US Nationals Breakfast

By BiggsIRL, in Star Wars: Armada

That's right folks, it's time to think about breakfast at the US Nationals at the NOVA Open! Having a good breakfast before a tournament is a rule that is the same as written and as intended. Why should you eat breakfast?

World Champions eat breakfast! Just ask 2016 World Champion @JJs Juggernaut . The only US National Champion eats breakfast. Just ask @IceQube MkII . Many Regional and Store Champions eat breakfast before tournaments. So if you want to do well, statistically speaking, you should eat up!

Also, it's just a good fun time. You get to see other members of the Armada community, and put a face with the name, even if you don't play one another in the actual tournament. That is worth $15 for some bacon, pancakes, coffee, and a tip.

I actually wrote a bunch about this: https://xwingtactics.blogspot.com/2017/04/going-to-worlds-eat-breakfast-and-other.html

That being said I know next to nothing about the NOVA Open, so where should we get our breakfast at?

Also noted: I am coming up for the Friday heat, so you Thursday folks are on your own. I'd suggest planning a Thursday breakfast in this thread as well.

Someday I'm going to go to one of these things. Southern California is just so far from everything.

I'm in for Friday, and I'm definitely down. This will be my first time in or near Washington DC outside of an airport, so I sadly have no idea where is good.

I'm doing the Friday heat, my plane lands at 7am so I'll be running real short on time just to get checked and signed in.
Also my first time in DC and I plan to make the most of it after rounds are over!

There's a place right across the street from the hotel that serves a good breakfast for a decent price

Best news I've heard in a while. I always knew bacon was the true key to success. :)

Got a name for this place?

I'm in the same boat. I have no idea what to expect when I get there, or what I'm going to do about food.

Honestly, I don't remember the name, I just remember the bacon. I'll find the name using Google Maps when I have a chance. It's not a chain restaurant.

The venue is surrounded by highways. I think @Audio Weasel is talking about a coffee shop that is nearby.

When I've played at NoVa Open (Warmahordes days)... we always went to this McDonald's...

2620 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Arlington, VA 22202

There will definitely be food trucks for lunch and dinner service.

If you are flying in at (IAD)... I highly recommend Ubering or carpooling (based on your schedule)... it's really close. You get to see things like a SR-71 and Space Shuttle.

Given the lateness of stuff... the most unique and tasty cuisine (hey, befriend someone with a car)...

BonChon Chicken (it's double fried Korean style chicken - a lot of folks like this).

Honey Pig (It's Korean BBQ where they cook all kinds of meats in front of you. It's kinda pricey).

Closer to the hotel... there's a Buffalo Wild Wings, Chipolte, Chick-Fil-A...

Jaleo - is Spanish tapas by I think National Chef of the Year - Jose Andres. It's kinda pricey.

Crystal City Sports Bar... I almost had a seizure from trying to watch an ungodly number of NFL games at once. They have TVs everywhere.

THERE'S A KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN PLACE IN DC??

I've been searching for that ambrosia of the gods since I came back from Korea three years ago. Ain't nowhere like TBA in the US... :(

If you've never had it, you guys need to try it, for srs.

Yeah, it's a chain throughout the DC/NoVA/MD region, with some sporadic global locations. I highly recommend it.

Food Trucks are Good.

The hotel restaurant wasn't that egregious when I went to NOVA Last.

There is plenty of things within a 5minute walk/$5 cab ride.

Also the Hotel should have plenty of menus on hand for delivery/suggestions.

Do a google map view of the hotel and then search for restaurants. or you know, drink enough where you don't care.

Also I am one of the Thursday people... woomp woomp

to be fair ill prolly just crash fridays..... cuz iirc x-wing nationals are that day and i need some breakfast.

For those who are going and NOT staying at the hotel, don't use their parking. There's a garage right next door that's only $5 a day.

As someone going AND staying at the hotel, I can't believe anyone would fly to a city with a functional (ish) subway system and bring a car.

For anyone planning to use the Metro to get around DC, I recommend checking this handy site:

True, but if you're semi-local then it doesn't make sense to waste money on a hotel.

If you're driving your own car in, sure.

I only have one real place to compare this to, which is the SF Bay Area. And after a day or two of 1 hour commutes to go less than 15 miles, you'll stop driving quick.

We're getting close to the day of days! Let's go to [unnamed bacon restaurant]!
