Question about Talents and Career Skills

By ChikaraSubs, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Dear Community,

I have a question regarding the talents that make certain skills become career skills, such as Well-Travelled and the various forms of Combat Training. If the character already has the specified skills as career skills, do they still have to pay the XP cost for the talent in order to progress further down the specialisation chart? Alternately, can they be skipped similar to talents that have only one rank?

Many thanks.

You still have to purchase them.

Unfortunately, any redundant career skills are wasted. It stinks, but the specified ones tend to have lower costs.

They cannot be skipped over, but there are a few paths through the talent tree that can take you around them so you can get all the Talents you need without having to purchase them. It may delay access as you buy down, over, and back up the tree to get there, and you could always instead opt to take the faster option by paying the "XP tax" and just taking the useless Talent(s).

If you actually did buy the talent in another tree (and that's why those skill became career) then the usual already-bought rule comes into play and it counts as bought in the current one too. Offhand I know that Well Traveled shows up in at least two trees and some of the others may be similar.

Otherwise you have to buy your way around it as per HappyDaze's post, or just buy straight through it (which isn't too big a deal if it's a 5-10 XP one).

What Garran says is correct, if you already purchased the Talent in question in another tree, and it's a single rank type, then you don't have to purchase it a second time if you come across it in another tree. Of course, if the talent is ALWAYS going to be redundant to your Career, regardless of what spec tree you start with, then yeah, you will either have to buy around it, or just eat the XP cost as a loss.

Some generous gms may even house rule that it gives you a rank if you already have the skills but no ranks.

Can't say as I've heard of any that are that generous but hey it doesnt hurt to ask.

I mean, it's not unreasonable, you are spending XP on the talent, and getting nothing out of it. So I might let a player put that XP towards their next skill rank in that skill. But only one time.

So, for example, let's say they have to buy a talent that gives them a skill they already have, as a class skill. And there is no way around it, this is a forced purchase due to progression. And it costs them 10xp since it's on the 2nd row. I would, if they asked nicely, probably allow that 10xp to be "invested" into one of the skills as a result. Let's say they already had 3 ranks in a skill, so the next time they bought a rank of....whatever, Diplomacy let's say, it would cost them 20. Since they burned 10xp for no benefit on this redundant talent, that directly relates to Diplomacy, I'd be willing, as the GM, to say they basically spent 10xp into Diplomacy with that purchase. So then to buy that 4th rank of Diplomacy, would only require an additional 10xp investment.

That seems perfectly reasonable to me, as I'm not a big fan of having players waste XP simply due to mechanical structures of progression.

I mean, the XP is supposed to reflect them gaining further ability and skill due to their actions and adventures. Spending it reflects them actually improving in some way. So just losing XP "because meta-mechanics" seems counter-intuitive to me.
