Scared to use Corran!

By Darth-Meepy, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I've never used Corran Horn. Ever.

I keep meaning to try him out as he obviously has a lot of damage output potential, but to be effective he seems to need a lot of upgrades and become very expensive - while remaining very fragile. Especially with more bombs around these days, he seems very vulnerable.

Can anyone persuade me to take him???

Corran isn't so obsolete, just needs skill and practice to fly effectively.

Standard builds weigh in around 48 points, with R2-D2 and Engine Upgrade included.

The key here I feel is to load up a tough wingman/woman. Namely:

Super Dash - Dash with PtL; Kanan; HLC; Outrider and Engine Upgrade*

Fat Han - Threepio; classic Falcon title; Predator/Wolf; Engine Upgrade*

Flawless Rey - Finn; Kanan; new Falcon title; Expertise/Veteran Instincts; Engine Upgrade*

You can hang Corran back somewhat with a beefy partner that can absorb and dish out damage.

* - not exactly costed in correctly or optimally built, they're just rough estimations.

Thanks for this - I was looking at flying him with either Dash or Rey with similar builds to that (although I don't have a Kanan card yet), so sounds like at least I was along the right lines.

I guess I'm just a bit scared of the 2 hull points for such an expensive ship. There seems to be a lot of bombs and ordnance around at the moment, and I can see him going pop very quickly...

So for Corran himself, do you go for PTL to make use of both engine upgrade and barrel rolls if needed to stay out of arc, or ideally just the one and focus? Or do you go VI to ensure you go last and actually know where to be?

I would suggest searching for any game on YouTube featuring Nathan Eide.... he seems to be the "Corran Master". - become his online padawan.

He is undoubtedly the most successful Corran player and always seems to have 3+ ships (Corran + 2).

Corran with PTL, Engine Upgrade, R2D2 seems the build of choice... then usually Fire Control (offence) or maybe Advanced Sensors (Manoeuvre).

Generally he seemed best when playing a "long" game of hit and run.

I like playing with Corran a lot. I use his ability every other round.

i flew him twice last night for the first time on vassal. once with PTL and once with VI.

Once with Cassian as his wing man because U-Wings are fun and the second time with Aeron/Sabine Tie.

Some immediate observations from a fellow corn horn newb. All of this is highly questionable, since I have flown him as i said "twice".

1. Dont Joust, ever

2. Having never used any regen ship before its sorta "forgiving". Take dmg? Run away until full health.

3. Focus + Evade is your friend. A 5 straight + boost or BR is your best friend.

4. Dont double tap that often.

5. If you lost a shield or 2....dont immediatly do a green. Sometimes the smart play is to do a hard turn or something else that simply gets you out to turtle. Then next turn 3 straight or something and regen for a bit.

6. Advanced Sensors: I have always liked to use this on Whisper and U Wings because its incredibly forgiving and lets you do some things your opponent is less likely to predict. Or simply do things that even if they do predict it are favorable to you.

7. If you end up with a complete PS Advantage with PTL at 8 you should have a shot at soloing certain entire lists. Corn is basically Rebel Whisper made easier by Regen.

8. I plan to fly Corn at PS10 for awhile to get used to surviving with only having one action.

9. Joust or No Balls. K Turn or No Balls.

10. People will tell you FCS is better. Depends on your skill level. In my opinion AS is a much more balanced upgrade and makes me far less predictable and importantly compensates for my near constant mistakes (not a crutch(TLT/Nym/Miranda/Turrets/Dash/KananCrew/GeniusBombs/Regen/Kylo/etc are a crutch ). Corn gives no crits about rocks or bumps or K Turns with AS. He cares about them with FCS.

11. Its not that hard, but it feels like theres a ton of stuff people "could" be choosing to fly that out right crushes him.

12. Uninformed opinion here...but Nathan Eide's winning list...won because of his immense skill first, PS10 Bomblet TLT Nym second, and Corn last. He loses if he brings Miranda or Dash since the PS10 advantage makes all the differenece at the 96 pt bid i think he had?

13. End of the day Corn is similar to Potensity. Kill "one big" thing in your opponents list. And then just run away until time and tears.

14. This was in my brain. Now its not. Forget Regen. Moar GREENS!!!

Corran is one of the most difficult ships to fly because he is half your list on 5hp. This is why you see him get second at Worlds along with Miranda and the ship that becomes meta is Miranda. Then he wins Nationals and will still probably not see much use because he is difficult to fly and not easy mode.

With PTL and no adv sensors he can die easily from a single block. With adv sensors, it is the SLOW game for him and lots of patience as his actions will be to maneuver and your dice will be naked or single modded.

Just practice. I would say start with adv sensors, less likely you will get blocked and die, and there are many wingmen now to help him out in the 50pt range.

Well, I flew Corran for the first time tonight... Flew him with Dash against an imperial squad of Echo, DoubleEdge and Major Stridan.

Found it really hard not to get outflanked by the phantom without leaving myself vulnerable to the other ships, so ended up turtling up most of the time, which severely restricted my damage output. I then engineered getting into short range against a heavily damaged DoubleEdge, wasn't brave and went for defence again, and blanked out on the attack - double-tapped and blanked out again. Really should have gone for the offensive actions rather than defensive... That left him vulnerable, and he died horribly...

Thankfully, all the time and effort spent taking down Corran allowed Dash to wander around wreaking havoc, so he destroyed the entire imperial fleet on his own!

@Darth-Meepy

How did you fit Dash with Corran on points? Best I can come up with is this.

Dash Rendar — YT-2400 36
Push the Limit 3
"Mangler" Cannon 4
Kanan Jarrus 3
Engine Upgrade 4
Outrider 5
Ship Total: 55
Corran Horn — E-Wing 35
Push the Limit 3
Advanced Sensors 3
R2-D2 4
Ship Total: 45

I flew;

Dash, VI, Outrider, HLC, Rey 51pts

Corran, PTL, Adv Sensors, R2D2, EU 49pts

I don't have Kanan yet, so decided against PTL/EU on Dash. Took Rey instead and started slow to collect focus, hoping that would make up for only having 1 action per turn later on

That's one thing that the Sheathipede (the Phantom 2) should make rather interesting - a ship like Corran (an unarguable arc-dodger ace straight out of the Soontir Fel & Vader school, despite the regen) might well really appreciate a cheap ship with co-ordinate lobbing free actions at it - and, for that matter, Cassian Andor sucking stress of him might be interesting, too.

Thoughts on putting VI on his and having the Phantom 2 follow him around? Right now he needs PtL to token stack, but maybe there's another way?
