Who is Buying This? Who is sticking with IA?

By colvinatch, in Star Wars: Legion

Team Covenant had an excellent discussion on this on the Gencon podcast; basically, Legion seems to be a miniature war game that you may break out to have a good time and get some cool minis to ogle at and get into the hobby aspect, but not for the competitiveness necessarily seen in other ffg games.

IA simply does a better job with the 65 min tournament rounds a fills the tournament itch. I can see this as a competitor to the Runewars player base. Of note, Gencon had a 16 player Nationals for Runewars.

So really both have there place.

I will follow its development with interest, but I enjoy the dungeon crawling nature of IA.

Now if they brought out something in the gentleman's scale (6mm) that would TRUELY be worthy of the name 'Legion'!

(AT-AT squadrons anyone?..or is Battalion the preferred group noun??)

I'll definitely be buying both. The only thing I plan on quitting is Warhammer 40k. I'll be boxing all of my 40k miniatures up, hopefully Legion will find a player base big enough to totally replace that for me. If you think there isn't a healthy tournament scene for a game like Legion I think 40k is proof it works. I don't personally care for the skirmish mode in IA that much, but my boys and I absolutely love the campaigns. I'll buy all of everything I can for both games moving forward, they fit totally different game genres for me.

Imperial assault campaign with the app all day everyday!

legion is a hard maybe. I'm bitter about the scale bump. I want one comprehensive SW miniature collection. Not two partial collections in different scales. Gah! Why FFG why!

Well considering they stopped producing new Descent plastic when Runewars started production, you may not need to make this choice.

All descent products are back into the reprint que. they are not dropping decent.

Intresting to note however is that Rune Wars miniatures are also a bit larger compared to Descent models. It could possibly be a nearly identical scale bump we see from IA to Legion

I'm in with IA, I have everything released till today and I love the system.

About Legion, since I also have RW, I'm going to wait and see if this game succeed in my country before to buy anything. I also need to know if FFG is going to follow the RW upgrade card distribution system or X-Wing / Armada and check if FLGS and miniature wargame community support the game.

I'm going to collect and play both.

I would probably have tried Legion if it was compatible with IA, but I am not interested enough to repurchase everything. At least, Games Workshop let you use Space Hulk miniatures in your 40K games (on the other hand, they just made my 3*10K points epic armies obsolete by releasing Adeptus Titanicus in 8mm instead of 6, but given how few of us Epic players are left, I don't feel too bad about it)...

I stopped buying X-wing because the new releases don't have my interest. I even didn't bought any of the "blue" boxes because it began to be to expensive in combination with IA.But I will still playing it. To much fun with this game :)

I stopped buying and playing the IA campaign because we just didn't managed to align all our agenda's in the club. I start buying it with the hope to use the figures in a future tabletop game. So this hope was idle, because the figures of Legion are bigger :/

Legion on the other hand is the game I was allways waiting for. A tabletop miniature game with star wars figures. :)

I had prefered that FFG brought out a single lign of miniatures and separatly the different rulesets. Then you only had to buy figures one time (or twice if you include the core-sets) and you could have bought the rulesets you wanted. Afterwards they could have relaesed different add-on figure packs and different add-on card packs for the right rulesset.
But I have to say, there bussinnesplan works :)

Buying everything in the way they relaesing it now, is for me (and I think with me a lot of others) just not possible. Not only financial, but also in roomspace. I just can't stack everything.

So in short : I'll stop buying x-wing (except the epics :) ) and IA, and my focus is going to Legion.

Yeah, the app really sold a lot of Descent, so they had to reprint a bunch. Nevertheless they stopped producing new Descent content a year ago and started Runewars. Since there is so many reprints needed for Descent, it stands to reason another Descent box will come out with app support at some random point in the future.

I do agree FFG is going with larger figures now. Easier to paint and more detailed. The Descent figures were so small I am not sure there was an intent for them to be painted by most.

I have a lot of IA, and I absolutey love the campaign, but skirmish never really did it for me. I wanted the ground based skirmish aspect, but not the fiddly aspect of building the board, the command deck, etc... for a skirmish game over in just a few rounds.

Legion is what I always wanted Imperial Assault skirmish to be. Like I said, the campaign is a blast, but with jobs and now families, it's hard to get my friends together and pour enough time into a campaign, often only one or two people can get together on a chosen evening, and Skirmish just all too often fees like empty calories.

So ultimately, I am definitely buying Legion, and I'm unsure if Imperial Assault is getting put into storage or maybe sold.

If you want something less fiddly than IA for skirmish I don't think Legion is going to do it for you.

I don't see how working with upgrade cards makes the game fiddly. It's simple, you build your army and get the necessary cards together when you have time outside the game. If you have your cards well organized this takes 5mins.

the phrase was "less fiddly" than IA. witch I highly doubt Legion will accomplish. FFG games are very component intensive. legion likely has the same degree of fiddly ness just in a different flavor. worst thing about IA is map building who knows what challenges will happen with Legion

I am relatively new to IA and absolutely love it.

Intend to get Legion but no intention of quitting IA.

I'm all in on IA for Campaign.

I don't really have the opportunity or want to do Skirmish.

I am in no way interested in Legion.

With any new FFG competitive game it'll take 1-2 years before it reaches a good place. At least IA had the campaign mode to keep the game alive until skirmish was balanced and fun.

Skirmish is balanced? When did that happen? :P

Could someone explain to me how it would effect IA if they just pivoted and started making those models to scale with Legion? Would that break skirmish?

As I understand it, the base size in Legion is too big for the grid squares in IA.

Changing the scale of a line would piss folks off quite a bit.

Aren't the IA figures already to big for the playmats?

None of the ones I have are. The bases are all small enough to fit on the grid, unless the model is intended to be oversized.

Interesting i was told the mats are smaller than the tiles.

I love Descent with the app, and was waiting to get into IA until it got an app. Now that Legion is coming, I doubt I'll be buying any IA, and probably am done with RuneWars and Xwing as well. I'll still collect Armada just because I love the ships.

That could be, I don't have any of the mats... But I don't play IA much anymore.
