As an absolute noob in painting miniatures, i would wish that Star Wars Legion is prepainted like X-Wing.
I hate to play games with grey figures like Imperial Assault, which i selled because of that.
Its the reason why i wont buy this game ;(

I used to feel this way, but now I'm on the exact opposite end. Nearly all my time with miniatures is in painting not playing. You should try it out, maybe grab one of the "learn to paint" sets from that certain UK company that comes with a couple models and paints for cheap. It is amazing what a base coat, wash, and a layer paint can do. Give it a try.
Having the preprinted miniatures is my second favorite part second only to the gameplay of X-Wing. Withe all the other commitments I find it hard to play the games and rather spend my time playing. Too bad but I'm such a Star Wars fan I'll probably be in but it will depend on gameplay.
Wired4War makes a strong point. Painting is not as daunting as it seems and can be very enjoyable because it relies on learning fairly easy skills and techniques rather than having any kind of artistic talent.

Make them blue with yellow stripe across their helmet and come up with some backstory for how that squad cut its teeth on a water world. It sounds cheesy, but it is what really makes a miniature game a full "hobby" other than just a "game".
I tried, and failed. Besides, i did not enjoy it 
its not mine.

Painting is far superior to prepainted. Prepainted usually look like tirds. Patience and practice are all you need. And there are a lot of tricks to paint mass troops quickly.
Pre-Painted or nothing. I mean runewars is a no go the least they could do is pre-paint these. It's for the children.
As interesting as this game looks, unpainted it is a pass for me. I have missed out on many great table-top games because of the time investment and skill required. I lack both. I will, however visit this site ocassionally once the painted sets get posted. I will admire what those of you that have the time and enjoy the hobby can come up with.
I was encouraged by friends to paint my IA minis, and I hadn't painted in 20 years (and was awful back then!)
I looked up Sorastro's tutorials on Youtube - they're easy to follow, will teach you techniques you may not know/have heard of and I've found my painting is about 100 times better than when I tried before!
I understand it's not for everyone though as painting a lot of minis will take a lot of time.

Edit: I will also add that Sorastro's tutorials are focussed on single figures mostly - so when it comes time to paint Lando, you look up that video, watch it to take note of what you'll need, then try it yourself while following along with the video. He's already started with how to paint Legion figures, so there's not going to be any waiting for a video if you buy the game.
Edited by quantumsheepI am pretty good at painting, but even I would pay for pre-painted. No reason they can't do it. They do it for Arkham Horror, even though there are unpainted miniatures in Mansions of Madness.
Sorastro has stated on his Patreon post that he'll be doing a set of videos to cover all the figures in the core set for SW:L. They'll expand on some of the ones that are out now - so we probably won't get a super-detailed video on how to AGAIN paint Stormtroopers. Personally, i really enjoy it and spend a lot of time painting. The patience you put into it is rewarded in a quality figure you're proud of on the table.

Fair point.
But I personally believe unpainted minis work best for games that aren't tied to big name franchises (like RuneWars and Warhammer)
With a game based in the Star Wars universe, there’s already a clear set of themes and aesthetics that fans have fallen in love with.
And miniature wargaming is all about immersion. I mean, I’m sure you could paint your stormtroopers purple with yellow stars but how many people are really going to deviate from the films?
How many people are going to paint Darth freakin’ Vader green?

In all seriousness, you can still paint himas he appears in black but painting minis is more than just choosing black or green. It's about adding depth of color and shading and light effects. We could both paint Vader wearing his usual black digs and our minis could still be very different.

Yeah at 90$ use for a core set, they better be pre painted... Never got into Warhammer because you spend more time assembling/painting than playing...

To me being unpainted sucks. However I started some IA stuff and it's fairly easy to do, it's the time commitment that's the problem.
But the important thing to me is game play. If that's great then I'll paint. What I can. Slowly but surely.
Seriously, it will hike the price point up big time if they are pre-painted and they'll be painted terribly (Flashback to Star Wars Miniatures <shudder>). If you have painting skill beyond a 4 year old (that's to say no skill at all) then you'll produce better stuff than what any company that pre-paints infantry will look like.
As another note, when it comes to mini wargaming, the hobby aspect is actually what half of the community buys in for. This game is pretty much FFG's opposition to 40k. That being the case, they are going to follow suit with unpainted minis because paint is a pain to strip off of those figures and A LOT of people (as some have even voiced in this thread) are in it for the hobby and not so much the game.
That's just what the wargaming industry is: 1-part game/ 1-part hobby. And again, I'm pretty sure everyone here can paint better than the old Star Wars Minis game......

Yikes, I dont wanna insult anyone but if those are prepainted I would have prefered unpainted anytime! 
For anyone that feel painting is daunting, or that have tried it but simply didnt enjoy it, I just want to point out that there are VERY quick ways to produce at least something better then the above and it wont take much time at all. You basically slab on 2-3 different colors as base (white and black for stormtroopers) then dip the miniature in a "wash" and let it dry. From distance your table will look awesome midgame and I bet you can do an entire army in an evening or two.
The big risk with this though is that you will start to "just tidy up this area a bit" and then "maybe add a little red to this area" and before you know it you aint got time to play since your painting
But seriously, you can quickly paint up an army if youre happy with just getting some color on them.
Back in the day I had painting my Orks down to a science - if I had them preassembled and primed, I could polish off one decent-looking Boy in 32 minutes flat. And even at that rate, it took me dozens and dozens of hours to paint up my army. Luckily I was a fifteen year old who could safely neglect his homework and spend four hours a night hunched over a desk painting.
These days, I could not possibly muster up that kind of time investment. The Legion models won't be prepainted, and that's a shame, because it precludes me from playing right out of the gate. I understand the hobby argument, but prepainted X-wing ships have never stopped an enthusiast from painting up their squad. Heck, I even broke out my brushes to paint up a Poe Dameron X-wing before the official one was released. A lick of primer takes care of the preexisting paint job no worries.
It looks like a cool game with a great system, though. So much of the clunk that made up the bulk of a game of 40k seems to have been circumvented, which is great.

You must not play very often then. Or at all. Anyone who's into WH40k that I know paints quickly, gets their figures to the table and they play non-stop.
I love how you guys that can paint think it's so simple that anyone beyond 4 years old can do it. It's simple to you because you ALREADY have the skill set, time, and patience to paint them.
For the majority of regular people who want to play the game and have their product look nice, they don't know the first thing about painting. I watched Sorastro's tutorial (apologies if I I misspelled his name) and it's not that simple. Sure, he breaks into down into steps that you can mimic but I'm guaranteeing that a non artistic person is not going to reproduce any where near the quality that he did just by following his video. It takes a long time and a lot of practice to do that. He's able to do it in simple steps because he's already an artistic inclined person if not a painter already.
It takes experience, an eye for detail and how colors interact and a steady hand from practice to achieve those same results. You guys who can already do it take for granted your own abilities and the average person off the streets ability to reproduce a similar result.

Stormtrooper: Spray with white primer, paint blaster rifle black, hit up the figure with Citadel Nuln Oil, touch up white. Done. About 15 minutes total time (excluding drying)
