Really? Type "unicorn" into a google search and let me know about the pictures that pop up.

I get pictures of Unicorns. Should I be seeing MLP porn or something?
I got this picture:

I embrace the empowerment granted to me by cutesy cartoon designs and sparkles. Each image only makes me more powerful

Ditto.
Well that derailed quickly.

Though does accurately express what some Unicorn players think of changing it back to Kirin.
I would tweak the going-to-time procedures for readability. I might also tweak them substantively, as "finishing the round" can easily take 15+ minutes (yes, it can easily take much less than that, but it's the longest time that will define how long everyone has to wait).
Don't see a reason to change anything about the structure of the game itself at this point.
Seems like we've been dancing around the topic for long enough, so I'll just lay this out simply:
"Unicorn" is American slang for a single person who is willing to be the third person in a ménage à trois arranged by an otherwise committed couple.
Which is a very silly reason to change the Clan's name. Have you heard of Restroom Snow from Game of Thrones?
(my slang research about Unicorn also shown at least one person in the planet refering to it as "female orgasm")
Edited by WintersongI can understand people thinking Unicorn is an odd name for a fictional Asian setting when people traditionally think of a Western European style Unicorn. I was among many new players that thought the name was odd and didn't fit the setting. But eventually I learned that Unicorns exist in Asian Legends but, much like dragons, they are different than the western style.
Rant Below
As for the original topic, I'd toss out the dueling mechanic and change it to something else. I've said it several times before but I absolutely despise the idea that, as a Crane player, I may have to sacrifice honor for a chance to win a duel. Thematically this really bugs the **** out of me since they are supposed to be honorable and be among the best duelists. What little I've seen, it seems they will have a lot of difficulty wining duels against the more militaristic clans even if they, ugh, act dishonorably in the duel.
Crane was my favorite clan and they did a good job capturing the political side of them. But the dueling side of them feels very wrong. It would be like giving penalties to Crab when they defend or Scorpion when they dishonor someone.
I love the setting and plan to follow the fiction but I'm not sure if I will buy anything past the base set. I want to give the game a chance but really hate that my favorite aspect of my preferred clan is trash. Maybe future expansions will fix this but I'm not really interested in spending cash on the game hoping that it gets fixed some day. Especially when there are so many other games out there that give me what I want.
It doesn't help that this game is designed to be two player only since my gaming group rarely plays two player games. My second choice for changes would be making it friendlier for multiplayer groups.
The dueling mechanic does leave a lot to be desired.

Well there is that, but also, the LCG narrative is the first time (to my knowledge, anyway) where it is explicitly stated that "Unicorn Clan" was a name we adopted for ourselves while abroad, and not one given to us by the Crane upon our return which previous tellings implied to be the case. This establishes two important things. First, it can be inferred that the unicorn is a foreign beast, presumably one for which our ancestors developed an affinity. Second, it explains why our older mon lacks a horn: it does not represent a unicorn but a ki-rin, and remains the same as it did in ancient days despite that we no longer call ourselves the Ki-Rin Clan. If we look at the jewel-encrusted mon found in the new artwork, it depicts a horn whose color is out of place amid the rest of the design. I believe this is meant as the artist's nod (both in-universe and IRL) to the fact that we changed our name whilst remaining true to our origins as best we can. Over time we have added new things to our culture, but have always done so with the intent to best serve the role Hantei bestowed upon us.

The Clan of the Unicorn
With Shinjo lost to them and their forces in complete disarray, Otaku Fujiko and Iuchi Suasan considered their options. Only a single child of Shinjo remained. His name was Yonaru, and he wept for the loss of his mother and his siblings. Otaku bent on her knee before him and swore she would protect him until his mother returned to claim her place at the head of her Clan. Iuchi Suasan did the same, as did Ide Sunosa.
Yonaru looked at the three and nodded. In their minds, they heard his words, and they agreed. He looked at the remainder of his mother's followers and saw they were no longer what they once were. They were Rokugani no longer. They were something else. Perphaps even something stronger.
Yonaru declared that they would no longer carry the banner of the Ki-Rin, but their mon would be a creature that carried both the blood of the Rokugani and the blood of all they had encountered. The fire-steed that was once their namesake was no more. From that day foward, they would carry the banner of the Unicorn.

That is just 1st edition rpg stuff of the other time line.
I would tweak some of the costs especially for the neutral cards, especially wandering Ronin, I would put flavor text on every card with room for it, and I would make ties in does count as a lose for both sides for karmic strikes

Never heard that slang before. Even after having heard that possible definition, I don't know that it's that wildly common slang that should be a collective weirdness about the name Unicorn.
(And not what I thought the original poster's weirdness may have been referring to, since I don't know how that'd come up in an image search.)
Edited by RandomJCI don't see what the big deal is. Would you let some silly cultural perversion corrupt a definition that has been established for a really long time now?
