Gen con is fixing to start...and....that faq never happened.

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing

Doesn't look like it's going to happen. What we have is what we have.

Do we really need another fix thread? :P

I.....didn't....even.....realise.

I feel great shame.

should feel greater shame for all the abuse you put those poor ellipses through

Or maybe - just maybe - FFG is waiting until after hosting a huge Premier-level event which people have been practicing their lists for months for like the North American Championships before introducing changes which could radically alter the competitive scene?

Just a thought. ;)

Like with Worlds last year?

Wait.

We've been FAQ-less for months. The last meaningful faq was the nerf one in November. 2 major releases have come and gone and the only clarification issued has been for the croc blue line printing error. There is enough unclear right now that as a to OR player at a major tourney I'd prefer clarity with the risk of losing my list over a lack of both.

Talking of Gencon, has there often been new ships announced in previous years?

That "FAQ" leak was terrible anyway.

Yea. If they dropped a new, impactful FAQ in the last few weeks there would have been legit anger.

It was already supposed to come out after Nationals anyways.

The last time they dropped a faq before a major event people exploded with anger. FFG is probably waiting this time till after gencon.

From a certain point of view. Other POVs found it to be a step in the right direction.

You have to expect FFG would respect their own 11 day rule for major tourneys and new releases. So when it wasn't announced by last weekend, it shouldn't come as a surprise that it wasn't released days before Gencon. And then from FFG's point of view - there's no winning in releasing the FAQ before a major tourney but not having it live for said tourney - they may as well sit on the FAQ until such time that the tourney is over. It gives them one more data point to confirm/deny their thoughts on whether certain things are broken, and if they come to that conclusion, then they can release the FAQ in response to that.

Worst case is they release it beforehand and say not valid until afterwards. That's basically saying "yup, it's broken, but we're going to let it win one more thing first because we didn't respond fast enough. Cheers!"

this shouldn't be about errata. this should be about getting rules precedents in place before a major event so that everyone can agree on what Jabba the Hutt and Pulsed Ray Shield and Minefield Mapper actually do.

Yeah, dropping the new FAQ just over the 11 day cut off would have thrown everything out of wack leading up to the tournament. Releasing it after the cut off, but before the tournament would have basically led to a implied negation of the results by players ("I wouldn't have lost had <ship> been following the new rules, even FFG knew they need to be nerfed."<Card combo> wouldn't have been possible if we were playing correctly.", etc.)

Best now to let the national North American championship play out, then give it a bit to settle, then drop any change.

I do agree with @skotothalamos that some clarifications would have been nice, though.

wrong tourney

The obvious thing to do is have everyone attending bring a different list that will force one of the missing rulings to be made. By the end of the tournament we'll have fleshed out the entire faq including all follow-up questions.

Except we won't. Rulings even at top tier tourneys have been wrong before, both according to the letter of the rules on cards and according to later FAQs. Tourney rulings might give info but they're no more official than any other well informed opinion.

Thank you :)

But Nationals is still 15 days away. Math: If a FAQ is going to be released in time for that it needs to be released by the 19th/21st. Friday would be pretty precisely in time.. Right?

North American champ is at GenCon, US Nationals at NOVA on the 31st. I misspoke earlier.

Yeah, that's kinda tight schedule as well, would they wait until after then?

I almost hope it gets introduced this week, it may be the only chance I have at making the cut...
Kidding. I suck.

ditto. But I will not be attending, hopefully next year I can have my face kicked in because i don't own/want to fly the most OP things. biggs is boring.

Secondary thought: Any FAQ release may have been held off after the leak, as internal investigations distracted matters and enough public furor surrounded what was going to be - if it was real - already the most drastic FAQ change to the rules in history, that it wasn't worth attempting.

With that said, I'd need to comb through dates to do a compare/contrast on timings for previous events. I have a fuzzy memory suggesting they usually try to shake up the meta for Worlds?

Makes a lot more sense to announce a huge change right after a big tournament rather than right before one. Avoids pissing off all the people that have been practicing for that tournament a certain way and allows them to use the tournament results to help justify the change if they need to.
