What do you think is the likelihood that FFG will make all-new expansions for this 4th edition of Twilight Imperium? And, if they do make expansions, would the $150 core set be more than enough for you, or are you a completist like me and HAVE to get the expansions, too?
Will there be (would you buy) any expansions?
All of it. Give me all the shiny new things!
I hope to see expansions, there are a few elements of 3rd edition not present(tanks!?!), so hopefully this means more stuff in the future.
Edited by JukeyDepends on whether the 4th ed is any good. But probably.
I would love for them to release an official Star Wars 'mod' for this game, now that FFG has rights in that front. Perhaps post empire era, between Jedi and Awakens.
Daydreaming aside, I would love a two player (or even single player) expansion, perhaps with a campaign or story mission, similar to what was included in Shards.
More planets/systems is always nice for further variety.
I'm sure their will be a 7-8 player expansion. But I think it would be smarter for them to release a white/grey fleet box with just ships, that way they can be easily painted to match the colours of each race. They could even load up a PDF file that gives players an idea of how to pain each race's fleet. I would love to have a custom fleet like this for my favorite races. I hope someone at FFG sees this post and runs with this idea! Just put the ships in a baggie and ship it. Cheap and easy money!
I would also totally buy an expansion that included 17 different flagship models.
Depending on what they add and how the basegame plays, it could go either way.
But most likely ill buy anything and everything they release for TI4.
It looks like none of the following are included, and all of them are must-haves to my eyes:
1. Minis for 7-8 players
2. Mech Units
3. Distant Suns and Final Frontier tokens
There are other "missing" things, but those are the three that I care about enough that I'm definitely hoping to see an expansion.
I would assume that the first expansion would add support for 8 players.
Anything beyond that, and I think we'll need to get the base game in our hands to see how the changes impact gameplay, and what would make sense to add from the TI3 expansions, or what new things would be cool.
Unless it flops extremely hard, they will almost certainly make at lest one expansion to enable 8 player games.
It does seem odd that in an upgrade to the game you can now have a maximum of 6 players with no option for 8 in the box. Half of our games have been with 7-8. I did pre order as TI3 is my favorite game ever. But honestly I can see myself just mining it for improvements. I'm not going to turn away a willing player (a rarity for TI3) just because we decided to go into the "new era".
Hopefully it won't be too difficult to just adapt existing TI3 components in order to do more than 6 players. Hardest part, based on what we currently know, will probably creating tech decks for the extra players.
Assuming the 2 types of hexes are compatible.
I'm excited to get TI4, the changes seem very positive.
I'll buy expansions, even though I'm unlikely to play a 6+ player game.
People, seriously. The game hasn't even come out yet.
That being said, if I like TI4 as much as TI3, I will probably check out any expansion.
Edited by mp663I like the choices they made in terms of the inclusion of SE and SotT expansion content into the new 4th edition core box. Since it's apparently bred into the genes of FFG, I would be surprised if they did NOT do at least one expansion and include the elements (likely with some revisions) that did not make the cut:
8-player support
Leaders
Mechanized Units
Mercenaries
Shock Troops
Space Mines
Additional action/agenda/technology cards
Variant compendium/Scenarios
More races/units/planet tiles?
After all, when TI3 was first published it was advertised as the "be all-end all" epic space opera game- and then had two expansions added to it in the years that followed.
I for one would rather see a Star TREK version of TI3/TI4 than a Star WARS one.
SW only really have two sides: Jedi/Sith; Empire/Rebels and so on.
ST on the other hand have a good abundance of races that have been shifting alliance-constellations plenty enough to fit better into the Twilight Imperium mechanics. Plus Klingons are badass!
Somebody did design Star Wars races and played them in a PBEM. They worked pretty well, though they kind of had to stretch a bit to get 6 different races. I believe the game was called The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The Good were the Rebels and the Naboo (technically part of the Old Republic, I know). The Bad were the Empire and the Trade Federation. The Ugly were the Hutts and the Bounty Hunters.
I believe there were some Star Trek variants as well, but I don't recall anybody actually playing with them. I agree wholeheartedly that the political intrigue of Trek fits Twilight Imperium much, much better. Star Wars is mostly just about good vs. evil. Trek is full of political and ethical intrigue between nations, not just within them.
I'd love to see Trek races, though I don't think we'll ever see them supported in any official capacity. That's ok though, fans can take care of that. The main Klingon ability would have to be something like: When you execute the primary or secondary ability of the Warfare Strategy Card, you may execute both abilities.
No...
Which translates to yes in regular english.

Please keep Star Wars away from my favourite game.
For what dealing Star Trek: it would be nice to have an expansion with Star Trek races but I personally wouldn't mix TI races with ST ones in the same game... they are two different universes and unless some fool Tholian scientists create a tear between the two realities with a tricobalt device there won't be any reason to mix them.
Anyway, instead of adding universes I think they should consider to expand and develop the lore of TI universe because until it stay only in Peterson's head it is useless. In my opinion they set up a wonderful background (with some recall from Dune, which I personally consider a positive feature) and I hope it will be expanded and detailed.
