Scale has completely thrown me off

By Thrindal, in Star Wars: Legion

I was expecting more large vehicles and much smaller squads. I am not saying the scale is bad but it isn't at all what I would have expected. I just can't see an AT-AT at this scale. I was hoping to recreate the battle of Hoth or Scariff but at this scale it looks like much smaller skirmishes are what is intended.

I am also a little disappointed in the Core set price. Anything over $50 to me creates a significant barrier to entry.

Is it the same scale as Imperial Assault?

I'm sure this is a good $89 box. Seems to be the going rate on starters.

Since you can't see an AT-AT near this scale, allow me to aid you :P

what is included in that box for 89?

Here's from the announcement: " With thirty-three unpainted and easily assembled miniatures, and all the cards, movement tools, tokens, and terrain that you need for battle, the Star Wars : Legion Core Set is the perfect way to bring Star Wars battles to your tabletop. "

(For reference, that's one mini less than IA's core box, so pretty equivalent, for whatever that's worth.)

Scale is a little bigger than Imperial Assault, enough to put me off the game unfortunately as already have large IA collection.

I'll say it. the scale is bad. Star wars battles don't happen at this scale. it has either been large armies with many vehicles and aircraft in support or a handful of specialists doing a spec ops jobs, Not this.

Nope. The new models are just large enough so they look bad side by side with IA stuff.

I dunno, the difference does not look that far off to me. I hear that the IA Luke is a bit on the small side compared to other IA miniatures anyway, but I don't own any to confirm that.

I'd say just shrug and go with it.

Yeah, if you google "luke imperial assault," there's a comparison shot with him, Han, and Chewie, and one with him next to a Stormtrooper. He's smallish. The two different Lukes don't look right, but on the table, maybe most of the miniatures will mix. Maybe they won't, but that would be a shame.

They totally failed I think. If they did a ground assault game but at a smaller scale that could be compatible with x-wing this thing would sell like hotcakes. Instead they release a game that's barely different than IA so it's not compatible there, too large for X-Wing, and comes unpainted, oh and it costs $89...

Yeah I was surprised at the scale not that it is a bad game to game at but with Imperial Assault its kinda like why? Why not really make this its own by making it more with the large ground armies where IA can take the unit level in its own direction.

makes you think... with the scale similar to IA... what is going on with IA?

IA is a very different game based on the info we have... but at the same time it may look very similar to more casual players who just want to play star wars. I think this will be for more "hard core gamers" while IA maybe for more RPG'er's and you may see skirimish see a big drop... I hope not on all accounts.

Very bad choice for the scale .

Star Wars Legions : that sounds large armies for me, like a 15mm game, flames of war fr example. I'm a bit disappointed. Imperial Assault is too similar, I know that the gameplay and rules will be different, but not so far. You have IA? Do you really think you'll invest in this new game? You can already build your skirmish battles in IA...

Looks like we are talking about two things:

(1) scale of the figures

(2) scale of the game

Hard to imagine how people can be surprised in terms of (1) if you have been paying attention to FFG. As to cross-compatability of IA figs, what's really to stop you if you're not playing in FFG-sanctioned events? The scale difference is pretty tiny.

As for (2), the major ground battles of the Original Trilogy were Hoth and Endor. Legion seems completely in line with Endor. Hoth is a bit bigger but after all, represents the entire Rebel Alliance fighting to escape the Empire. The Battle of Hoth is therefore much more the exception than the rule.

Here is a Luke comparison:

The IA base is 1 inch. By measuring the bases from the linked image, the Legion base is approximately 1.125 inches (1 1/8").

So the Legion figures are 12% larger, if I did my maths correctly.

Where did that image come from by the way? The Legion Luke looks exactly like the one Sorastro painted in his painting demo.

Agreed. Would have loved a smaller scale, so we get bigger battles with bigger stuff.

Sorastro posted the comparison image.

From Sorastro himself, in a roundabout way.

The IA luke looks like Sorastro's as well. It has the "mech-world" bases he likes to use on his heroes.

PLEASE don't forget. Rapid Prototypes are larger because thats what the molds are made from. As models cure in the molds they shrink. Its why some product lines have huge scale issues, or why the model on the website looks big and impressive, the model you get is 15% smaller.

These could all be made with a 3D printer at this time. We will have to wait to see what actual production models look like as these very well could not be them.

Sorastro said in the comments for the vid he had to use pre production clay prototypes because that's what he was supplied, and why it was orange.

EDIT: At this point everybody needs to calm the fudge down until you see a mixed painted squad with the base discrepancy sorted.
