GAT-12 Skipray Blastboat

By Wondergecko, in X-Wing

Welp, it worked for the Starwing, so I'd love to see if there's some love for the noble Blastboat. Personally, this was always a favorite ship of mine -- a sturdy, hard-hitting assault craft with a good variety of weapons and a roomy cabin that actually makes sense for a picket ship.

It's a badass little ship, and in lore it was supposed to be occasionally classified as a small capital ship due to the output of its reactor. Game mechanic-wise, perhaps this could mean it gets energy tokens, like an epic ship. Anyways, who else is clamoring for this?

I'm just afraid that it has the potential to end up as another funcking insanely overpowered Scum ship (given that Karrde and Zann used them extensively).

Totally a fair concern. I wonder if maybe it's dual faction and the Imperial loadouts and Scum loadouts are different, so the ship fills a different role in each fleet. Or, it's just Imperial.

I keep hoping it'll pop up as a duel faction ship for Imps and Scum. It has some interesting capabilities and I could get Mara Jade and Talon Karrde as pilots!

On another note, these guys aren't exactly small. I looked it up and they are suppose to be about 25 meters long, which is roughly how long a U-Wing is with its wings forward. I've got the feeling the Blastboat would be a large base.

by far the ugliest E.U. ship. i'd really hope for the dunelizard, the Otanna, and a scum epic hardpoint platform like the star jewel or crusader first.

BLASTBOAT!

I think you missed the insane reload action.

Is it on Rebels? That is what makes the ship likely to appear in X-wing.

The Wave 12 scum ship I never heard of but from what people told me it is on Rebels.

The Kimo? Not from what I have seen.

It's from Galaxies, which is where a number of other X-Wing ships have come from (iirc, Decimator was also a Galaxies ship).

The Phantom II is from Rebels.

The Gunboat is from the old X-Wing PC games, which is where a lot of original inspiration for this game came from.

okay well maybe there is hope for Blastboat from Forces of Corruption to come into X-wing.

After all Armada has both Assault Frigate Mk.II and MC-30 frigates.

Sweet banthar poodoo what the **** is that thing?
Its like a crudely cut wedge with a cockpit.

Hey, I'd love to see the Crusader! Wouldn't mind the Otanna, even though it's the end result of a mediocrely played game of 'rearrange the Falcon bits'.

But, like:

  • Logical, functional gunship design with well-organized fields of fire
  • Evokes Incom aesthetic with nose cone and classic Star Wars swing-wing
  • Forward swept wing and canards reminiscent of real-life X-29
  • Good, proportional arrangement of negative spaces in profile views (cut-outs between wings)

And now for:

  • Big glass target on top
  • Like, a melted guitar pick? A long Dorito? A shark tooth with hair on it?
  • No detail or features for scale.
  • Literal gunports with no fields of fire. Because the sail barge had ports that opened, I guess this does too. Because the defining characteristic of a Hutt isn't trashy opulence, but rather flappy ports to peek out of. Or because pirates sailed ships with gunports at one point on Earth? I don't even know, man.
  • Vanes. Because sail barge.
  • Sticks that supposedly hold maneuvering thrusters. Which is literally the dumbest place to place a maneuvering thruster, because the amount of force exerted on those long sticks would be nuts.
  • A droopy nose that couldn't hold any actual functional equipment.

The C-ROC took some bits of Hutt aesthetic and bolted them onto a functional design. Lando's yacht also incorporates some bits of that styling while staying functional. That thing above is just an ill-conceived mess.

As for worst/ugliest EU ships... the worst is already over:

I'd most likely but two blastboats if they release it. I'll buy two gunboats - not out of any sort of love for the ship but just because it's a small base Imperial ship that's not a TIE variant.

Again, not sure these guys would be small base. My research has turned up a length of 25 meters, which is a hair longer than a u-wing with its wings in the foreword position.

I like it. Would have preferred the Skipray to the Aggressor as the Imperials turret carrier.

I mean, comparing the K-wing, U-wing, Misthunter, IG-2000 and ARC-170, I suspect the size will be whatever FFG decides is best for balance, heh. It's right in that middlezone that could go either way. I think I would prefer a large for fluff's sake.

Based on the numbers I'm seeing (admittedly they could be changed if Disney feels like it), the Blastboat is firmly in the big based camp as it is longer than all of the ships you mentioned, as well as JumpMasters, Yt-24's, and Lambda shuttles.

From Star Wars Galaxies: TIE Aggressor, Decimator, Kihraxz, Scyk, Kimogila

From older games: Skipray (X-Wing: Alliance), Scurrg (Star Wars: Starfighter), Z-95, TIE Defender, Assault Gunboat (X-Wing and/or TIE Fighter), YT-2400 (Shadows of the Empire), TIE Phantom (Rebel Assault II), TIE Hunter (Rogue Squadron III), TIE Punisher (a renamed TIE Interdictor, from Galactic Battlegrounds), HWK (Dark Forces)

It's fixed guns are ion cannons, so I found the solution to make them cannon upgrades and give the 360] attack as primary. (see my custom card)

So it wouldn't be a ship with turret, but with cannon (unless FFG added the ion effect to a title).

Maybe another mobile arc canidate? Ah, and that way it could have a pilot ability or upgrade card that allows the cannon to be fired out the mobile arc.

The Skipray would be great for an "All Dual-Faction" wave:

Skipray Blastboat - Scum/Imperial (the loadouts for each would need to feel pretty different)

V-Wing - Imperial/Rebel (with all-new "Advanced Astromechs" for Imps)

SoroSuub Luxury Yacht 3000 - Rebel/Scum (good place for Scum versions of both Han and Lando?)

Pure wish-list stuff, but we've seen the yacht on Clone Wars and I think it's been a background ship in Rebels too (I still wish Phoenix Squardron had used V-wings, but that's a bit OT)

Personally, I think the Blastboat has a great chance of showing up, because only having one option for turrets in the Imperial faction is something that I'm sure the game designers consider limiting! Just like I'm guessing they're working on another dual-crew scum ship for Jabba.

Plus, then we can get a "Boat Aces" expansion with more pilots and awesome upgrades for both the Blastboat and the Gunboat!

thats a hideously bad render of the Star Jewel, lol. and the star jewel is also bigger than a CR-90. its shape isnt fighter oriented because its a luxury command carrier with big guns.

honestly what i hate about the skipray is its supid engine... like its literally a single tube. how would it even turn? well to each their own. eventually they'll make it and you can fly your fav. hopefully by then I'll have my **** dunelizards
