My group got into Runewars because they wanted a miniatures system that didnt have the problems that Xwing, Armada and IA have but had the good bits from them. Hence Runewars.
Now that Legion is coming, they get that and its also Star Wars.
That's a shame. But in all honesty, Runewars probably only should have ever appealed to people who are interested in ranked fantasy combat. I'm sure there were people considering it fill some gap in their gaming experience, but if they weren't interested in fantasy and/or ranked combat, it was never really going to work. It was always going to be a temporary bandaid, as inevitably new games will come to fill that void. I mean I already know people leaving for the GoT ranked fantasy combat game, so I'd say Runewars is even more niche (magical fantasy vs medieval + some beasts).

I've read all the realmgate stuff, and probably only about half of the battletome lore. My biggest issue with the literature is the lack of any humanistic element. There's very little in any of it to actually make you care. It'd be like 40K without the Imperial Guard, or Star Wars without the Rebel infantry. There's never any rags to riches or relatable content. Which is disappointing. I'm sure some people enjoy reading about a bunch of super-hero level stuff battling it out in a realm of amorphous geography, but I always liked the darker, grittier side of fighting Skaven in the gutter, or taking on a pack of beast-men at some fein idol far into the wilderness. The massive battles or heroic duels only last so long. I mean maybe when the human faction gets introduced things will get more interesting. But there's definitely a lack of "Gotrek and Felix" type literature in the world.
It's honestly one of the reasons I'm hoping SWL has generic commanders to customize. I really don't want Luke and Darth Vader to become the focal point of every mission. "Rebel forces have been stealing groceries from our local Imperial owned Jawas-R-Us... SEND VADER!"
