Suggested reading?

By Rob5750, in Dark Heresy

If this has been brought up before then I apologize. I was wondering if there are any novels and/or short stories dealing with the Necrons and if so which ones would you guys suggest?

The Necron Codex would be my first stop. There are short stories from other races in the 40k universes perspective. It's a good read and presents great insight into the race.

The first novel in the Ultramarines Omnibus contains hints of the Necrons in the story, but it never comes right out and tells you who the enemies in the background are. It leaves things very mysterious, so I don't recommend reading that if you want details.

I really think that the Codex is your best option.

Ciaphas Cain deals with the necrons in the short story Echos of the Tomb and the novel Caves of Ice (both in the Ciaphas Cain: Hero of the Imperium Omnibus by Sandy Mitchell....great book by the way)

They don't go into much details on them, but gives a good feel as to being against them.

Although it isn't "necessary," I would suggest looking at Let the Galaxy Burn. You've got a lot of 40k fluff in there in general, including noncombat fluff, and you have the good short story "Deus ex Mechanicus" that is a good Necron-related story. Now, that story does not justify its purchase by itself but if you want to pick it up keep that story in mind.

H P Lovcraft as well dont forget.

They show up again in Cain's Last Stand.

And Xenology.

I'd point out the Necron codex appears to have been written by an Ad Mech fan boy with no access to primary sources. Trusting it or anything that agrees with it may be dubious. And Xenology's author was round the bend.

"Dark Apostle", written by Anthony Reynolds, has Necrons in it, albeit very late in the book. It also gives a detailed description of Word Bearer domination of an entire world. Nice read :D

While the Necrons are absent from the first sequel to Dark Apostle (entitled Dark Disciple), they return in Dark Creed, the second sequel. It's also got some interesting ideas concerning warp travel.
