Using Bombs

By Orimaarko, in X-Wing Rules Questions

The rules reference card, "Using Bombs" that came with the Scurgg expansion indicates, that if a bomb is placed overlapping a ship's base then the bomb token is placed under the ship base and does not detonate immediately.

The rules reference book that comes with the newest core set indicates a bomb token placed overlapping a ship base does detonate immediately if the bomb is normally triggered by a ship or maneuver template being placed over it.

There is nothing in the current FAQ addressing when a contact mine detonates. There is mention of it in an FAQ several years ago but the verbiage has since been removed.

So because the rules reference card from the Scurgg expansion is the most up to date rules document, with no clarification in the current FAQ, does the reference card have precedence? Meaning mines no longer detonate immediately if placed under a ship base.

I have all my old "Using Bombs" cards. I checked and they haven't changed the wording on them, they're all the same as the new one. I would say the bomb card is just incomplete. The wording in the rules reference is basically word for word identical except it has "unless the Bomb's upgrade card specifies that it detonates when a ship overlaps it" So I would say unless there's an FAQ to the contrary contact mines still go off if they're dropped directly on a ship.

Some bombs/mines detonate at the end of the Activation phase; others detonate when they come into contact with a ship's base. Refer to the specific reference card for each type of bomb/mine.

But from memory, Ion Bombs, Seismic Charges, Bomblet Generator, Thermal Detonators, and Proton Bombs all detonate at the end of Activation phase. Conner Nets, Cluster Mines, and Proximity Mines all detonate when a ship flies over them or they are dropped and immediate come into contact with a ship's base.

The reference card is a general card to all types of bombs. You have to check the detonation conditions of each bomb itself, and there you can find that some of them actuslly detonate when placed pverlapping a ship.

don't need a FAQ when it's in the rulebook:

page 7 "Bombs"

"• If a bomb token is dropped on a ship, it is placed under the ship’s base. The bomb does not immediately detonate unless the bomb’s Upgrade card specifies that it detonates when a ship overlaps it."
