Old meta list against new meta - how to square the circle?

By Stefan, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi guys,

the problem I'm currently facing presents itself thusly: my opponents all play current meta favorites - Triple-K-Wing, Scurrgh bomber with two TLT Y-Wings, Assaj in various combinations, stuff like that. I like to fly Rebels, but I dislike a) turrets and b) bombs. My usual jouster-heavy lists (that I like) tend to fare pretty badly against what the enemy is fielding, but I don't want to go the route of using beefy ships and/or turrets. So what can I do?

what kind of rebel ships do you usually fly?

I love X-Wings to death. What I really liked to do lastly is Poetensity, Jake and Y-Wing or Triple T70.

Poe Dameron (PS9) — T-70 X-Wing 33
Intensity 2
BB-8 2
Integrated Astromech 0
Ship Total: 37
Wedge Antilles — X-Wing 29
Expertise 4
R5-P9 3
Integrated Astromech 0
Ship Total: 36
"Hobbie" Klivian — X-Wing 25
Targeting Astromech 2
Integrated Astromech 0
Ship Total: 27

This will not survive. I tried stuff like it - Triple T70, as I said - but they get taken apart by turreted ships.

You might try something like this, it's designed against turrets but I've left a lot of leeway in for mods, it's more like a general idea...

The idea is to fly Jess Pava in formation with a pair of Z95 to get the most of it's pilot ability the z95 have deadly missiles that shouldn't be taken lightly (change to cluster missiles if you roll good attack dice). So Jess gets decent damage output while probably saving the a focus for defense (that re-rolls) and Poe Dameron comes in as a deadly flanker... There's 2 point left to modify things, perhaps Jess's EPT, add a sensor cluster or bumping Poe to PS9.

The good thing about this type of list is that it's mainly a defensive build and if your oponent ignores the Z95 they can really hit you hard at first and then work as lovely blockers.

The downside to this list is you need to plan your moves really well for it to work to max efficiency.

Jess Pava (25)
R2-D6 (1)
A Score to Settle (0)
Autothrusters (2)

Poe Dameron (31)
Intensity (2)
BB-8 (2)
Sensor Cluster (2)
Autothrusters (2)
Black One (1)

Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Cruise Missiles (3)
Guidance Chips (0)

Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Cruise Missiles (3)
Guidance Chips (0)

Total: 98

If you're specifically getting eaten by turrets, then T70s can do well, but you'll need to find the points to autothruster them up; the ability to equip autothrusters is one of the T70's biggest edges over the T65 (along with its tech slot)

That'll leave you without the more awesome pilots, though.

If you want a squad that's really hard to kill with turreted guns:

  • Red Squadron Veteran - Intensity, Comms Relay, Autothrusters x 3

Bombs and mines are more of an issue, but with evade tokens and autothrusters it's going to take a lot of turret shots to do more than irritate one of these ships.

To be honest, I'd always speak in favour of more weight of metal on the table - more arcs of fire make it easier to catch slippery targets like Miranda Doni, and a nasty cluster mine roll won't remove 1/2-1/3 of your squad.

'Baby Blues' is a simple squad, but not an easy one to master (see Berto at Slingpaint on youtube for some very good battle reports):

  • Blue Squadron Novice - R2 Astromech, Integrated Astromech x 4

Having used a 5-ship striker swarm, I can assure you that having one ship more than people expect is a much better ability than people give it credit for, especially when the ship is a real heavy-weight like an Integrated Astromech T-70 X-wing that takes only a couple of hit points less to kill than a freakin' Jumpmaster.
