Sense - Basic power

By Tegman, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hi guys, I'm wondering if any of you can help me out.

It states in the basic power of Sense that: The user may spend a force point to sense all living things within short range (more if range upgrades are bought) of himself (including animals and sentient beings).

What I wonder is, does the force user know if a creature is sentient or an animal or does he only get to know how many living creatures that are within range?

Sincerely, Tegman

They sense all living things, not just the number of living things, so my impression is that they have a general idea of where those livings things are in relation to them. It isn't clear just how much info you get beyond that but I'd think it reasonable to at least have some impression of the general size/shape.

It works pretty much as it says, in that you pick up living beings, but you don't get any other details.

So for example, using the Sense basic power in the middle of a jungle is just going to result in you being overwhelmed with the sheer volume of living things, but won't be able to differentiate between a bunch of smaller pests that aren't much of a threat or the local predator that's ready to pounce upon the party from surprise.

However, using it in an abandoned apartment building in the bowels of a major city means that the PC isn't going to be overwhelmed, but they won't automatically be able to differentiate between a group of local homeless squatters or a group of street thugs looking to start a rumble with the party.

Now, as the GM you can allow the PC to also make a Perception (or maybe even Vigilance) check as part of the Sense power check as a houserule to allow the PC to be able to pick out specific details, probably with an Average difficulty, such as discerning which living beings they've sensed are sentient. Just be leery about letting them pick out things like "hostile intent" as part of sensing living beings, since that sort of thing falls under Sense's other basic function.

This is how I've used it, along with a couple others such as that sense of "being watched", and sensing "stronger blips" as potentially Force sensitive.

Thanks guys, using Perception is a good idea and I¨'ll use that :)

And you wouldn't even know whether that hostile intent was directed at you or no, unless you used the "sense surface thoughts" upgrade.
