So here's the scenario. VIP token is on one ship. Lamda sits within range 1 of that ship and range 1 of another ship. Do the rules on objective tokens allow the token to be moved between ships by the Lamda (or Ghost)?

No.
When a Ship picks up the Token, the token is removed from the play area and is placed on the Ship Card.
The Lambda is in the Play Area.
You cannot measure Distance 1 from something on the play area to something that isn't in the play area.
So you never get within Distance 1 of the Token for Strategic to activate.
Q: Can a squadron with strategic move objective tokens that are assigned to a ship?
A: No.
