The state of bomber oriented fleets in Armada

By Hawkwing, in Star Wars: Armada

My brother and I are currently trying to reimagine viable bomber oriented fleets for both factions. Although we have come up with a number of ideas, there are a few changes in the recent waves that may hinder the effectiveness of bombers. We'd appreciate any input, especially player experience with playing and fighting against these fleets, as my own time for testing these things is quite limited at the time being.

Our point of departure for these fleets is that in order to have an 'effective' bombering fleet, a carrier is obviously required. Luckily, there various options for both factions. Then, a proper combination of bombers and non-bombers is required, meaning that intel is critical to include and perhaps also squadrons that may engage enemy fighters (1-2 Escort squadrons). Lastly, a secondary threat is also needed so that the fleet can win even if the bombers are tied up by the enemy (this typically includes an Admonition with Ordnance Experts and Assault Proton Torpedoes in my case). Needless to say, a couple of flotillas are always present to supply tokens via Comms Net and rerolls through Bomber Command Center.

Now, the changes that have occurred can be reasonably summarised with one word: Sloane. Sloane dominated the last tournament that we attended. These lists, in our context, typically include a significant air superiority force that is capable of swiftly removing intel from the enemy, thus tying potential threats to capital ships up and nullifying that threat.

Therefore, we continue ponder whether 'old-fashioned' bomber lists can effectively prevail in a fighter heavy environment and how to adequately address the threat that fighters currently pose to bomber lists.

Well, rebel B-wings with BCC and Toryn with some X-wings for escort and Jan Ors are still pretty hurtful, only problem is speed

I don't think empire has been much affected, despite the Rhymer change, close range is still amazingly better than distance 1, so Vader and Tempest, add a Dengar and you have bomber escorts with counter

That's my view, I'm not that experienced as a player, mostly only theory crafting

The issue with speed can luckily be managed by means of Fighter Coordination Team and/or All Fighters, Follow Me! though that needs to be counted in the cost of the B-Wings.

How many B-Wings would you consider required for getting adequate value out of them? And would that plan include Yavaris?

Theory craftin is fine! That's also the stage we're at - though we've had a couple of games trying out the theorising :)

Yavaris definitely adds to the destruction

I'm not really a rebel player, but I'd pick Ten Numb because it's a great AA effect, personally I'd take Keyan because double black rocks, 2 B-wings, Jan, 2 X-wing and Norra for the shield shreding

RLBs also can work well with B-wings, only problem is getting close enough

I have seem 130 points of y wings clean up fleets no problem.

Add flight controllers and they make decent fighters also. Yes they have heavy, but your not interested in fighting fighters. Small packs of 3 - 4 make it difficult to lock them all down.

I don't mind Lancers or yt2400 also

The best bomber squadron I have played against had Luke, two regular x-wings, Keyen, two regular Bwings, Nym, Jan, Yavaris, Gallant Haven, BCC and Torrin Farr.
