I just watched a demo FFG did at Gen Con, and during the demo they did not have enough dice. Seems like every game you need to buy more dice. Sigh.
Not enough dice, classic FFG.
Yeah, this one i'm certainly not defending. They do it deliberately every game, the sneaky sods
And this might be the worst yet. All signs point to there being 3 of each type of die, and there are instances in the core set when you roll twice that amount...
I'd guess 3 more of each in the inevitable (and i imagine soon to be pre-orderable!) dice pack.
2 core sets.
I'm unsure on 2 cores for once. It'll really depend on unit prices, as it's not as though I need 2 vaders and lukes.
It'll likely still work out cheaper than the units, dice and extra movement tools etc separately though.
Resale of characters would be an option for a long-time existing game. Sadly right off the bat you probably won't get much. A lot will depend on how much more expensive the individual boxes are.
As for dice, it is kind of unfortunate. I'll have to take a look at some play throughs today.

Not to mention the upgrade cards that will be in the Storm Trooper and Rebel Trooper packs... But I suppose it depends on how many troopers you want.

Based off RW where you pay like $30 for a basic unit, I think it will be worth it. Even if Legion is $20 for the troopers, I'd get what looks like 2 trooper squads per core, plus the vehicle which may be $30-40. And I get all the other essentials like dice, range and move tools.
When wave 1 drops, I only need to get 1 of each of the reprinted core packs unless it has important upgrades.
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I'd be surprised if it wasn't cheaper to get a core.
Tbh, whenever I get a new FFG game now I basically budget "2 cores and 1 of each expansion" automatically....
Anybody knows if some upgrade cards can be used by both factions?
actually, dice aren't really an issue for this game, since it's just a simple D8/D6 system as I explained in this thread.
You just need to do a really simple conversion of the stat cards for the units.

The Long-Range Comlink doesn't seem to be restricted in any way, other then the upgrade slot. I assume there will be other faction neutral upgrades.
They really should include enough for the friggen CORE. But they dont.
Xwing even just the original core box you commonly rolled 4agi or 4attack
Armada i think was fine, i forget if the core had any added dice upgrades
RWM was close to fine but still had instances where you needed more dice.
And now Legion....bleh. Almost wish they just went with standard D6's or D20s, since i got a ton of those.
Not that this is a defense, but if you have the app already, I'm sure they'll add the dice to it.
In X-wing, the core dice are almost sufficient. Armada is worse. This looks to be possible worse than Armada.

Based off what Alex Davy said and following Rune Wars' example the expansions will probably be $20 - $25 for troopers. So taking that in mind the two squads of the rebels and imperials will either be about the same cost as the coreset if not more.

In the Armada Core you get 3 of each dice and the only pieces that roll more than 3 consistently in the box are the X-Wings against other squadrons. The Vic, Neb, and CR-90 all throw max of 3 of one color dice. If you concentrate fire to add a dice on Neb or Vic you will need to scoop one, but I hardly thought Armada was bad when it came to the number of dice in the core vs the ships you got.
In Legion it sounds like you may need to scoop your whole roll, in which case rerolls might get messy. Might end up needing a pad of paper to record roll results or something.

Armada Core box worked. But a ship in Wave 1 and two ships in Wave 2 broke the system right out of the gate, and that was before taking any modifications or upgrades into account. Most of the ships today can break 3 dice in a single color except for the very smallest ones.
The vast majority of X-wing ships are still under the core box dice limit with only a few outliers.
But yes, Legion looks to be very ugly for recording results. Honestly 2 core and a dice pack may be necessary. lol
The sad part is dice are super cheap to produce, so you know it's just a way for them to pad their profits. Not as bad as Modiphius though. 7 dice for $24!

If range didn't exist, you'd be right. But you can't even get out of the demo game without at some point needing a 4th red die for an x-wing shooting at range 1 or a 4th green die for a TIE Fighter being shot at range 3!

This. This is always their plan
Oh man the dice thing ... it's really a pain. I recently bought up a ton of Battlelore 2e while stock is still cheap and then realized the dice set is OOS basically everywhere and prices had already increased to approximately 30USD! BTW the BL core box only came with FOUR dice!
If you want to play a FFG game long after it is OOP, do yourself a favor and get plenty of the proprietary dice while they're in print.

Do people still use the dice app? Do people allow the dice app? I remember there being some dispute over the actual randomness of the app forever ago (yes, probabilities, averages, blah blah blah)

The app is officially supported, so short of walking away from the table, you really don't have any choice on if it's used or not.
Here's what the X-Wing tournament regulations v121 says...
QuoteIf a player uses the Star Wars™ Dice App, the device with the app must be displayed in full view of both players at all times, and their opponent may request to share the app.

DOH!
It's been a couple years since X-wing hit the table in my house, I completely forgot about the range rule.

Vader Squad vs. Luke Squad. Clone Wars redux.
