Intensity-wing

By tsondaboy, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Posted in the main forum and reposing here as suggested.

My take in theorizing about a squad that has potential to perform great given the recent upgrade cards.
As the name suggest its 4 A-wing with intensity and deadeye.

Green Squadron Pilot + Crack Shot + Proton Rockets + Intensity + Guidance Chips

Green Squadron Pilot + Deadeye + Cruise Missiles + Intensity + Guidance Chips

Setup with the procket wings to take the lead and cruise wings in the back.
Reveal a 5 speed maneuver and boost to adjust bearing and range a bit further and take a focus token from intensity.
In the current 2 ship meta, wait for what comes in front of you and see it melt. :D

That's 8 points spent on 4 Intensity. You are moving first almost certainly against a 2 ship list they'll out PS your PS3 guys.

Intensity maybe comes into play for the prockets if you need that boost to get into Range 1; but you don't know that as you moved first with them maybe it gets you range 1 maybe you moved to close and now its a bump when the enemy moves. For the cruise missile ships though, I don't see why that would be better than simply doing a focus action. You can fire those Range 2-3 so moving closer isn't necessary unless you think you are going to charge in fast and thats not going to be enough to squeak into R3 to shoot.

This is 98 points. Alternatively change out one Cruise Missile for an assault missile in case you come against Biggs. (When Harpoon Missiles come out you could also have 2x with that and 2 with cruise; shoot the harpoons first then the cruise missiles to immediately trigger the splash damage.

A major benefit from the top list is that you can use one of the pockets guy as your blocker if indeed they do the mistake to bump on you.
I don't know if you had the chance to try the cruise missiles yet, but staying at r2-3 without a blocker ahead is a tricky task, I have been trying them the past few weeks.
Thus, the two A-wing in the front have pockets, it really forces your opponent to consider his approach path carefully. If he goes too fast he risk getting blocked if too slow get a 4 missile A.
I was never sold on the assault missiles and I am definitely not sold on the harpoon either. Additionally, there is no benefit in having points unspent in a low PS squad.

Harpoons are definitely a better choice than assault missiles simply because they still do their job of being a missile effectively (4 dice secondary weapon with target lock reroll) but also have a splash damage effect if one is beneficial (whilst assault missiles are all about the splash damage to the point of being technically worse than just a focused 3-dice attack).

However, I wouldn't anticipate them doing too much in this squad , because to reliably achieve much with them you need to be able to set the harpoon off with an attack, which generally means a 3-dice primary guidance chip missile, a proton torpedo, a mangler cannon, or any one of a number of methods which are almost universally unavailable to a-wings....

I ve already argued in another thread than since the Harpoon effect does not discriminate friend from foe, I would not even bother fixing it. I would just treat the ship as being equipped with dead mans switch. ;)
