First-time poster Liberty build - feedback appreciated

By JustModelDads, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Hi gents,

I'm off to my first 400 pt store tournament in a a week or so and, with a few games under my belt, I was looking for some feedback on this Liberty list. I figured I'd fly the MC30s in a gun line or as flankers with the MC80 as an overpowered trailer / tank. The X-wings are in there as a fighter screen and, if any are left towards turns 5 or 6, they can revert to bombing.

Anyways, feedback welcome - thanks!

- Gunnery Team (7 pts)

- Nav Team (4 pts)

MC30c Torepedo Frigate (63 pts)

- Major Derlin (7 pts)

= 70 pts

MC30c Torepedo Frigate (63 pts)

- Lando Calriassian (4 pts)

= 67 pts

GR-75 Medium Transports (18 pts)

- Toryn Farr (7 pts)

= 25 pts

1 Biggs Darklighter (19 pts)

1 Jan Ors (19 pts)

3 X-wing Squadrons (39 pts)

Just to save points drop to a Star cruiser and trade SW7 for leading shots. If you roll too many blue accuracies discard one to reroll the others and any blank reds. If you really need an accuracy against a flotilla then discard a blue hit and reroll all the other blues.

APTs and ordnance experts are a must for MC30s especially with Dodonna in command. Admonition I think is better than Derlin and you can drop an X wing or downgrade one to a Z95 if you need more points.

Here's what I came up with. The only difference between mine and what @Mad Catsuggested is Blissex on Admonition and Skilled First Officer on the Mon Karren.

Faction: Rebel Alliance

Commander: General Dodonna

Assault Objective: Most Wanted
Defense Objective: Planetary Ion Cannon
Navigation Objective: Solar Corona

MC30c Torpedo Frigate (63 points)
- Admonition ( 8 points)
- Walex Blissex ( 5 points)
- Ordnance Experts ( 4 points)
- Assault Proton Torpedoes ( 5 points)
= 85 total ship cost

MC30c Torpedo Frigate (63 points)
- Lando Calrissian ( 4 points)
- Ordnance Experts ( 4 points)
- Assault Proton Torpedoes ( 5 points)
= 76 total ship cost

GR-75 Medium Transports (18 points)
- Toryn Farr ( 7 points)
= 25 total ship cost

[ flagship ] MC80 Star Cruiser (96 points)
- General Dodonna ( 20 points)
- Mon Karren ( 8 points)
- Skilled First Officer ( 1 points)
- Gunnery Team ( 7 points)
- Nav Team ( 4 points)
- Spinal Armament ( 9 points)
- XX-9 Turbolasers ( 5 points)
= 150 total ship cost

1 Biggs Darklighter ( 19 points)
2 X-Wing Squadrons ( 26 points)
1 Jan Ors ( 19 points)

Looking good. Possibly drop nav team or Waylex for a bit of an initiative bid. I play the full 400 usually but as a beginner I did like going first and a 4-5 point bid should get you the choice 2/3rds of the time.

Thanks alot guys, much appreciated. Love the Walex:Admonition combo. Dopn't mind playing second.

After thinking about what you've both written and my style of play here's list deux.

My only anxiety is running a reduced fighter screen. I've used the remaining 3 points to buy Bright Hope (survivability) and Skills First Officer (flexibility).

With only 1 X-Wing to support Biggs you might consider switching him to Wedge or the X-Wing to a YT-1300. The 1300 is slower and less punchy but has more hull for Biggs to shed damage to.

That's grreat, thanks chaps. Will ammend my list accordingly and post the outcome a week on Sunday!

Good luck to you. Interested in hearing how you do.

Going off of your second list here because that is what you've revised it to.

First up, Commander. I know you've started with Dodonna, and that's great. Have you had a chance to search the forum for any of Aresius' builds? That's because to my mind, that's how you play a Liberty with Dodonna. I play a Liberty with Madine, and I think both Garm/Leia are possible. Which commander you are playing reflects what other units you need to bring. For example Aresius has a lot of squads to cover the Liberty's weaknesses and it is his only heavy hitter. I run a very light squadron screen, but I have a decked out Admonition and can use Madine repositioning to get a lot of defensive effect. Dodonna's weakness is you don't get the repositioning that you do out of Madine, and thus someone like Aresius makes up for that with a ton of activations. Dodonna is fine, but you'll have to think through what you want the rest of the list to do.

