Heard rumors saying that there maybe will be an TOI Modern Combat.. .aha?! Anyone heard something about it? I hope they don't will do something like this, they should better focus on expansions... we heard rumors a long time ago...

I hope those rumors are false. I would much rather see them produce more wwii expansions. Also why can't they put out a couple new campaigns, package them with large paper maps, ala asl. The paper maps would drive down production cost emmensely. Add a scenario book with single battles to add to everyones collection and a big campaign game. Throw in a couple new command decks and I think they would be very marketable. You could sell a package like that for 25 or 30 dollars.
I also hope this is juts a rumor...If true count me out. I now have 20 years in uniform and am not interested in playing a game of what I do in reality. Same reason I have avoided the Modern Combat style video games...hit to close to home.
I enjoy historical wargaming because it is "historical" or at least somewhat based on History.
Expand on the great sytem that is already available and give the fans what they want in the form of new expansions even is they are just vehicle packs or more scenarios if not a full blown Eastern front or Pacific expansion in the style of DoTF or Normandy.
These rumors are coming from?...

I would pass on it as well. This is a WWII game and there is much left to cover.
I'm pretty skeptical of this rumor's veracity, but...
I'm not going to dismiss it out of hand. I realize a modern version of ToI might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I've always been impressed by FFG's production standards - that's the main reason I bought ToI in the first place - so if this proves to be true I'll probably give it a try.
Having said that, I would stil prefer FFG to flesh out the Eastern Front and Pacific Theater (especially the oft-neglected Pacific) before moving on to other eras. However, I can see an argument for giving up on WWII. It's an over-saturated market. We've got Memoir '44, Conflict of Heroes, Combat Commander: Europe, Axis and Allies Miniatures, and Lock 'N Load just to rattle off a few, plus how many video games? I like playing WWII wargames as much as the next guy, but I think everyone can agree it's been done to death. Sure change is scary, yet sometimes things turn out better than expected.
Sincerely,
Yipe
P.S. With regards to paper maps - please no, never. Coming from AAM, WAS and a handful of other paper map games, I can tell you paper is not the way to go. The ToI boards are beautiful and hold up well to repeated play. Personally, I would rather see ToI hit the end of the line before FFG starts skimping on the components.
Hypothetically if FFG was going to go in another direction than WWII I would prefer they went the opposite direction. Give me a WWI version or ACW...WWI has very few land games out there. ACW there are plenty of traditional board games, but not much recent and with the exceprion of battle cry (Same sytem as Memoir 44) there is no mini game version available that I am awre of this does not require massive amounts of mini painting.
Back to reality, I hope this is all rumor and if true does not detract from the further development of ToI. Yes there are othe roptions out there for WWII and I have played several of them....for the money and time you need to invest (rules, painting minis etc) I think TOI is right at the top of the group.
Now get busy and give us some more material FFG.
Papermaps ...UUUH... well, maybe it would save production costs, but i am willing to pay a few Euros or bucks more to get it in a longliving version like they're at the moment!
Boster Packs. .. well, if it's not the same flop like Axis and Allies did...ok... it also would be a good thing to buy reserves... a friend lost two US Troops at a gameday.... so it would maybe disburden the support boys from FFG... and also you were able to do "HUGE ...HUGE ...Games" with whatever 30 Tanks on each side...KURSK - DEATH RIDES WITHIN... would be a good name of the scenario
WWI Version ... no... i don't think this would work..interessting, but not for a mass of players...
Modern Version ... it's not easy to do one if you don't adapt the scale of the maps. Present technical equipment would need larger maps... maybe not rifles or machineguns, but Tanks and Artillery... Better they do a uniqe game of modern combat, and if it is as good as TOI is, i will 100%ly buy it!!! FFG stand for quality and a good elaborated gameplay!

WWI would be an interesting addition to ToI - especially if there was a way to sneak in those beautiful Wings of War planes. For the truly ambitious you could run a "what if" campaign spanning the two wars. And anyone wanting map boards with trench systems, well, I imagine they'd get their fill with a WWI game.
I'm curious what modern conflicts people might be interested in seeing?
My initial thoughts focused on Vietnam, but I'm wondering if a more generalized approach might be better? Something that could represent low-level conflicts like Somalia and the constant bush wars in Africa (e.g. Executive Outcomes in Angola and Sierra Leone, etc) or Central and South America, perhaps? I think having a range of 80s era Soviet armor and helicopters, along with guerrilla weapons like Technicals, to recreate such engagements might be fun.

Then you should take a look on MBT...Main Bsttle Tank... nice game to play in the 80's...but rules over rules over rules...oh... and the rules for the rules

I went back to page 33 or something and someone else asked this question , DEC of 2008, and he got no responses. Its odd i suppose. When the game is new, every one wants expansions and maps and such to enhance the game, but when it turns cold, as it has for many people, i don't know when "Normandy" came out, that now people are thinking again along the lines of a different war.
