Another Time
I have really enjoyed the game mechanically and thematically so far, but there's still one element that bothers me. The promos for the game play up the "mono no aware" element, in which a character's time in the story naturally fades and destiny moves on to others. When it's something like "Shinjo Tatsuo's time in the story has passed," it has a lot of impact. It loses a lot when it's "Naive Scholar's time in the story has passed." To which I say, make every character unique.
I understand how, in the old game, it was weird to have three Matsu Fumikos (or whoever) in play at the same time, but there's already a system for unique people that makes a lot of sense. Why not just use that? Works fine in Doomtown, too, having everyone be unique unless otherwise stated.
Clearly, that's probably not a change they can easily make now, even if they were so inclined. I do hope they give us chances to pick our favorite unnamed spud and "promote" them to experienced status, giving them a name in the process. Would make a great tournament prize.
Speaking from playing Unicorn:
More interaction with the first player token to make our 'Way' more viable for an already congested conflict deck.
I'd trade most of our card movement effects for really anything else. (Looking at you 4 cost unique and Outrider and Ide Messenger) OR, allow movement to work both ways to move in, or move out of a conflict.
Allow our stronghold to move Calvary in political conflicts as well.
Decrease the cost of our courtier characters or give them calvary. Altogether a decrease in cost of our characters across the board since we have a lopsided amount of (3) costs.
Our champion... I feel it would be too easy to overpower this character, but as she stands, I never pay her cost from a province. Perhaps make her the only champion to cost (4)
More discard character effects: Courtesy, sincerity, pride. I'm fairly certain we have NONE of these in our entire dynasty and conflict deck.
Some interaction with our honor pool, either preventing honor from being taken, or protecting ourselves from dishonor through gaijin means? Along with this, any character that would be able to honor themselves or others would be extremely welcome (Perhaps a new battle maiden)?
A card or character that can help negate unwanted effects and attachments. Unicorn feel like they just have to sit and take Any clan (Especially Scorpion's) nasty conflict cards and can do nothing about it.
I think going 2nd is too powerful. You get 1 extra fate turn 1 automatically, but you are also the first player who can gain fate from a ring on turn 2. I wonder if starting the game with 1 fate on every ring would smooth this out.

Apologies for the pointless pedantism, but pride isn't a discard character effect. Unicorn I don't believe has any keywords on their characters.
Also, Outrider is awesome, I don't know why you don't like her.

Right, I believe my point is that there is very little in our character's boxes that allow them to do something either in conflict, or after getting discarded. It's not that I don't like outrider, I'd just rather have more than movement.
