Runewars minatures community...

Runewars is definately going to die especially in my area anyway.

My group got into Runewars because they wanted a miniatures system that didnt have the problems that Xwing, Armada and IA have but had the good bits from them. Hence Runewars.

Now that Legion is coming, they get that and its also Star Wars.

That's a shame. But in all honesty, Runewars probably only should have ever appealed to people who are interested in ranked fantasy combat. I'm sure there were people considering it fill some gap in their gaming experience, but if they weren't interested in fantasy and/or ranked combat, it was never really going to work. It was always going to be a temporary bandaid, as inevitably new games will come to fill that void. I mean I already know people leaving for the GoT ranked fantasy combat game, so I'd say Runewars is even more niche (magical fantasy vs medieval + some beasts).

Out of curiosity, how many Age of Sigmar novels and/or Battletome lore sections have you read?

I've read all the realmgate stuff, and probably only about half of the battletome lore. My biggest issue with the literature is the lack of any humanistic element. There's very little in any of it to actually make you care. It'd be like 40K without the Imperial Guard, or Star Wars without the Rebel infantry. There's never any rags to riches or relatable content. Which is disappointing. I'm sure some people enjoy reading about a bunch of super-hero level stuff battling it out in a realm of amorphous geography, but I always liked the darker, grittier side of fighting Skaven in the gutter, or taking on a pack of beast-men at some fein idol far into the wilderness. The massive battles or heroic duels only last so long. I mean maybe when the human faction gets introduced things will get more interesting. But there's definitely a lack of "Gotrek and Felix" type literature in the world.

It's honestly one of the reasons I'm hoping SWL has generic commanders to customize. I really don't want Luke and Darth Vader to become the focal point of every mission. "Rebel forces have been stealing groceries from our local Imperial owned Jawas-R-Us... SEND VADER!"

Did you have to mention Gotrek and Felix? So much good memories and the Darkblade books and some other books, ah those were the days now all of them are dead sadly.

I myself haven't read any AoS books though I will get the Disciples of Tzeentch Battletome soon and probably the Kharadron one later on. But I have read that wanting the Free People or however the humans are called in AoS to get a Battletome and models in quite some forums.

Haha. Sorry. That series was just what originally got me into tabletop gaming. I remember reading the books as a kid and saying "wait, there's a game for this!?!?". The new AoS novels just don't have that grab. It's hard to explain, but it's like the books are written to sell the game, rather than being written to be a book, which just so happens to be about this gaming world. I really like some black library authors, even some that have written the AoS books, and you compare it to their other work, and the fact that they're being asked to write something about it rather than wanting to write something about it really shows through.

And yeah, Free People. Getting more stories written from their perspective can only help the universe IMO (especially if characters from the book make it to the tabletop). It was always the humans accompanying the Space Marines in the Horus Heresy books that gave the best perspective on the evolution of events. AoS fiction is just lacking that at the moment.

The awesome thing about SWL is the fact that there's a TON of novels written as novels already out there in existence. It'd be easy to pick up any book and reenact the events on the tabletop, assuming FFG releases a staggering range of models, haha.

Interestingly enough, although I'm a big Star Wars fan and have seen all the movies, own or owned quite a bunch of video games, action figures, Lego, Micro Machines, the X Wing game, I only have two books, one filled with short stories and one from the X-Wing series.

What I liked about the Black Library books is that the expanded the universe, some not all of them of course had description of stuff (cities, normal life...) that wasn't mentioned in the army books because it didn't belong in them and of course it's all ways a good inspiration to read about battles and characters.

Not really speculation. Each command unit even has special cards that even allow a single specific commander to function entirely differently from one game to the next.

Are you sure about that?

Seems like each specific commander has one set of command cards that differentiate them from other commanders, not multiple sets to change how they play.

I think what they're trying to get at is, you dont automatically get to bring all command cards for commander. You can only have 2 of the same pip card, so if all lukes command cards are 2 pip, you can essentially only use 2/3 at a time.

The end of the team Covenant demo the Creator specifically shows different cards available to the specific command units. Each commander had their own decks. I would have to rewatch for specifics on how many they came with in the core set. I would imagine in the future, we might even see different sculpts of various command units that would add more cards to the command units deck pools as well. For example, Princess leia VS General Leia. Two sculpt opportunities minimum for FFG, meaning more money for them, and more cards in the units pool.

I've seen it.

He shows three cards for each commander.

I don't know where people are getting this concept of "commander decks" from. All I've seen are hands. I don't think there are as many command cards, or as much randomization to them, as people are wildly speculating. Maybe the nomenclature crossover with Imperial Assault has them confused.

If there were decks of command cards, they probably would have mentioned it. After all they went way out of their way to mention all the other features not demonstrated, including the battle cards.

I may have totally misunderstood, i would have to rewatch, but i thought not all of the cards could be played in a single match, so it was more of a "deck" than a "hand" but i know no more than anyone else. Regardless i would expect more command cards to be added to the "hand" as they release alternate sculpts for specific command units. They would be crazy not too. Heck even new guys on the block like Guild Ball etc, make a ton of alternate sculpts for their miniatures game.

I'm just saying that's all speculation, is all.

You may well be right, but I've been over all the available info and I haven't seen anything suggesting it outside of wishful thinking.

Like you, I look forward to getting more information on this, since I think the command card system is the most interesting mechanic they're bringing to the table here.

You make a deck of 7 command cards. I think there's only 6 rounds?

They do mention 7 cards. So if you have two commanders you pick 7 out of available 10 cards to make your deck.

unless I misunderstood

Im not sure the accuracy of the volume of cards here, but the concept is similar to my thoughts and understanding of it.

I feel sorry for Legion players. Runewars will have this blip of a miniatures game killed within a year of its release.
