (or just kill them). As long as you survive the alpha it can ion the **** outa Nym as well. If you see more FSR I could see Ruthlessness being a little better.

If you get rid of APL I'd strongly recommend Electronic Baffle on the palp shuttle. Its pretty brutal when the palp shuttle does a 0 stop, pitch the stress for a damage, then focus. If Palp is firing last you almost always get 3 or 4 damage on dice with Palp's help.

Like this latest thought and was thinking, would parking the shuttle in front of something ioned with ion projector instead of APL and palp to guaranty the ion worth the effort/pts???

I know someone who did this (ion palp) and it is really sweet. The ship is permanently stuck. With ion cannon kestal to set up the bump, you could also set it up with a ion missile on Quickdraw or on a tlt kestal. Many ways you can spin this strategy
