Cluster mine overlap

By MRCWING, in X-Wing Rules Questions

This may be basic but I'm newer and having trouble with a rule and if when I play in a tourney don't want to misplay this and get embarrassed or anger another player.

My friend and I were playing a casual game and this came up.

We had cluster mines deployed and the maneuver template was placed. This did not touch or overlap the mines.

However the ship base would have slightly gone over the mine.

does this constitute overlap to detonate the mine and if so does the ship stop as on an asteroid or finish the maneuver?

We are confused since an overlap doesn't occur if a ship can clear another ship even if the maneuver template passes over it.

thanks

it detonates if the movement template over laps or the ship's final position overlaps the token.

To clarify asteroids, because I think you may be confused, you still move your ship to the end of the maneuver, if you hit an asteroid. The only time you dont complete is if your base ends overlapping another ship base. You can completely fly through an asteroid and all you do is roll for a damage and not get an action.

Wow file that under doing it wrong as far as asteroids were concerned then.

I was always stopping on it.

Doh!

The base of a ship only matters at the starting position and final position. It's on page 13 of the Rules Reference under Maneuver.

Yeah, I would have thought that it would be a firm barrier: no flying through it, no shooting through.

I am thinking of making a rule set with 3D obstacles that cant be shot through, flown over, and would block/lose target locks.

Have another read of the Obstacles rules on page 14 and the Moving Through rules on the same page. Moving through is when your template overlaps the obstacle, but when you place your ship at the end of the template, it's not on the obstacle. You still suffer the effect of the obstacle, but you are able to perform an attack in the Combat phase. If your ship finishes its maneuver overlapping the obstacle, you suffer the effects of the obstacle AND you can't perform an attack in the Combat phase.

Either way, unless you are blocked by another ship, you always complete the manuever, including the turns for Koiograns, Segnor's Loops and Tallon Rolls.

Here's another question about cluster mines detonation (and potential damage) timing.

A ship's maneuver dial is revealed

The maneuver template is placed in the front ship base guides as normal

The maneuver template then overlaps a mine token (whether partially or completely thru it to the other side)

Do we detonate the bomb immediately prior to completing the maneuver (by lifting the ship base the the other end of the template)?

Card Text

ACTION: Discard this card to drop 1 cluster mine token set.

*** When a ship's base OR MANEUVER TEMPLATE OVERLAPS a cluster mine token, that token DETONATES.***

The ship might take damage no matter where it ends up overlapping the mine or not after completing the manuever

But the timing might matter if the ship takes damage prior to actually maneuvering is the main concern

The way the card reads it suggests to me the mine would detonate right after placing the maneuver template overlapping it so the ship might take potential damage prior to actually moving to the other side of the template (?)

To be complete Corrected Detonation Text

When a bomb token detonates, the ship that moved through or overlapped that token rolls 2 attack dice and suffers 1 damage for each hit and crit rolled. Then discard that token.

Side note from X-wing wikia

Unlike Proximity Mines, Cluster Mines do not deal critical hits. Any crits rolled cause normal damage. (tricky wording)

Thanx!