Second, the Liberty load-out itself. The Nav team is great and all, but you don't have a lot of token generation in your list. Now, if you've got a few comms netting flotillas, you can really set it up well. That's why people often go with Engine techs instead, since you can trigger it off the nav command and then use your current speed+ET combo to set up some very different positions. I think the load-out is wrong. XX-9 is fine, but there are subtle differences between the Star and Battle cruiser. On the Battle, you definitely want leading shots. Spinal is a good go-to there as well to maximize your down range dice, and then give you a bigger red pool to reroll with LS. The Star Cruiser has more blue dice than red, so adding a red with Spinal gets you less benefit, and LS is working with a small pool of dice. Oddly enough, SW-7 works tons better on the Star Cruiser and with the Mon Karren title, because you get a fixed amount of damage. Then you want DTT to fix one bad red dice. The overall red pool is not large enough to justify leading shots. You're going to get more consistent damage for cheaper with SW-7+DTT (10 pts) than LS+Spinal (13 points). Might as well save the points for elsewhere in your fleet.

Third, MC30s. APT works really well with Dodonna, but I can't help but think you'd be better off with just one. Maybe if you fly them really well and can box something in with the Liberty+2 MC30s the way Ardaedhel flies, maybe. I'd still rather take one and free up the other points for building another activation into your list. I've seen some people look at Walex and Admonition and think that they naturally pair, but in my experience, this is just wasted points. You're usually getting away because you could zoom out at speed-4, in which case Walex just doesn't end up helping. I think Walex on Admonition is more of a newbie crutch until someone learns to fly Admonition better.

4th: Bright Hope/Toryn: Good. Just be sure you've got enough squadrons and rolls to make the rerolls worth it. I use A-wings, where Toryn boosts both counter and main attacks. I'm not necessarily convinced in your list that you'll get your money here.

Squadrons: The best light screen is still A-wings. You're paying a lot of points for Jan, and her braces will certainly extend your life, but only so far. When you run out of other squads, she's expensive. I try to bring here after I get to 70 or more points and at least six stands. The way this game shapes up is that people either run very light squadron screens and look to point-deny in the squadron game, or they run pretty sizeable squadron forces and look to go all-in on winning the squadron game. So 4 stands with 2 aces is usually easy points for them, and then you're back to playing as if you were squadronless, minus whatever you managed to kill, which may not be a whole lot.

I hope that helps and good luck with your new game!

Thanks once again. On reflection and in light of the feedback addressing some of my reservations I've revised the list accordingly ;)

Agreeing with Vergillus, I've dropped one of the APTs. I liked the Admonition and Walex combo but have to acknowledge that I'm likely to be able to fly out of trouble. The relative difference between Red / Blue dice on the Battle / Star Cruisers is useful and, as I'm after predictability rather than range, I've ditched Spinal Armament to free up some more points. I've also abandoned the idea of a dual fighter / bomber screen and gone for a smaller sharper alternative. This has freed up points for another activation with a flotilla and Leia to give me some responsiveness.

Here's the revised list:

Faction: Rebel Alliance

Points: 400/400

Commander: General Dodonna

Assault Objective: Most Wanted

Defense Objective: Planetary Ion Cannon

Navigation Objective: Solar Corona

[ flagship ] MC80 Star Cruiser (96 points)

- General Dodonna (20 pts)

- Nav Team (4 pts)

- Skilled First Officer (1 pt)

- SW-7 Ion Batteries (5 pts)

- XX-9 Turbolasers (5 pts)

- Mon Karren (8 pts)

= 151 pts

MC30c Torepedo Frigate (63 pts)

- Ordance Experts (4 pts)

- Lando Calrissian (4 pts)

= 71 pts

MC30c Torepedo Frigate (63 pts)

- Ordance Experts (4 pts)

- Assault Proton Torpedoes (5 pts)

- Admonition (8 pts)

= 80 pts

GR-75 Medium Transports (18 pts)

- Toryn Farr (7 pts)

- Bright Hope

= 27 pts

GR-75 Medium Transports (18 pts)

- Leia Organa (3 pts)

= 21 pts

1 Shara Bey (17 pts)

3 A-wing Squadrons (33 pts)

= 50

In my opinion that's the best rebel fighter screen you can get for 50pts.

Thanks, that's reassuring :D
