Taller bases and a different scale kinda kill the usefulness of IA in this game. Looks very similar to 40k style with units/squads.
Star Wars: Legion announced (by distributor)
Kind of looks like the end of IA skirmish.
**** this might finally be the game that gets me into minis, I was able to barely avoid RuneWars because of release timing and RL schedule, but by the time this come out I'll be long settled into my new career and probably in the dead of winter.. you clever devils FFG.
My wife is not going to be happy about this.
More, I need MMOOAARR!!!!
The guys over on the RuneWars forums did a great job of making custom terrain tutorials, perhaps thats something Sorastro will walk us through one day
Quite honestly, I like the grid based movement and snappiness that IA has. This Game looks cool and all, but I don't see myself getting it.
How does terrain work in this? Will FFG provide some kind of tiles?
Yeah, I've just been reading that article!
" With thirty-three unpainted and easily assembled miniatures, and all the cards, movement tools, tokens, and terrain that you need for battle, the Star Wars : Legion Core Set is the perfect way to bring Star Wars battles to your tabletop."
So it sounds like it comes with terrain, the question is just whether the terrain is actually 3D or just cardboard (like the obstacles in X-Wing and Armada).

Rune Wars has cardboard 2d terrain pieces in the box, but was shown off with full 3d model boards initially and I believe the rules allow for use of 3d terrain.
Coming from Warhammer 40k as my intro to wargaming, I would not want to go back to that style of gameplay. I think Legion will be to IA Skirmish as Armada is to X-Wing. You've got your large-scale battles and your skirmishs/dogfights. Different folks like different types of gameplay. There's something fantastic about knocking out several games under an hour a piece. I do not miss spending 2-3 hours per game in 3-4 game tournaments.
I don't fault anyone for enjoying Armada or being interested in Legion, but I don't see this as some finishing blow to IA Skirmish. There have been a handful of doom-and-gloom-ers trashing IA lately and now they can go play Legion instead!
So looks like this is basically Rune Wars Star Wars? Luckily it doesn't have the little trays (I think they're a nice game mechanic, but they clutter up the table and I think they look ugly).
I'm still not sure if I'll buy in or not. This game looks really fun, but between X-Wing, Destiny, Imperial Assault, Armada, and Edge of the Empire, my wallet is spread pretty thin! Also, this game looks pretty pricey...
A few random, unorganized thoughts-
- This may not mean anything for IA necessarily, but I certainly wouldn't see it as good news for this game. In the same year that we're already starting to feel like IA has been put on the back burner, I'd say that having another similar miniature game announced, while not totally dooming IA, is a bad omen.
- Maybe I'm wrong (after all, core IA had nexus) but I think that the core of this game having a Rebel riding an AT-RT already shows that they're gonna have a challenge giving the Rebels land vehicles.
- Seriously, Clone Wars was clearly the way to go with this. They're already using vehicles from it...
- Not to criticize the game entirely, the minis look great. Love the different poses (especially that Vader pose) and loadouts. Though, I do agree with @manatee_x that repainting all those stormies is an immediate turnoff.
- I actually kinda wish they were the same size as IA minis. It would be nice to be thrown in some trooper variation, new Vader pose (for his new upgrade?) and a Jedi Luke that could feel more at home in earlier time periods. If anything, this would be more of an incentive for me to actually buy this thing.

I'm in. I'm so in. Even if the rules are garbage, this will work just fine with the WEG minis rules set.

I'm not clear on this. Are they a different scale? One twitter post says the same. Andrew said 34 mm high. Any official comparison? Or at least a best guess?
I would also probably buy it for the alternate sculpts. Stormies can be knocked out pretty quick if you just want tabletop quality. Plus, I've had a lot of practice:)
Sarastro has already posted a how to paint video:

I wish Legion was IA's Armada, but to really sell that feeling I think it would need to have bigger walkers and heavier weapons like you might see in Empire at War or Rebellion. Legion more feels like a larger scale IA, without the tiles and a more traditional war gaming rule set. I'll still probably check it out, especially if I see any cool minis, but not exactly what I was hoping for.

Objectively I think it would probably be best to just open the flood gates and have a Rebel, Imperial, Republic, CIS, First Order, and Resistance factions open up and not care about the era. Let people make the battles they want, it isn't like this is going to be tied to a story campaign or the like. As for the rebels having vehicles I think they have 20 or 30 options from the EU based off of the video games, though the question is how big they plan to go for vehicles. With this scale I'm thinking they probably won't go past AT-ST/AT-DP size unless they make some epic format and release huge AT-AT models and the like, though that poses another issue with storing and transportation.
I think the scale might be the same as IA, just with you having to assemble them and having larger bases, which you can probably find smaller ones if you want them to match. Granted we don't have a one side by side so I could be wrong, I hope not though since it would allow for friendly games to be larger for those who have already dived into IA. I agree that it would be great to throw some variety into IA's campaign too, so I really do hope they are IA size, and in my personal opinion this Luke looks a lot better than the IA jedi Luke we have.
For those wondering about scale, scroll down in this BGG thread to see a picture of the Legion Luke next to the IA Luke. Looks like they are quite similar, but not exact. The Legion minis are a bit bigger.

Wow, that's counter intuitive. I would think that Legion would have been smaller to allow for big vehicles.
On the other hand not all IA figures are exactly to scale with one another. Look at the Jawas for example.

This has been my biggest disappointment. I was looking forward to 15mm scale or similar so we could see squads of airspeeders and roaming packs of wild AT-STs.

But, it's seems close enough to IA to allow some shared use of minis. Perhaps with modification (base swaps etc.)
Eventually, we'll need a new forum for "How to adapt Legion figures to IA" covering both miniature mods as well as fan-made deployment cards for things like rebel troopers with gatling guns (Z-6)

I agree, I think the 15mm format and scaling down the number of "heroes" would have been best. But... at least they could have made them exactly the same size as IA so that we could share miniatures. Having them be slightly bigger is kind of silly. That means the eventual AT AT is going to be the ginormous monstrosity of the WOTC game. This isn'g going to be a 6' by 3' Armada table, it's going to be 6' x 6' table, at least. They are definitely aiming at Warhammer with this.
It's a different scale to IA!?
Oh FFG. How could you fail so hard.
