How does cavalry work?

By CrowOfPyke, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

I know how cavalry used to work in the CCG, but apparently that has been changed drastically in the LCG. However, I can't find any definition for how cavalry works in the Learn To Play pdf or in the Rules Reference pdf. Can someone please enlighten me as to how cavalry works now in the LCG?

Thanks!

It doesn't have any specific rules unto itself, but rather it's a keyword that other cards reference/play off of.

The first rule of cavalry club is:

"You do not talk about cavalry club!"

Actually the first rule should probably be.

Get on TOP of the horse

not the other way round.??

Well that's one of the reasons why you "Don't talk about Cavalry Club!"

The Cavalry trait on its own doesn't do anything, but it serves as a trigger to allow other cards. The same way Bushi allows Rout, Cavalry allows Born in War.

That said - what the Unicorn get to represent the power of their Cavalry is a large amount of Move actions. Move actions are not common among the other clans but the Unicorn have many movement options. Where the old game allows you to "declare no infantry" so your opponent had to decide how to divide their defense, the new Unicorn can attack with 1 character, and mid-conflict potentially move other characters in. This might not seem impressive, but the fact that other clans do not have many options to add characters mid-conflict this gives the Unicorn a very unique advantage of flooding when their opponent is unable to resist. They have more fluidity in their ability to assign troops than any other clan hands-down.

That said - there is still the ever present mono no aware aspect of the game. Getting more than 3-4 characters on the field at once can be challenging, and you will need to master this element of the game to maximize on the Unicorn strategy. To sum the clans up in a word, the Lion are the "aggressive" military clan, the Crab are the "defensive" clan, and the Unicorn are the "strategic" clan. (sorry Toturi)

..... I'm beginning to think you Shadowlands types should stick to eating horses rather than trying to ride them???

I think perhaps the first rule should be:

Make sure at least one of your players sticks around for all 5 rounds of the tournament, so you get a friggin' Hatamoto.

No way!! I've clearly been missing out on drama by not keeping up with gencon news lol.

Well, apparently the tourney ran 2+ hours long, and due to its unwieldy size, there were some people who went through rounds without even having an opponent.

Still, kinda crazy that not one Unicorn player stuck around.

Oh? I was under the impression that for today's event, only players who went 5-0 became Hatamotos and that it was tomorrow's event that allowed top of clan to be Hatamotos.

This is correct. Top Unicorn player would have gotten a clan colored rose, but only going 5-0 could get you to hatamoto status. Best in clan only hit 4-1 for Unicorn.

Unicorn, making history in the L5R LCG since launch. :)

XD

The rose was awarded to top Unicorn and it was determined, but it was given before the rest of the Hatamotos/Top of Clan stuff since it was clear they weren't going on for that part.

When I asked the OP representative what would happen if a clan had no 5-0 finishers, their response could be accurately summarized as "LOL SOL".
