Getting jealous

By Waywardpaladin, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Anyone else getting jealous of the L5R LCG?

The amount of Lore they're getting, the GenCon storyline tournament....

I know L5R has a LOT of Lore backing them, but I'd like to see that kind of effort put into Runewars to flesh out Terrinoth as well. I imagine that if they do intend to support the setting that strongly, they're waiting for all 4 factions to be out before doing so.

I actually wish this game was set during the 1st Darkness instead. They had a lot of faction variety back then in Diskwars.

L5R has a ton of lore and as a card game, it's a much easier product to manage and has a better profit margin; especially if you need 2-3 core boxes for a complete set of cards. I see FFG putting a ton of focus on this, maybe even more so than they have Destiny.

Yeah the focus on L5R I find kind of curious tho I'm sure that's entirely driven by the perception that that kind of game can be successful.

I do completely recognize that our little part of the Runewars universe is a difficult market. Not only do you have to enjoy this style of miniatures game but you've got to enjoy one set in this particular universe as compared to say GoT, etc. Add in the guilt around miniatures being painted and that's a tough one.

I'm sticking with it, but gotta admit my eye is sure watching that kickstarter for GoT Song of Ice and Fire but just not going there as to me organized play and FF's excellent organization in that area is super important to me.

It is my understanding that the original L5R used to have lore driven tournaments where the results were reported and actually had in universe impacts. Essentially, the universe morphed and changed as the game went on based on how people played the game and who was winning overall.

L5R will provide an abundant source of revenue for them, which is what we want to keep RW going IMO.

L5R has a huge fan base already and they need to work hard to keep those people interested in the game since the property was sold to FFG by AEG. If they don't give it their all, FFG stands to lose a vast number of players that they were counting on keeping when they bought the license.

Runewars is a relatively new IP to many people. There is no need to "keep" anybody. They can take their time developing lore and drawing in more and more people as they do. That's my perception on the situation.

Yeah, but I already had that back with DiskWars ><
It was great to get story scenarios from them and see the story always expanding.

I suppose I was also spoiled by MageKnight and Golem Arcana.

MageKnight... those were fun games.

I used to be a judge for MK and Heroclix back in '04-'05. Tons of tournament scene, almost like MTG in terms of finding games going on.

MK was great. Constant scenarios, results mattered, we even got campaign pins for each storyline :P

That and gobs of prize support and free material for new players. We would get boxes of 20-30 figures (mostly commons and uncommons, with one rare) to just hand out to new players who demoed the game.

That said, I think something similar could work with RW. Wouldn't hurt for FFG to hand out upgrade cards or something small to recruit new players.

Mage Knight was amazing. It was the first minis game ever for my son and I; good memories there, and I've been fond of CMG's ever since. Wish a quality new one would be released (hint, hint FFG).

As for Rune Wars incentives and support, some alternate artwork unit cards would be really cool in my opinion.

I love the coins that Privateer press did, so would love to see special cycle edition token sets or something like that. metal ones.

Cards are cool but since they are not limited by a licensed model and paint job like they are in X-Wing or Armada, why not alternative unit sculpts?

Also where's my undead dragon?

L5R is a 20 year old game that has had a massive and passionate following at different times in its life. FFG can't just release it like any of their other games. There's no time to 'let it grow' - it has to start with a bang. Imagine if a different publisher was releasing MtG - they couldn't just go "here's your core set, see you in a few months with some little packs and a tournament kit".

Also L5R is a game that has always had the lore and gameplay closely intertwined, so they have to have it well fleshed out from the get go

Wasn't influencing the lore part of the prize in the L5R world tournaments?
