Admiral Thrawn Ability + 3rd Imperial Epic

By RufusDaMan, in X-Wing

So Thrawn is famed for his tactical genius and elite soldiers fighting for him. He was the best tactician strategist, armed with the most elite...

Following that theme.... what if Thrawn had an ability like Jabba, but for Elite Talents.

When you equip this card, place 1 Elite token on each Elite Upgrade card in your squad. When you are instructed to discard an Upgrade card, you may discard 1 Elite token on that card instead.

Thrawn would come out on the 3rd Imperial epic, the Imperial Light Cruiser (or Arquitens class), with a repack of the TIE Adv. Prototype, coming with several cool discardable EPT-s.

TIE Adv. Prototype includes the lesser inquisitors (probably as a generic, Inquisitor Acolyte or sth, PS 7 generic) and some imperial aces. Maybe some well known TIE pilots.

The Arquitens would have a different setup, maybe even 3 base, than the previous epics, and would have other cool crew members, like Constantine, the bitchy administrator from Lothal.

Missing SKU Dreampack I tell you.

And how much would it cost ?

Thrawn would be the perfect upgrade which does literally nothing ingame, but allows you to bring a side-deck instead. His troops are always "magical" prepared correctly for battle and so it comes all together just as he has planned. Actually it would fit that he is not even on the board, but is placed outside, together with twice upgrades worth twice as many as himself. which are free. During setup you can than equip those upgrade cards, until you reach Thrawn's point value.

Always having autothrusters when you need them, always having the right counters, etc that is what Thrawn is about.

edit:
BTW, the Arquitens is too big at about 250m. Which is a shame, because I would have loved to see the Vigil-Class Corvette instead, but that is as well 250m long. The raider is just 150m.

I don't want Arquiten's sized ships to be a thing in X-Wing.

If Imperial's get a 3rd epic, I want it to be their equivalent of the Rebel Transport. Like the Imperial Cargo Ship .

Granted...not the most appropriate ship for Thrawn...

If you read the new Thrawn novel, he gets his imperial career started on a gozanti. Why not an IGV-55 Listener? It is a modified gozanti, lacking the docking but could offer all sorts of shenanigans and could be an unarmed epic akin to the rebel transport. Thematically, it suits Thrawn.

I was literally just wondering if a Vader in a Tie Adv Protype would be viable. I'm pretty sure that is what he is flying in Rebels and thinking that at 24-26 point base ship, with tons of action economy between his ability and the title, but limited to two die attack without adding the crit... pretty sure he gets into Meta as a cheaper PS 11 Alpha Striker with tons of defensive ability (3 Agility, Focus, Evade, and Autothrusters). At the very least it would be an auto-purchase if an epic had a new Vader and Thrawn. :) Take my money FFG!

In Rebels Vader flies in his "regular" TIE Advanced.

It's hard to see, but you're probably right. I just assumed based on the timeline, no worries. If FFG thinks "historical accuracy" is worth more than my money then so be it. ;)

Rebel player just spammed ps1 pilots with no upgrades like a noob.

FFG will never release the Arquitens in X-wing scale. Besides, the next Imperial Epic is quite a ways out. We'll get the second Scum Epic next. Then, most likely, the cycle will start over with a Rebel ship. My guess is the Hammerhead Corvette.

I really hope they dont make him epic only. Imperials are in desperate need of unique Crew upgrades and hes an opportunity for a good one. We need a new Palp and it's either him or Snoke

Despite the deceptive name, the TIE/v1 Advanced Prototype was not connected to Vader's fighter (the TIE/x1), it was a prototype of a replacement for the standard TIE/LN Fighter.

Vader already had his x1 when the v1 was unveiled. timeline wise it is likely that the v1's were the next step in compacting the technology down after the x1 showed you could fit shields and hyperdrive into a TIE.

I'd love the Arquitens. Sadly I don't think we will ever see one. :(

Rebel epics first, after the second 'corvette' Scum epic. (Probably Jabbas ship?)

The Hammerhead Corvette followed by the Dorean gunship sounds like the most likely ships since one is around 'corvette' size and the other is 'transport' size. And they are both FILM CANON.

I'm at a loss for any good candidates for Imp epics, they just build everything so big.

Dual sided card.

On flip - pick 1 ship. This turn it moves last and you can dial in any maneuver.

FAQ: on initiative - if two or more players pick the same option in the same turn then initiative is used to determine who moves first.

+1 for Dornean gunship.

Obviously Thrawn will be able to instantly cause Sabine (crew or pilot, rebel or scum) to be destroyed on deploying forces.

I like the idea of an Extra Munitions/Jabba for Elite Pilot Talents. Adrenaline Rush, Cool Hand, and Lightning Reflexes could use the help. Sadly, Crack Shot exists.

Vigil Class Corvette!!

Thrawn ability:

Grand Admiral Thrawn: (condition card or something)

Action:Choose one enemy ship at range 1 - 3 and assign it the ?grand admiral thrawn sounding quote? condition card.

  • ?grand admiral thrawn sounding quote? condition card:

That ship this card is assigned to must plan with its manoeuvre dial faceup. At the end of the activation phase, remove this card.

Maybe for 2 points? it's a bit better than Intelligence agent, but it costs an action. And unique. Also, the wording doesn't really make a sense. You make an action in the activation phase, so it only reveals the dial of ships which did not move yet, and at the end of the phase it gets taken down, so you can't use it against higher PS ships (which is fine, but then it is strictly worse than the Intelligence agent.)

To make it better, have the condition be unique, but it does not get removed until Thrawn is removed from play, or he assigns it to another ship.

That way it is sufficiently different from intel agent, and is quite strong for a supposed point value of 4-6 depending on crew slot requirements.

the arquitens class cruiser would be over 3 feet long even in the too-small-for-x-wing 1/390 the other epics are at. too big for the game.

i would buy 1 as scenery mind you, cuz its gorgeous, but it could never fit on a table. theres a great Rebels episode where imperial ships of increasing size jump into orbit to fight a yt2400, and it illustrates scale pretty well.

See I think he should be like Kallus only better. Maybe a Condition card that says

During the place forces step select a ship and assign the "Know Thy Enemy" Condition card.

Know Thy Enemy

A ship with the Know Thy Enemy Condition card must place their Dial down Face up before any other dial may be placed during the activation phase. When Grand Admiral Thrawn leaves play discard the Know Thy Enemy Condition card.

So crackshot?

Thrawn would be cool as a super support crew.

Grand Admiral Thrawn: 6 points: 1 crew slot: Dual Card:

Side 1: At the start of the maneuver phase, choose 1 friendly ship. You may change the chosen ship's pilot skill to 0, 6, or 12 till the end of the combat phase. Then flip this card.

Side 2: Action: choose 1 friendly ship. That ship may immediately perform 2 free actions. Then flip this card.
