Playing X-wing with Babies

By Force Majeure, in X-Wing Off-Topic

For me it was all about the tradeoffs. There were 12 store champs in my area and I made 4. The difference was that the next day I would kick the wife out to go do her thing: Yoga/horses/library/whatever. I was gone longer as she had to come back and pump, but I made sure she was out most of the day if possible. I went from 3-4 nights a week gaming to 1 evening out, 1 evening in house, and about every other week on a Saturday. It helps a ton if your xwing friends ALSO have kiddos.

We also don't play things to the bloody end anymore. If one person really doesn't stand a probable chance we just scoop and setup another game. More games is better!

I'm definitely not as strong of a player as a year ago before kiddo, but its still as enjoyable.

There is no "up" in space. :o

enh, mine are comparitively "grown" (stepdaughters are 14 and 16, "my" [tsk] kids are 11 and 10), buuuuuuuut one's severely hard of hearing (cochlear implants) and the other is severely autistic... so in a lot of ways it's been like toddler-level care for a decade.

Honestly my game time doesn't exist except as a myth and a rumor. (kidding, it does happen occasionally , but only because my wife dotes on me and pretends to like X-wing from time to time).

Thats a big reason that drove me into the painting forum, my inability to get to or around other "real" gamers (nearest flgs is 2 hours away), so I'd typically spend my little swodges of "me time" repainting my ships. But it doesn't stop me lurking in forums and entering discussions and pretending to be one of the group! And ****, I'mma buy into Legion even though I will almost definitely be "playing" that one alone! (and oh yes, I will come up with rules to play it alone, don't you worry)

...this all sounded more sad than inspirational didn't it?

Congrats Force, if your painting and posting are any indication I'd upvote you as an awesome parent. ;)

First you teach em' to read. (for the cards)

Next, you teach em' to write. (forums)

Then you watch all of the Star Wars movies for the first time in the proper order. (and record their reactions)

Then you get them the Timothy Zahn books. (introduction to the old EU)

Then you teach them the base game and buy their first ship. (and teach them how to re-paint it)

Then you give them a few tips on arc-dodging. (works with dating too!)

Then you teach them how to get a job. (feed the habit)

And then they move out, and you mull over how time went so quickly for a day or two, and then you get back to X-wing.

One step at a time. ^_^

Just Zahn? No X-Wing series? ;_;

@juxstapo Thank you sir! It sounds like YOU are the really great parent. I have a 8 year old girl, 7 & 4 year old boys. I thought I was done with babies, but my wife just can't keep her hands off of me! :o Just kidding.

My middle boy is showing interest in the game, so I may let him try it out soon. We play a kind of "capture the flag" game using SW lego ships, the range rulers and dice from X-wing but if the game lasts more than 30 minutes or so he starts to lose interest. My daughter almost vehemently denies liking Star Wars of any kind, but she secretly draws the figures in her notebooks and corrects us when we get a character's name or event from the movies wrong. #3 is not shy about liking SW or wanting to play. He walks away with my ships if I'm not paying attention. He probably thinks they're just more SW Micro-Machines that daddy wants him to have.

At any rate, SW Legion is going to be here soon enough. I think that will be an easier game to play both with the kids or at the game store. Don't know if you have tried Vassal or Table Top Simulator, but those are two options to play with others without having to leave the house. I've dabbled with TTS and have played against myself, but I'm not confident enough yet with the controls to try playing against actual people. Soon enough. Let me know if you're up for a game!

@Force Majeure TableTop Sim is in fact perched prominently in my Steam library. I've loaded up one of the X-Wing sets and fiddled about, but not gotten past the "fiddling about" stage.

I would certainly be up for a game at some point, with the mutual understanding that occasional child-related AFK's might be an occurrence. ;)

Nice! I'll check my schedule (my wife) and we'll set something up. I'll PM you about it.
