Roleplaying Gamemat???

By pholland, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Is it just me, or is this a particularly useless bit of kit, without much even in the way of 'wow' factor?

The art is average, the dice reminders aren't that useful. Initiative tracker- useful if you could say write on it and wipe clean or it came with tokens, that might make it useful. Difficulties... they are on the GM Screens. A space to roll your dice? Doesn't that take away the chance that dice might bump around and also the fact that you're probably playing on a level table surface anyway?

Maybe its just me, but this seems a rare mis-step when it comes to this game...

Well, with the Edge/Age/Destiny lines winding down in favor of NarDS, clearly they need to grab as much cash from us as they possibly can. Which is why we're seeing play mats and reproduced WEG game books.

Just kidding. The sky is not falling.

By the way, here's a picture of the thing:

I've been in situations where this could be useful.

It doesn't seem very useful for most home games, but I could see it being nice for convention one-shots.

Seems a little late to be getting it out there, but it certainly seems useful. Doesn't seem like it would eat into any of the writing effort or even printing. Just keeps artists busy and helps them keep SW related things on the shelves.

hmm, not my cup of tea, but I can definitely agree it would be useful for pickup games at the local game group, FLGS or convention.

moot point store is broken. Can't place my order.

After 2 hours of trying I was finally able to place the order.

Want? I think so. Need? Not so much. I'm polling my players. Im not sure if the init tracker will work fo me, and they all know the difficulty and range. Definitely good for con games and such. I don't know, maybe Santa will treat me at Christmas.

I like ideas like this, but not really this one. Each group of players needs different information at their fingertips, so I usually go for homemade versions of things like this. Actually, I may do just that...

I really dig the idea, but I won't be paying $12 in s/h to get it. Hopefully either the local shop or my usual internet shop will get copies.

I personally think its fantastic!

a good place to roll dice, a legend for all the different dice names (my group is very much a "GM knows all the rules" group)

an a visible initiative tracker and destiny pool.

shut up and take my money

Wouldn't this be better as a release for a card game or that Destiny dice game?

Now if that game mat had the deckplans of various ships which was being used by the PCs then I'd be interested in buying one or more if they covered several ships with one per mat (YT series or even a Gozanti depending on available mat space) but as shown?

Nope.

Now something to attach to the game master's screen than this might work better.

I like the concept, but... we have an initiative tracker that doesn't have an explicit way to use it, and the information along the sides is not the most useful. That said, I can't say what I'd do different out of hand, unless they came up with a visual system so you could easily represent ranges between characters.

Meh

After maps there's no room on my "that's not a coffee table, that's a dinner table for hobbits" coffee table. We roll dice on top of the maps, and only have the air gm screen open to the 2 critical hit tables in the corner of the coffee table nearest me.

Personally, I would have liked for there to be a bigger map space (of course if there is one). Otherwise, it's pretty good!

Its been really handy at my table. Aside from all the convenient quick references on it, it also cushions die rolls so that they are not ricocheting off the table as much lol.

And ya for teaching new players at pick up games at the FLGS it is priceless.

Yup, I've found the mat extremely useful.
