Han Solo Movie Release Date: May 25, 2018

By Boom Owl, in X-Wing

Seeing as there is basically a 100% chance that Boba Fett appears in and then spins off from the Han Solo Movie.

When is an appropriate time to start getting hyped for the Imperial Boba buff they will be legally obligated to release next spring?

Early Spoiler: X-Wing gets its first transformer in disguise.

My personal idea for an Imperial Boba Pilot improvement would have something to do with upgrading the model to be whatever this is :

So soon, why in May and not in Dec like the last couple of movies?

It's Disney bringing things forward a bit. For 2019, they want Episode IX to be a May release instead of a Christmas release - and don't want it to be competing with theaters already running the Han Solo movie still from Christmas. (OTOH, that obviously means the Han Solo movie will be competing with the end of the Last Jedi's run - but I guess they figure it's better Han Solo take that hit than Episode IX)

So we can expect the Gunboat in Wave 14 instead of wave 15... excellent.

I want this movie to not suck but its production is a complete mess. At this point, it'll be a miracle if they can pull off another Rogue One-type salvage operation. Oh well, at least we get some new ships and cool aliens.

I hope it's good, but who's kidding anyone; I'll see it anyway.

RO was pushed back from May to December.

Ep8 was pushed back from May to December.

I would be very surprised if Han gets released in May.

Especially with all the production turmoil.

Actually, RO was always set for December. It's just TLJ that got pushed back. And Lucasfilm has kept mentioning a May date for Solo even throughout the directorial shake-ups. If they haven't postponed it by now, I don't think they will anymore - it would seriously screw up plans for not just themselves, but all sorts of publishing and merchandising companies - FFG included.

Also, if Boba Fett was really an important part of the Solo film... Shouldn't there have been a casting announcement for a young Maori guy?

@BoxerlessBossk

Nah. If Disney is smart they will never show Boba Fett without his helmet on and would not over use him to keep him under wraps, basically put him in maybe 1 or 2 scenes as a threat. Just have him appear as a force of nature that Han has to scramble to survive.

Right on, brother!

This is Disney. They'll overdo it. See Sabine.

@wiesguy119

Ok fine if thats the case they should just get Keanu Reeves to play Boba Fett and make him Space John Wick.

The Han Solo film is going to be so bad. Not least because it's just totally unnecessary.

there was a young Han Solo film already, called Star Wars. He had a character arc (went from ruthless murderer to hero) and there is no real need for more.

Bloody Disney. Lol.

All I know is that if they don't bring a Smugglers and Scoundrels faction into the game there's a good chance that we might be getting Scum Han and Scum Lando next year.

Is he not space John Wick? Plus or minus a Wookie and some other crew...

Friendly reminder that the idea of a Han solo movie actually came from George Lucas.

I still don't think it's a stellar idea either, but we'll see...

Actually, I would think it would be more interesting if they set up a situation where Solo and Fett work together on a job for Jabba. Prior to ANH, both of them were in his employ. Just have Solo have to move something that Jabba assigns Fett to as more protection to and queue anti-Imperial and anti-pirate shenanigans.

Maybe they end the movie with some mutual respect for each others capability. Sets the scene for Fett having to hunt down Solo later in Empire.

PS Even better, have Solo come up with the trick where he hides in a garbage dump to escape detection while Fett's on board, which shows why Fett would later predict him to do the same trick.

As long as the Han Solo movie is relatively dark. An anti-hero noir type crime movie, with him and chewie always one step ahead of the ISB while working for Jab a smuggling drugs, it'll be good.

If they try to white wash his character to make him some secret altruist it will taint him. They need to make him a greedy murdering slime ball.

But... that's always been his character.

He's a swindler, a cheat, and perfectly willing to shoot someone dead. But he's not evil - he won't stab his friends in the back (well, unless it's cheating at cards, but they're doing it too so it's only sporting?).

I didn't say evil. I said greedy murdering slimeball. Besides, I don't think he really became the noble thief till after he'd spent a while with the Rebellion. Only reason I think he didn't sell out the Rebellion immediately during A New Hope was because he doesn't like the Empire and he's a wanted man. If he wasn't like that, I'll bet he would have had zero problems selling out the Rebel base location for a few credits and a pardon.

Basically, "Han shot first" needs to be kept in mind. During this movie, Han cannot be a "nice guy" who is just running with a bad crowd. He is the bad crowd. He only grows a consciousness later after working with Luke and Leia.

So yeah, he should be totally willing to stab his "friends" in the back with very few exceptions. He has "friends" in the same way Hondo has "friends". At that point in his career, only Chewie should be an actual friend he'd actually care about. Everybody else is expendable from his point of view.

Eh...they seem to be aiming the movie a bit earlier than that.

That is - the idealistic Han Solo that joined the Imperial Academy, only to end up...not in it, anymore, somehow (I assume nuCanon retcons the details). The movie has Woody Harrelson cast as Han Solo's "mentor", after all, who one would assume is a major factor in him becoming more selfish and jaded (looking at his Zombieland roll as 'basically Woody Harrelson as usual but with zombies, now' and this one being 'basically Woody Harrelson as usual but in space, now').

TFA showed pretty clearly what the franchise wants to do with Han Solo - he's a con man, a smuggler, and not very good at either. Occasionally he gets really lucky (but it's specifically not the Force! oh, no - it's just luck. Except we, the audience, know that of course any time Han 'lucked out' it WAS the Force, and otherwise he's pretty much the worst smuggler ever).

Did any of you read the Han Solo trilogy by A. C. Crispin? Those Books are great, builds up his personality and story perfectly well Till he meets Kenobi and Luke In Mos Esley. Too bad you can be 100% sure They wont use It and Will make up a completly New story for him. If They would, Jyn Erso would be called Bria Tharen, Hans ex-gf...

But does the movie even have a name yet? Or are they going with "Han Solo Movie"?

Not really expecting a name for it until after TLJ hits theaters. While the reason it is coming out so close to TLJ makes sense, it does make marketing for it tricky as they don't want to step on the earlier film too much. (Which is...well, the reason that the overlap Disney is willing to put up with is Han Solo having a shorter marketing run coming after TLJ vs Episode IX having a shorter run coming after Han Solo)
