3rd $89 4th is going for $149? What is causing this big price increase?
Holy Price increase
Pretty obviously it's because it contains all the stuff from 3 full expansions.
LoL who cares about the price. Gimmi it. i would pay more, if they put more stuff in
holy crap. this is going to be $200 cnd.

12 years passing from 3rd to 4th edition. I'm pretty sure there's nothing around having the same price you were paying in 2005. And of course in general games are more expensive these days

From the looks of it, everything is the same as far as plastic, so not like they are making new molds or anything, just changes to card text, rule book and mechanic changes. Nothing that would warrant a $60 price increase. But if as @BillyBabel says is true and it includes all 3 of the third edition expansions, then that makes more sense.
There's 17 races in the box according to the preview. In any case the price for plastic hasn't remained the same in the last 12 years
Price is fine.. for the content.
It doesn't include everything from the expansions, just the most important things like races (seriously did anyone use mines, mercenaries or leaders?)
Annoyling for us Europeans you can double the price. The shipping is around 80$ and tax puts another 20% on it, resulting in approx 300$.
300 for a preorder to Europe.. not possible

We used leaders, and mercs a lot actually. Mines were sorta silly though.
If they leave out too much stuff, then this is a definite pass for me though.
Edited by Willangewhat have you got against mines? I loved mines.
According to the article, local retailers will be able to offer the "pre-order" deal. As such, US or Europe, you should be able to pre-order locally without having to pay the shipping.
That said at 149 bucks, this will be the most expensive game I have ever bought. At this point, as excited as I am to see FFG continue with in my opinion the best game ever printed, I was really hoping that 4th edition would be driven more by modern design then act as a replication of the existing version. From what I can see, if you already have 3rd edition, aside from some minor changes the difference between 3rd and 4th edition is fairly humble, mostly aesthetics.
Still I can help but be pulled in, as a fan of well over 10 years, this remains the pride and joy of my collection, while at the same time the greatest dust collector. At 6+ hours in length, I was really hoping that 4e would cut back the playtime through streamlining.
Exciting news all the same!

Well, this isn't true. It doesn't include the extra minis for two more players -- this game still only plays six, as opposed to the expanded eight. That's a pretty significant omission, and one they'll obviously add on later so they have a definitive reason to sell expansion.

Looking at the pics I see many of the plastic pieces are new designs, most notably the Warsun, Flagship and cruiser.

We used all three of these and more.
Leaders, specifically, was always a great addition albeit somewhat too complex to explain to new players.

Nothing in particular. They just often didn't seem very cost efficient. We have only us to play with though so it could easily come down to playstyle. That said, we always leave the option open to use them.

That's true, but the price is as much a compromise as the original box and 2 expansions. After all, getting Vanilla and 2 expansions puts you at about 210 bucks.
I think the things left out, like 7-8 player's, leaders and a few other things aren't vital components. Pretty much everything left out is what you would normally leave out of a typical TI game anyway for various reasons. What is there is really the core content of 3rd edition. Not suggesting I have an opinion about the value here, it might or might not be worth it, but as a fan and player, if I was going to put out a 4th edition and had to make cuts to save on cost/price, the things they chose and what I would choose would be fairly in line. So I think for now I can say its a fair compromise.
Besides, I have played TI3 for a decade and it cost me 210 bucks to do it. I can count on one hand the things that have entertained me for a decade for such an insignificant amount of money. **** thats about a dinner and a movie for two these days.

Also, weren't Flagships not part of the original 3rd edition game? I recall them being part of an expansion before.
I think a lot of our minds tend to gloss over the expansions of the game and think the things we think are integral to the game are part of the original set. Nostalgia glasses and all. It has been twelve years since its release, after all. I, for one, store all my Twilight Imperium pieces in the same box, so it's easy to see how that kind of thing would happen.
Right, I forgot that Flagships were an expansion. I admit that I'm surprised at the popularity of leaders and mercenaries, they always seemed too fiddly for my group *shrug*

No, definitely new sculpts. While the basic design is the same, if you look closely you can see some significant differences.

We dont really have any idea how different it is yet. From the article it looks like politics and voting has been moved to a separate phase independent of the strategy cards and players may vote on more than 1 agenda each round. I think they are getting rid of the tech tree altogether and prerequisites will just be generic "X techs of the same color". Commodities are a brand new thing and we don't quite know how they fit in yet.
Basically, we don't know. It might still play basically the same or it might be introducing new ideas that radically alter how the fundamental mechanics play out.

It looks like the War Suns are two pieces now, which will look nice. The model for the Dreadnauhht looks almost the same, as do the carriers and Space Docks (but they are different) but everything else is updated, almost unrecognizable by comparison.

The trade and politics seem more organic. Hopefully the laws have a bit more weight behind them. Building PDS and Space Docks is VERY different.
I can't wait to get my eyes on the new rules.
The one thing I dont like is that the player sheets take up more space by the look of them. Player space is limited enough as it is in 3rd. Though perhaps the plastic models can be kept in their matching sections on the sheet now.
In my cart it says 0$ in taxes. How is that? Will the taxes be added after the purchase or no taxes at all? 80$ of shipping cost, putting this in the 200€ realm makes it a hard decision, adding 20% to that is actually a deal breaker, no matter how much I liked 3rd edition.
This edition looks like it'll include most of the stuff from the two expansions, while still leaving out enough key things (7-8 players, Mech Units, etc.) to justify one more expansion instead of two. So my guess is that the difference in the total MSRPs here is:
TI3: $90 + $60 + $60 = $210
TI4: $150 + $60-80 (?) = $210-230
In other words, either no price increase or no more than one would expect for inflation.
