Colonel Jendon

By Seabook, in Star Wars: Armada

I played with him for the first time and couldn't help but be confused about his ability... I searched the FAQ and it just helped me to get even more confused, lol. But the question is simple: if Jendon can't attack for ANY reason (he was far away and he could just move or attack, or he couldn't get in range to attack even with the squadron command), can he still trigger his ability or he can only trigger when he could make a valid attack? I played his ability only when he could attack someone.

You can use it whenever he would have the opportunity to attempt an attack, even if the attack would be cancelled because the intended target is out of range.

So, basically, the only time you cannot use it is if he moves in the squadron phase.

EDIT: Of course, if some other (future) card effect makes Jendon unable to attack at all, then you can't use his ability either.

most people interpret it as instead of using the opportunity to attack you can use his ability instead. you dont actually have to have an opportunity to attack to begin with

You need to have the opportunity to attempt an attack.

There's a big difference between being:

  • a) unable to attempt an attack (e.g. because you moved in the squadron phase and do not have Rogue, or because you used Independence), and
  • b) unable to complete an attack (e.g. because the intended target is out of range, or if a single-die attack is obstructed).

The attack sequence is in the RRG, page 2:

Attack
To perform an attack with a squadron or ship, resolve the following steps:

1 . Declare Target : The attacker declares the defender and the attacking hull zone, if any. If the defender is a ship, the attacker declares the defending hull zone. Measure
line of sight to the defender
to ensure the attack is possible and to determine if it is obstructed.
◊◊ If the attacker is a ship, the defending squadron or hull zone must be inside the attacking hull zone’s firing arcand at attack range of the attacking hull zone.
◊◊ If the attacker is a squadron, the defending squadron or hull zone must be at distance 1 .

If you've gotten as far as this (and found that there are no targets in range), it means you can attempt an attack - and therefore you can use Jendon's ability.

He does NOT need a valid target that he could attack for his ability to work.

He only needs to be able to make a hypothetical attack (so not if he chose to move in the squad phase).

I see, thanks a lot for all the replyes, this helped to solve my doubts about him ^^

Paired with someone like Maarek or Bossk and his ability shines.
