Friend who loves Gundams challenged me to make his favorite Gundam into an xwing ship for my hotac campaign. Challenge accepted!

Disclaimer: this is intended only for high level, augmented hotac campaigns where the enemies are capable of downing most of the "normal" hotac ships in single volleys. It is not uncommon at all for most enemies to be able to attack multiple times per turn, all elites have 1 higher pilot skill than the highest on the field, etc etc. This is admittedly ridiculous and a little insane and should not ever be used in a traditional campaign or normal xwing games.

That being said, I really like the idea of adapting certain gundam units to my hotac campaign and think they could bring some very unique mechanics to the table. This is the first of 7 or 8 of them I'm going to work on and make available for my pilots at the end of season 2 of our campaign as a reward.

I have no idea about Gundam. But looks awesome!

Other than being broken beyond all belief (probably too good even for HotAC) this is actually kind of awesome.

At first I was gonna say the primary weapon value was WAY too long for this, but you covered it with the add-on cards which is amazing :D

This thing would be INSANELY broken and OP in ANY current game mode, but if you bring in the other Gundams and Mobile Suits from SEED/Destiny, you could balance it to THOSE (which are also insanely broken and OP even within that universe!), this could be a **** fun game of pure insanity :D

I'd actually love to see more Gundams done up X-Wing style... just... keep the universes separate. Once you start bringing in stuff like Wing or X or Seed to go up against Universal Century mobile suits (especially earlier suits deployed during the One Year War and a few years after) there will be a HUGE imbalance.

Interesting job. Which stats for Leo suits ?

Not quite there yet. Gotta playtest this against my current hotac assortment and see how my augmented ai deals with it!

1 hull, 0 shield, 1 attack, 1 ag, 5 cost

That's pretty neat. There have been a few Gundam homebrew wargame attempts before, but none that take place in space as far as I've seen, which feels like an oversight considering most of the shows put a lot of focus on space combat.

Leos aren't that bad. They get a bad rep because they have to go up against the hero suits all the time. Kinda the same deal with the Tie Fighter, really.

Standard Leos and Zaku IIs would probably have the same stats since, well, they're practically the same **** suit. Maybe 2 attack, 3 hull? Char's Red Zaku II would totally have nothing but Green and White maneuvers and one extra hull (definitely a title)

Great.... GREAT... now you have me looking for miniatures of Gundams and mobile suits for a conversion of X-Wing and... I broke free of Gundam YEARS ago! YEARS! and here you are dragging me back into it...

You glorious bastard....

Bandai made some 1/220 scale kits in the 80s that would probably fit in next to x-wing ships, just a little bigger than they should be. The bad news is they're old as heck, and they only ever made suits from Zeta Gundam. On the plus side, they're like 2 dollars a pop. That said the little rick dias looks pretty neato

That is REALLY cool... and come on, Zeta Gundam stuff would translate SO WELL for this game! Transforming ships have two dials with their transformed modes having faster moves, but more stress while the mobile suit modes have slower speeds, but far less stressed moves... or, keep it simple and use the same dial with special conditions mentioned on the card...

Example: Zeta Gundam in Wave Rider mode would do a boost with the 2 straight or bank template before revealing the dial or something to get that extra speed gained by that mode...

Oh man... I am having just so many ideas of what the Zeta Gundam could be able to do in this with all of it's equipment options it had. Beam rifle, hyper mega launcher, fore arm grenade launchers, it's vulcan cannons (could be an extra damage boost at range 1 along with it's beam saber?)

OH GOD! What about funnels?!?

THE RIDE NEVER ENDS HAHAHA

I am curious about Gundam now. Some advice about what to watch or read first? I must admit I like Battletch, GitS etc...but zero knowledge about Gundam.

Each series is pretty self-contained, with the exception of direct sequels like Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED: Destiny, so you can basically start wherever you want. A lot of the older stuff, while classic, is pretty dated these days, though. Both in terms of animation and dub quality (which is less of an issue if you watch subbed, since you can't really tell how hammy they're being).

Gundam SEED isn't a bad place to start, it was the first series I watched back in the days when you had to stay up late and sneak into the lounge at midnight to watch Gundam, GitS, and Fullmetal Alchemist on Cartoon Network. Of the newer stuff, a couple of my favourites are Gundam 00 and Iron-Blooded Orphans.

Thanks. I am curious about this. Good luck and fly casual

I recommend checking out 0083 Stardust Memory. It's shorter clocking in at around 13 episodes, and while it isn't the most amazing story in the franchise, it's quite possibly the best in terms of watching giant robots shooting at eachother. The animation in it is top tier.

Also it's basically Top Gun in space.

I'm a HUGE fan of the older shows and the entirety of Universal Century shows and it's really fun to watch them in their timeline order, though the different animation quality and styles can be a TAD jarring.

Mobile Suit Gundam - (though if you're gonna start here, grab the movie trilogy)
08th MS Team
0080: War in the Pocket
0083 (one of the BEST series honestly)
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (my personal favorite and also has a movie series that condenses the series, but also COMPLETELY negates the existence of...)
ZZ Gundam (a direct continuation of Zeta Gundam, but a good 2/3s of the show has a COMPLETELY different tone and feels like more of a sentai show than a Gundam show)
Char's Counter Attack
Gundam Unicorn (stupid name, but a REALLY good show)

There's more AFTER all of this, but it's not fantastic, really difficult to find, and very, VERY dreary.

If you're looking for something more modern, Seed and Seed Destiny. Seed is great and echoes a LOT from First Gundam and Zeta Gundam and is an engaging series. Destiny... took a while to find its footing again. It does get really good once the cast from Seed come back into play though.

There are plenty of other Gundam shows out there. Wing is probably the most famous... and in my opinion the most over rated. Yes, it's what got me into the franchise originally, but after seeing a bulk of everything else out, it doesn't hold up at all.

G Gundam is just pure fun. It's Dragon Ball Z with giant robots.

Gundam X is a great spin off the themes of First Gundam. It's set up like a "What if" where if the space colonies won the war and how life on Earth was affected. The Gundam designs are also **** cool.

Bloodstained Orphans is worth a watch, but your mileage may vary. I couldn't get into it, but I know it has a strong following.

Gundam 00... this is what killed the franchise for me. I really don't have anything to say about it.

Turn A Gundam... another polarizing one, but pretty **** fun in my opinion.

I'm ready for the Ready Player One miniatures game. Imagine the selection!

My suggestions: If you don't mind retro anime, watch the original Gundam from 1979 and Gundam Zeta, then watch the OVA's 0080, 0083, and 08th MS team. This follows the original Gundam storyline and characters. Shows like Gundam Wing are spin-offs that take place in different universes(but are still fun to watch). Its a bit complitcated to figure out what to watch and when, but its worth the effort.
