Saturday's Tournament Finals - Scorpion vs Crane

He conceded out of courtesy, we could have played it out but the challenge where we exchanged a bunch of cards really depleted his hand and he didn't have a board to fall back on.

I got very lucky, he didn't. We both played to our outs with few mistakes and I just had more gas.

Speaking of gas - this is why I bid 5 turn 1, I knew I needed gas to protect Hotaru and hopefully keep her honored. The only way I lose there is by Hotaru staying dishonored.

Despite how short it was it was a great game strategically for the one core format and I just got a better draw in both hand and provinces. Flip the script and I'd have lost too - Matt played to his only outs beautifully.

Congradulations Reiga (I thought you were Lion Clan?).

Since this format is new, I'm wondering if you or anyone can confirm: Is this the last of the organized play for Gencon's L5R LCG? Is there any other official competition?

Also, if this is the last event, do we know about the attached story prize (if any)?

Thx.

This is the last non casual event, yes. Tomorrow is an unofficial event. The story prize intro has already been posted. I don't know what else they have planned.

Lion mon? What Lion mon? ;)

Must have been someone else. :)

Per my understanding, Kiku Matsuri decided the Hatamoto and the Story result to Ban/Not Ban Meishodo. The Friday tournament and Saturday morning/early afternoon finish did not have an attached story element to it (again, AFAIK). If anyone knows otherwise, please feel free to correct this.

Would be great if it was the new Emerald Champion appointment...

It should totally be Crane again!

As for story prizes, you are correct in that only Thursday has an official story to it but I hope they incorporate some moments from the top games into it. There were some epic moments I was a part of and saw/overheard others be a part of too.

OMK, Congratulations Reiga!

Any videos of any of the games floating around? I thought I saw someone mention videos. Links please and thank you.

Also Crane-gratulations to the winner.

Going to be interesting seeing the story effects of the splash clans, if any.

First of all, a huge gratz for your victory!

I agree with all the points of view, including yours as the most qualified of all, that the chance to win the game was very small for your rival at that point.

Only that being the finals of the first tournament weekend of the game, I would have played to the last breath. I say this with the deepest respect for a player that earned a place in the finals, probably after a whole lot f hours of gameplay and probably after playing kiku matsuri the day before.

It is quite easy to say this from my chair the day after, but probably one cance he had was to rely on void ring to let Hotaru pass away. Probably the best chance to do that was letting your first attack on turn 2 to go unopposed and then counterattacking on the void ring.

After trying to block your attack, did he have another try to attack on the void ring, waiting maybe for a mistake from your side?

Maybe I am missing something. That is quite possible indeed.

Anyway, good game. Your decision on bidding 5 on the first turn was bold and wise. Other decissions you make also deserve you the win.

Again, congratulations. And thank you for sharing your view on it.

Since he assassinated my Keeper he really needed to win that challenge. After I won it I would have TWO more Keepers back in play, one of them honored (due to Hotaru's trigger being after claiming the ring). That's what was back breaking.

All he had left that turn was Miya Mystic to defend against the Challenger and both Keepers along with MIL favor - a minimum of 8 MIL might to 1.

It was very likely to be a two break turn and both the Keepers and Challenger have balanced stats so I didn't care too much if they hit Rally, EF, Shameful Display, or Pilgrimage. The only issue would have been Entrenched Position with an Adept of Shadows in hand (he had 2 fate) and even then I'd have won the challenge and ring but MAYBE not broken (I believe I still had a Banzai! and/or Katana in hand). I probably would have taken void for no effect just to deny the sneak attack on Hotaru.

TL;DR: Just because it was a bad draw that did him in, doesn't mean either player didn't fully deserve to get to the finals ;)

Exactly! Just trying to show the lines of play we both saw for those wondering about the concession.

Tournament was super fun and I met a bunch of great people! This community is amazing and I look forward to many more events!

I am glad to see that the respect towards opponents of the old AEG days has persisted. I hope each match began with a bow and ended with a bow, as well.

Can't say what took place during the Friday tournament, but at least for all my games in the Kiku Matsuri we started with introductions and a friendly handshake, and we finished with congratulations and a friendly handshake. Not quite bowing, but still modern courtesies were observed without fail.

Wish my wife and I could have played in the tournaments this year. Maybe next time around!

*offers limp handshake to the Crane* =3
