Can you spend boons over and over unlike successes

By Gallows, in WFRP Rules Questions

This directly ties into the impact of how the action cards play out since more boons and comets means greater levels of successes since they can be spent over and over again (unlike successes). So yes, the absolute best case is to generate 3 successes and as many boons as possible.

Commoner wrote this in a different thread and I don't know how to read it. I was under the impression that boons, successes and comets worked in the same way.

Lets say you get 4 successes, 4 boons and one comet.

1. You can spend 3 succeses on +3 damage, the last success is lost unless you can use it on another card that is viable.

2. You can spend 2 boons on the action card you used and the last boons on a critical wound or some other effect on another card.

3. You can spend the comet on a critical wound, an effect on the card you used or a success.

In all three cases you can only use each boon, success and comet once and only pick one particular line of effect once. So if you got 6 boons but only had selectable effect for 2 boons then the last four would be lost.

Right?

I rechecked for certainty and p.45 is very clear on it. Spend them only once, and each effect can only be triggered once. Any that are left over are lost.

That said, I don't think it unreasonable to come up with some other things to cover the excess if they're available. But yeah, by RAW they're lost.

No, Boons and Comets work differently than Successes.

Successes are "evaluated" and you only get to choose one success line and only once, e.g. if you get 6 successes, you can only do the 1 or 3 success line, not both and not 2*the 3 successes effect. This is also clarified in the FAQ.

Boons and Comets are spent, you can use all of them on different effects (but as Donbaloo writes) you can only choose a particular effect once per check. So if you get 6 boons, you can spend 2 boons to trigger an action card effect, 2 boons to trigger the universal effect (recover fatigue/stress) and 2 boons on activating a critical. This is quite clear on p 45 in the rulebook.

Ahh yes then I get the point. It is as I wrote, but there are simply more things you can use boons for whereas successes can only be spent on the action card you used. Players can spend boons on universal effects, talents, actions cards, items perhaps even etc.

Yes, basically.

Successes can only use 1 success line. A 4-success roll cannot trigger both a 1-success and 3-success line on a card. Only 1 or the other gets activated.

Boons and banes can use any number of effects, as long as no single effect is used more than once and the total used does not exceed the total roll.

So, a roll with 4 boons could trigger both a CR2 weapon critical and a 2-boon effect line on a card. Or, both a 1-boon and 3-boon effect line on a card. And so on.

Oh... actually I didn't know that you could use more than one line of boons on a card... now commoners quote makes sense to me. So both the one boon and two boon effect can be used on a card.

Yep, if you've got enough boons you could buy multiple lines from the card, and the Universal Effect, and the critical for your weapon, etc. etc. Spend them till you're out. You just can't buy the same effect more than once.
